The Clash are 1970s UK punk not 1980s. They saved American rock and roll listeners from endless hours of boredom at the hands of Steve Miller, the Eagles, and the J.Geils Band.

I'm really shocked you don't know the Kinks, Demosthenes. They were right up front there with the Stones, the Who, and Herman's Hermits.

And yeah, The Who are on my greats list too. And the Beatles too but of course that never needs mentioning. The All Pervasive Presence of Paul McCartney Is Manifest By The Absence Of Any Need To Mention His Name.

Well, My younger brother had some 'clash' and 'sex pistols' records back then,so I at least had heard of them.
I never went to a Stones or Who concert so I don't know who was playing warm up for them (I did hear of the J. Giels Band)

But who I listened to a lot of was Credence, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Janice Joplin, (Beatles of course)..so my experience and taste in music is a bit before punk, disco. and 70s rock

I did like Three Dog Night, and the Guess Who..

It sounds like we're about the same age. I only brought up the Clash as a counterpoint to the bands I consider he vilest offenders for churning out vile hits of the 70s. (Anyone remember Minnie Ripperton? Or Donovan's "Atlantis" ? Yecchh.)

Maybe I just had some broader exposure because of my college DJ career.

Saccharine sweet voice with a double alto note in the middle. A genuine one hit wonder called "Loving You." Definitely worse than "Angie Baby" (Helen Reddie) or "MacArthur Park" or "One Tin Soldier" and almost as bad as "Having My Baby."

Oh the foul, foul, Lovecraftian Horror of it.

The memories would kill me were it not that I bust out laughing to the edge of tears every time I consider that people actually listened to that stuff and thought it good.

Procol Harum very fine group. I saw the Clash when they opened for the Who in 82 or 83 in Buffalo. J. Giels played my High School right before they became big.

Music to Torture Your Neighbor's Cat

Post by mdiehl »

Read it and weep. Just imagine a 'saccharine 70s love ballad' melody. Like "Afternoon Delight" only with marshmallow fluff instead of a guitar riff.

[:D]

[quote]Lovin' You
Minnie Riperton

Lovin' you is easy 'cause you're beautiful
Makin' love with you is all I want to do
Lovin' you is more than just a dream come true
Everything that I do is out of lovin' you

No one else can make me feel the colors that you bring
Stay with me while we grow old
And we will live each day in springtime

Lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day of my life is filled with lovin' you
Lovin' you I see your soul come shining through

Everyone knows that IJN has realistic and hard trinings in their program. Many Japanese sailors die in peacetime because of this training. When 1st air fleet left Japan to attack PH man and pilots in this fleet was most experinced in the world, far superior to US. Later that change.

This is true to this day. Japan always trains at night and in weather so rough no other navy ever considers it - and pays a price in peacetime in lives lost - which they believe gives them an operational advantage in war. It certainly was true in WWII. But this is something you only see in professional discussions - and some who want to regard Japan as always inferior in everything will not like to hear you say this.

El Cid This Bud's 4 U

Post by mdiehl »

Here you go Cid.
Angie Baby
Helen Reddy

You live your life in the songs you hear
on the rock and roll radio.
And when a young girl doesn't have any friends
that's a really nice place to go.
Folks hoping you'd turn out cool
but they had to take you outta school.
You're a little touched you know, Angie Baby.

Lovers appear in your room each night
and they whirl you across the floor.
But they always seem to fade away
when your daddy taps on your door.
Angie girl, are you all right?
Tell the radio good-night.
All alone once more, Angie Baby.

Angie Baby, you're a special lady.
Living in a world of make-believe.
Well, maybe.

Stopping at her house is a neighbor boy
with evil on his mind.
'Cause he's been peeking in Angie's room
at night through the window blind.
I see your folks have gone away.
Would you dance with me today?
I'll show you how to have a good time, Angie Baby.

When he walks in the room, he feels confused
like he's walked into a play.
And the music's so loud it spins him around
'til his soul has lost it's way.
And as she turns the volume down
he's getting smaller with the sound.
It seems to pull him off the ground.
Toward the radio he's bound never to be found.

The headlines read that a boy disappeared
and everyone thinks he died.
'Cept a crazy girl with a secret lover who
keeps her satisfied.
It's so nice to be insane.
No one asks you to explain.
Radio by your side, Angie Baby.

Angie Baby, you're a special lady
living in a world of make-believe.
Well, maybe. Well, maybe.
Show me a fellow who rejects statistical analysis a priori and I'll show you a fellow who has no knowledge of statistics.

Skyros - The Weight

Post by Big B »

ORIGINAL: Skyros

Lots of great music from that period, I also like CSNY, Pink Floyd and the Band...

Hey Skyros- speaking of 'The Band' - this is just for you! (now we're talkin Harleys and ridin'. I'm back in my element)...

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me - where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.

(Chorus:)
Take a load off Fanny,
take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny,
And (and) (and) you can put the load right on
me.

I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."

(Chorus)
Take a load off Fanny,
take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny,
And (and) (and) you can put the load right on
me.

Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee
company?"

(Chorus)
Take a load off Fanny,
take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny,
And (and) (and) you can put the load right on
me.

Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rags, if you'll take* Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when* you can."

(Chorus)
Take a load off Fanny,
take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny,
And (and) (and) you can put the load right on
me.

Catch a Cannonball, now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe that it's time.
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.

(Chorus)
Take a load off Fanny,
take a load for free;
Take a load off Fanny,
And (and) (and) you can put the load right on
me.

" Favorite tune - Whiter Shade of Pale "

The most overplayed song by a great band. My favourites of theirs were (in no particular order, it depends upon my mood); Conquistador, A Salty Dog, Grand Hotel and A Souvenir of London. Conquistador still gets the occaisional airplay, but the others are never heard.

I'm testing that theory right now - it's Friday Night Flashback on KMTT and I just sent a request for anything by Procol Harum that insn't "A Whiter Shade of Pale" ...
fair winds,
Brad
