...He'll get a lot and drop some of mine, (more critical probably) if he takes Chungking and Chengtu. I'm playing to defend those at all costs, but the supply situation is making it tough.

The one thing that will help is if he continues to play with his daylight bombing and give me ether occasional 300-400 point haul of 4E and fighter VPs. He still hasn't really touched Tokyo, other than with atomics, so maybe that could yield some VPs too.

Whilst the total loss of the China bases will impact negatively on the denominator, I do think you are over emphasising the impact. I still maintain that come the final turn your denominator is unlikely to decrease much, and probably will increase from what it currently is. Consider these calculations.

1. Your last VP screenshot is post #3456 as at 7 Nov 1945. Then you had 204 bases which provided 9704 base points.

2. Lose all the base points brings the then denominator down to approx. 79k. But this is never going to happen as the overwhelming number of Japanese controlled bases, which provide the bulk of the non Chinese base points, are on the Home Islands.

3. The worst case scenario of losing all your Chinese bases is a loss of approx. 8k in base points. This is if they have all been fully built up and all are at full supply, which I suspect is not the case, and that the Allies spend the time to capture all of them, including the ones way up north like Urumchi etc. Troops mopping up China are not available for the more dangerous operations involved in invading the Home Islands.

4. The more realistic estimate is that by late Feb/early March, you will have lost Chungking, Chengtu, Kunming, Tsuyung, Lanchow and Sining. If they have been fully built up (and were fully supplies on 7 Nov), the denominator will be reduced by 7.8k. Now that represents about a daily loss of approx. 80 VPs. You are averaging a daily gain which is significantly greater than this.

5. The last 4 screenshots of aircraft losses are shown on posts #3459, 3462, 3467 and 2468 for Nov 9, 10, 15 and 17 respectively. Those four days alone show 372 downed Allied aircraft, of which aprox. 138 were 4E Beasties. Thus your average daily aircraft points gain is about 127 VPs. Which all go directly to the denominator. So even if my time estimate in 4 above is very wrong and you lose all those Chinese cities by 1 Jan 1946, aircraft points will at least equal lost base points. And after you have lost the Chinese bases you will still accrue aircraft points and where will the Allies further reduce your base points? Only from Korea and Japan proper, not an easy task not to mention the army points loss involved.

6. It is the denominator, not the numerator, which is critical. Increasing the numerator requires the Allies destroying much more of your devices. Here the Japanese benefit from having better multipliers. Allied non Soviet/Chinese devices are twice as expensive than Japanese devices. IOW if the Japanese lose 12 device but destroy 3 non-Soviet/Chinese devices, Japan still comes out ahead because the Allies gain only a 2:1 VP benefit when the Allies need to gain, on average, better than a 2:1 ratio to get the overall score to the auto victory threshold (which we already knows only earns at best an Allied Marginal Victory).

7. The fact is that the Allies need to gain

the Chinese bases
the Korean bases
continue the strategic bombing of Japan

to have any hope of reaching the auto victory threshold. In all three instances significant opportunities to at leat cover the decrease of the denominator, and in fact even slightly increase the denominator, present themselves. Come 1 Jan 1946, the Japanese denominator will still hover around the 88k mark. How much do you think the numerator will be? My guestimate is that it will have moved from appro 131.5k on 7 Nov to approx. 142k, a monthly average gain of approx. 6k.

8. Extrapolating from 7 above, one can envisage Japan having a denominator around 90k come the end of May 1946. The numerator by then might be only around 175k. That results in a Draw (as per post 3476).

Thanks Alfred.

I've tried to keep getting anything I can to increase the denominator. I've also reduced the options for him getting easy points in the numerator by sequestering my remaining ships in TFs in the inland sea and at Tokyo. I've had some surface combat units at Nagasaki for months with no reaction from the Allies, but I think it might be time to get them back as well.

Yamato is repairing at Hiroshima and hasn't yet been a target for any bombing raids there. Very few other ships are in port, so strikes would have to be naval, thus more susceptible to CAP reduction and lack of coordination. There are a lot of shipping VPs stilll afloat though, so I wonder how long it'll be until he tries to target them.

He's gaining fast as some more troops are destroyed at Shanghai, and will have more opportunities to get others in China. He's gotten the far NW bases down to Sining and Lanchow, but hasn't broken through those yet.

It'll be an interesting ending.

On the 18th big strikes against Nagasaki during the day. It gets messy, and the CAP does do some damage, but strikes do get through and hit hard.

Overall The Allies again lose some big numbers of planes, with around 75-80 4Es among the casualties. Damage to the base is extensive and still burning. This is though what. Hope for, which is some significant points gained for the losses.

Night strikes also hit other more minor bases, incurring losses to flak and NF as well.

A few quieter turns on the 19th and 20th. I managed to hit Cam Ran Bay with some Frances, but they couldn't really do much effective damage. Likely no sinking there. Also got CL Naka into the Sulu Sea before it was detected and attacked by some Barracudas. The small Oscar CAP at Tarakan helped out, but one bomb got through. Naha will look for opportunities with light damage.

On the 21st another massive daylight strike hits Nagoya. Again big Allied losses, over 200 planes total with about 140 4E shot down. So that's good. [:)]

I'm hiding away most of the remaining ships in the hope I can get equal airframe points for them if he does ever try a naval strike into the Home Islands.

One thing I've contemplated in my Allied games (keep this on the down low, although I've already ruled it out in my other games, I'm pretty sure) is some method of getting into the inland sea. I think the weak point of the fortress system is Yura. It only has 8 x 15cm CD and 2 x 14cm CD guns. Since it's in the non-base hex and has no forts it might be possible to dismantle some of these by a large 4E strike followed by a concentrated BB infiltration.

This would only get the Allies to Kobe, which has a much better fort with 2 x 25cm CD guns as well as a bunch of other cruiser sized and smaller guns, and will likely be fortified plus having x4 defensive terrain. Still, a bombardment of Kobe and destruction of anything sitting there would be a good point haul, plus it might be an interesting and less defended invasion point. I for one don't have larger forces there as I've concentrated o keeping the likely clear hex landing spots defended, and the inland sea seems like the last place the Allies would try. I do have a bunch of units sitting in Strat mode ready to go though, and many would make it there within a turn, so it would be a very risky move.

Oita is possible too, but has more guns, plus forts, and probably mines. It would allow a deeper penetration, but Hiroshima has a very large contingent of 12.7 DP guns. For invasions though a few of the other nearby bases to the West would be ideal.

The Allies mostly concentrate on milk-runs in China and ground action reducing Hangchow and Kukong these days. There is a limited Strat bombing strike at Hakodate that gets fires over 300k and still doesn't burn out all of the industry there. Odd. I have no defences on this base, and have limited NF in the area which didn't react. I'm prioritising the bigger targets now.

A shown below, supply drops for the first time below 1 million. Things are getting lean. Plenty of fuel and HI though! [:D]

Hiroshima is a target on the 24th. I love when Allied players forget about balloons and set B-29s to 6k! [;)] Thanks.

This is an example of why I don't like to set daylight planes to night CAP. It probably helped with deterring and damaging bombers, but the losses for Ki-102b FB are extreme compared to virtually the same model plane in the Randy Ki-102c NF, and each have similar pilots. There are more Randy b but still, it's not productive for the defense.

Hangchow falls on the 24th. It's tough to lose all of these troop points, but I see no way to avoid it. The supply cost of moving and then feeding them outweigh the VP hit of losing them at this point, even if I could air transport some out.

On the 25th nothing of note happens, and even some of the millruns in China take the day off.

On the 26th Kukong falls and Chikhiang is shocked over the river. Due to supply issues the big negative the Allies achieve isn't as damaging as I'd like. Such is late 45.

Maebashi takes a bit hit from the beasts. A lot of front line fighter factories wiped out, but I do have good pools and still have more producing elsewhere for now. At Matsuyama the Allies again head in for the balloons at 6k and a lot of 4Es go down to ops and too flak.

The Allied armies are still stuck at the crossing point NW of Sian near Tienshui. Supply is nearly gone but this DA is repelled for larger Allied losses.

At Kweilin I've decided to send troops in by air to stop the single armoured unit there and force a larger army to move in if he wants it. I don't like the idea of this area be swarmed yet.

At Chanteh an Indian ID crosses and is stopped by a solid IJA force defending the river.

A good day in the air. Maebashi is a bit beaten up, but it's much harder to destroy factories with direct tartgeting rather than manpower strikes.

There is a chance that I might get this plane, the Ki-94, by the end of December of the factories aren't knocked out before then. I have never used it so it would be great to give it a try. The issue is that I'll be fighting F-80s by then too!

Nagano, Nagasaki, Akita and Sendai are all on the target list for night strikes on the 29th. Still some B-17G set to 6k which really helps the defense.

Over Manila the Ki-83 find more CAP and have their way again. This is gaining me valuable points. The IJN has worse luck as the CL Sendai witch was supposed to flank in last turn didn't make the whole journey and was probably sighted, giving time for the Allies to hide the precious fat transports away in the port. Only got one LST.

Dan is so careful, so diligent in only moving as a giant pack of hundred of ships covered by the full DS, that it's been next to impossible to find targets at this stage. It slows his pace incredibly, so there is a downside to that tactic for the Allies. I'll keep looking though. he has to be vulnerable somewhere. He still has left a lot of bases in his rear LOC which have good supply and decent airfields.

Kweilin holds in a minor victory for the IJA. The Allies shock and fail miserably to take the base after the tanks are bombed and more of the 2nd ID flies in. [;)]

At Chikhiang the Allies also fail to get a positive and suffer a bit, and near Tienshui a tank only assault backfires. A few positive VPs ta balance heavy losses elsewhere.

December. Never thought I'd play to this point in an AE game. If I can make 46 with some fighting ability I'll be over the moon.

Things get worse every day somewhere. Troops being gradually culled by Soviet airstrikes near Peiping. Supply dwindling along the length of the Korean defensive lines. Troops gradually crumbling after months of holding a defensive position in the mountains North of Sian. A huge army now besieging and breaking down the defences at the key holding point of Chikhiang.

it's been a while since I've played allies in China in 42, but this is worse, from what I remember. The air strikes are many hundreds of modern 2Es and hundreds more 4Es. The ground troops are T-34 and 44 USA/MC infantry, Pershings, 155mm Long Toms and Soviet rockets brigades. With some supply there would be holding places still, but even with industry mostly intact (due to the HR in China Torsten asked for in the beginning) the output and availability is reducing daily.

On the 1st the Allies scrapped some more VPs from the CAP at Manila. Every little bit counts.

On the 2nd the Allies strike at Toyama, massively. The whole shebang. They pretty much wipe out the industry but do lose some planes to flak, although seem to have figured out not to set them below 7k now to avoid the balloons. They also send three groups of 2E from China to Nagasaki where they are completely wiped out by the CAP. I'm assuming this is a mistake setting. Often when bombing ground troops if something moves some planes will reset to no target.

So, the good news is that there is still supply in the major centres on Honshu, although Kyushu is getting low now. Still, I can fill in CAP groups with new airframes, which is my only really effective tactic now to gain points. [;)]

When did the Allies exceed the Japanese 'Aircraft Points Lost' threshhold? It seems to me relatively recently? Since then you've built a 2500 point buffer in that category. Hopefully, ongoing Allied air points lost will make it impossible for the Allies to get another (unanswered) 39k VPs surplus within the next month.

I think the Allied air loss points exceeded the Japanese air loss points in early October. (On one info screen I found the difference was something like 500 VPs on Sept 22 in favour of the Allies).

The main uptick in Allied VPs recently was from the Bomb dropped on Tokyo. I think that was something like 28k. I'd have to look back. Strat bombing has been another big contributor, and the LCU loss VPs.

He's dropped two bombs, so as Alfred mentioned, if he drops another the Allies can only achieve a draw.

Niigata, Iwaki and Toyama are targeted on the 3rd. Sometimes thunderstorms are the best defence.

No bombing on the 4th, but lots against the troops in China. It's whittling them away so that even in good defensive positions, there isn't much hope to take a decent chunk off of the Allied masses. the IJA defenders did manage to take out some tanks in an armour only attack near Tiensui.

Still getting some decent Allied air points even on quieter turns. Supply is holding around 900k+ for now. Fingers crossed. (At least the scarcity of resources is not as much of the problem when half of the LI has been bombed out). [;)]

It's now been exactly four years of this campaign. Seven plus in real time.

Not much on the 5th, but big strikes at Yokohama commence on the 6th . The fires don't get much over 50k in the night, but there are residual fires still burning each day and that will mean continued damage. The flak does well, both in limiting the strikes and hitting planes. The NF are getting worn down though, and most are bleeding from Tokyo, so it's weakening that base as well, not that he'll ever decide to strike it! [;)]

North of Sian the Allies get a 1:1 and I think it's all over, but then they only manage a 1:2 the next day, so maybe it'll still hold for a bit.

Chikhiang falls dramatically. Lots of Allied troops here.

Most of the action is still ground bombing in China, so not too exciting to report.

More Yokohama strikes. More burning. Fires this time get up over 100k in the night phase. A lot of flak losses for the allies, but the base is suffering.

Near Tienshui in the NW the IJA holds again, and both sides are being slowly ground down. Kweilin falls in the South and Liuchow will be reinforced. There is now a partial retreat happening along holding points between Indochina, Burma and China. I need some of those IDs back now and so I'll let a few of the Chinese hordes begin to move. It's time to pull back to a tighter, more dense formation to attempt a defense of Chungking and the central plains.
