Erwin von Witzleben it is [:)]

I remember being very saddened by the opening paragraph on von Witzleben in Mitchum's "Hitler's Field Marshals".

".......Had he seen the light of day a century earlier, he would have been a worthy colleague of Gerhard Scharnhorst, August von Gneisenau, and Count Johann Yorck von Wartenburg, the officers who freed Prussia from Napoleon. Born when he was, he was born to be hanged." [:(]

von Reichenau was a good guess though. I don't think he made Field Marshall before he died of a heart attack though, and there was no question of his politics nor did he command an Army to start the war. But some interesting what-ifs hangs over his career I think.

I beg to disagree. von Reichenau commanded the 10th Army at the time of the start of the war. He was also promoted to Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal) before his death. And since he joined the Nazi party it is not completely unreasonable to think that some of his peers considered him a traitor to the officer corps.

ahh, thanks Orm, it has been some time since I read a short version of his bio, so I just read the even shorter one on Wiki. and who commanded the Armies during the invasion of Poland always escapes me and I am more familiar with a few of the corps commanders in that one, the ones who rose to Army/Army Group level later in the war.

von Reichenau's death makes for some interesting what-if's on the outcome of Operation Barbarossa. something I read years back indicated that his loyalty to the Nazis gave him Hitler's ear a bit better than other regular Army generals, I hope I am still thinking of the correct FeldMarschall.

the point about a German general being a traitor to some but not others is a terrible one for a quiz like this. you could make that point about every German general, as loyal Nazis being traitors to basic human morality, and vice versa on any that participated or didn't participate in anti-Hitler plots. the Wiki article on von Reichenau has this to say about his death and the resultant clouds around this officer:

In January 1942 von Reichenau suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, and it was decided to fly him from Poltava to a hospital in Leipzig, Germany. He is often said to have been killed in a plane crash in Russia, though Görlitz writes that the plane merely made an emergency landing in a field, and that von Reichenau actually died of a heart attack. His death coincided in time with a propaganda action conducted by the Polish underground (Operation Reichenau), whose goal was to discredit Reichenau, in the eyes of the German leadership, as a person who allegedly had been plotting to overthrow the Nazi régime, to sow distrust between the Nazi political leadership and its military command, and punish one of the German generals responsible for war crimes in Poland. This coincidence became a fertile ground for conspiracy theories, which allege that Reichenau might actually have been killed by the Nazi secret services.

I sometimes wish WiF had a leadership system akin to the one in the old Victory Games' "Civil War" where Stonewall Jackson gets-r-done, many of the others just kind of sit there too long, and you hope Bragg rolls 2 6s on an attack and bites it, or however that worked. So it would take a lot of your command points to get Monty moving...

What conspiracy...a 9mm to the head would be a definite cause of a cerebral haemorrhage and could definitely cause a heart to stop working. [;)]
