This turn opened with an errant E TF getting involved with the PTs again. No bombardments this turn, but I hope this makes him think some were planned. [:)]

On their way back they ran over the Sabalo, likely sinking it after multiple direct hits.

Then things got interesting. Corsairs opened up over Gunzan, getting some of our LR CAP cleared away.

Then a rare shot of Japanese bombers over the Allied troops! Just a hundred or so on the day, hopefully enough to keep some disruption on them.

Then the bombers arrived. Our CAP blew throughout the P-38s, downing around 60 on the day! Couldn't get to many of the bombers before they dropped though. Our LR CAP wasn't as effective as usual, and the middle altitude bands barely showed up, likely due to poor detection times. There are about 3-4 radars in the base though, so hopefully this will improve.

On the day 500-600 bombers made a visit, but the troops are largely unaffected and doing as well as can be expected after the major battle yesterday.

The Allies probably kept most of their pilots this time, as did we. The Ki-83 were not as effective in getting numbers there as usual in spite of being 3 hexes away and being set to 80% with 20% rest.

Well I have observed that the Air Replacement mechanism totally breaks down if the Command HQ of the airbase(s) in question is not sat somewhere un-disturbed with 20,000 Supply. I suspect that ground replacements might be similarly effected.

All of this may be moot given your situation.

Of course my real motivation for asking is OCD. I would be incapable of putting a Command HQ anywhere near the front-line, just as I am mostly incapable of having two Army HQs in one hex.

Ha! Well, I've had maybe about 4-5 Army HQs in one hex. A hex is a pretty big place, if you consider the greater London area with 12 million people is in quite a lot less space than one hex. So those HQs could be well out of range of the arty and still be close enough for good communication.

In this case this only became the front line two turns ago. It might make sense to pull that back now, but I also don't want it to get crushed in transit to Keijo. It hasn't had the desired effect of getting supply to the base anyway, so there is no real reason to have it there anymore.

Also, no base in Korea is anywhere close to 20k anyway! [;)]

Any other ideas?

Have you sucked all your merchant ship's bunkers dry? It may be a way for you to use fuel for your remaining warships and letting the fuel in your port hexes be used for HI instead.

It would be nice if there was an 'unfuel' command as I'm sure it parallels what was done in extremis.

Agreed - sounds like a good request for the beta patch thread.

I've got all TFs on 'do not refuel' and do try this. Sometimes for odd reasons they don't take fuel from the other ships. Not sure why. But yes, that is the goal. I'm running very few ships around these days anyway, and they don't have far to go, for sure.

Yes! That would be amazing. Not sure if it's possible. I might make a note though. It would be a LOT of fuel. Although I tried for at least a year to limit merchie refueling, I still have hundreds of full bunkers sitting in ports. I'd have to make that thread a no Jocke zone, as I don't really want him getting any ideas about bombing ports to destroy fuel on ships. I'm still quivering a bit about the 4 CVs in port that still have 20-30 days repairing. Maybe he thinking they're beyond hope? Hope so! [:D]

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KOREA: On the day not too bad, again getting a slight positive air result, and not suffering from the 4E bombing much. There will be days though, where I'm sure it gets bad. I can't LR CAP forever. I'll keep it up one more day, then back to the HI.

STRAT BOMBING: On looking at things the Dinah KAI factory is about half shot now, another Sam factory was also partially destroyed, and NF just can't cover everything. So for those still playing the Japanese side late, the goal is to keep the B-29s away, period. The Hive is what it's all about. Although even Manila and the PI offer close enough bases, so it's almost impossible to do this.

HOME ISLANDS: Both Tokyo and Osaka have about 10-12 days of fuel for the HI now. Most of this will be used to update air groups, I'm sure. As shown in the last update above, the supply just keeps going down. The only viable strikes soon will be kamia and DB, as I can't use torps in most bases now, even though they are in the HQs ready to go.

So the plan is to convert all 2E groups to low naval bombing. I've already switched out pilots. I'll try to run them on strikes at lower altitudes, and hope for some 'for the emperor' dives into ships. I have about 500-600 still in the pools, mostly Peggys, but also some other types.

I did a bit of a count, and there are around 1200 2E bombers still. about 1700 1E LB, but most are training groups. Those I'm going to start phasing out once the pilots are trained. They are less useful. I'll keep the big groups of 27-30 planes, but I don't really have a viable pool of kami planes other than the silly canvas and wire variety trainers that fill out these groups. Something else to think about if you're in the early to middle game. Getting 1E planes ready en masse to use in these groups. If I was doing it again I'd pump up the Myoko, the Toko and Tsurugi, and even build a few more Anns and Mary in the beginning just to have them.

One of the other things I have to start doing is getting ALL of the HI troops into potential invasion areas. I've cleared Hokkaido and the Kuriles to send all of the defenders there to Korea. Depending on events at Gunzan, I might bring some back!

Also, there are concentrations in a lot of the big middle of island bases I should move to the beaches in the West especially.

17 June 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KOREA: Well, all the fun in the air just came to an end. About 300-400 P-47N swept Gunzan. Looks like back to the olden days of 8:1 with this plane en masse against even our best planes and pilots. Not complaining though. It's a great plane, and his pilots are likely the best in game in those beasts. We lost around 160 fighters to a reported 24 P-47N shot down. Yikes!

This will likely mean a big push by 4E next turn. I'd like to have one more day of respite, for reasons soon to be revealed. Not sure we'll get it though. Hoping for rain!

Troops are back to around 6500AV and still on the way up at Gunzan. If we can stuff another attack it might start to spiral backwards on the Allies. Or they'll just bring more. Without stacking limits he can break through, it's just a matter of if he wants to add another 5-10 divisions. I really wish we'd adopted SL way back in 42 when I proposed it, but Jocke didn't want to as it would 'limit' his offensive in places like Burma. That is probably true, as he then massed 10k AV in a big stack and forced us to respond in kind to slow it down, then finally landed behind. This happened time and again in every major area, including the Marianas, (5k AV landings on Saipan and Tinian), in Cotabato, in Manila, and in th ultimate stack in China, with 18kAV and a million men FAILING ([:D]) at Kweiyang against 2kAV IJA until the Brits moved up to force the issue.

Stacking limits would have changed it all, and limited these mega-stacks, the only counter to which is another big stack behind forts in good terrain in defense. Too bad. But it's been a fun game nonetheless, and if I'd been able to thwart him a few more times in places, he might have quit and we likely wouldn't have gotten this far anyway, so at the price of plausibility, we at least got here.

STRAT BOMBING: More night bombing, and the B-29 are being used more and more frequently. Toyama's Ki-83 factory gets nailed and destroyed. Also Oita has some LI hit, but at least here a bunch of the B-29-1 still flying are taken down by NF.

HOME ISLANDS:

CHINA: Wow. The defeat for the Allies near Psingiang knocked them back to around 1300AV! They did send in the waves of 2E today to thwart our chances of a DA in return. If we had full supply and if there was some possibility of a CAP here I would probably break out. Now, with low supply and 600 Allied 2Es on the loose, that isn't really a good option. I'll keep this going for as long as possible.

The Allied tanks take Nanchang and move forward toward the Hangchow area. Our troops are trying to get into good territory in front of them, but the tanks are moving fast. I've got about 3k AV spread around here to slow things down. I'll try to block from the front and move in behind. I want to constrict mobility of the tanks until the bigger slow armies have to move up to break things open. The massive Chinese army is now moving and is nearing Henyang.

RE: Wild Sheep Chase

Post by obvert »

No rest for the weary. The P-47Ds have a shot at Kagoshima CAP, but luckily I beefed this up again before the turn, rotating in fresh units. Interesting he keeps coming here, always sweeping, never bombing, in spite of suffering poor results for a few weeks now. Same today, as the D version seems to have lost it's shine a bit. We get better than 1:1 again. Tomorrow a surprise here if the P-47N shows up in the hundreds.
