Red Storm rising.. Aztez (J) vs Ctangus (A) CHS 155

RE: Yet another bad day at the office!
Aztez,
I think you are very wrong with respect to the results of the sweeps. If you just crunch the numbers you can see that you lost 20 front-line fighters with trained pilots in return for 91 planes. That's a 4.5 to 1 exchange rate which is several hundred percent better than what you WERE achieving.
As to the rest: BBs vs Vladivostok without checking what Soviet planes might be facing you ???? [8|] [8|] [8|] [8|] Well, if you don't research what you might be facing ( and by research I mean checking ALL of the important statistics, namely, speed, range and ceiling + weaponry ) then you simply got what you deserved. Take it as a lesson never to be so careless again AND consider what I told you about the cost of the Musashi. See how quickly you lost her sister ship in one ill-considered strike? Wouldn't you much rather have the 925+ front-line fighters not building Musashi has cost you? Consider it a lesson.
Also, AGAIN I feel the need to stress that you MUST simply stop fighting these peripheral perimeter actions. You can't win them, you are just going to lose ships, planes and men and won't slow the enemy down. The perimeter I outlined for you IS defensible IF you commit to it now and assault the Amboina complex quickly and hard (The longer you wait the more ctangus will reinforce it ) and make shipping reinforcements ( along the lines I described in my post ) to those posts a major priority.
So, four basic points:
1.Compared to 3 months ago when the Allies were shooting your planes down over the Soviet Union at a better than 1:1 exchange rate in THEIR favour you now have a 4.5 : 1 exchange rate in YOUR favour. By my calculation that's a FIVE-FOLD IMPROVEMENT, and you're disappointed? Weird!!!!
2. COMMIT to the defensive line I outlined and begin really shipping forces to it. This should be your absolute highest priority. Stop reinforcing defeat and begin building the infrastructure of success several hundred miles north of Lae and your current failures. Be ruthless and let the guys at these bases die ( except for cadres evacuated by sub and air ) and BUILD, BUILD, BUILD fortresses in all of the bases I mentioned in my previous post.
3. Punch out Amboina, don't dick around with subsidiary bases to its north. If you'd just steamed for Amboina initially you'd have taken the same losses but gotten these northern bases for free a fortnight later. Now you have paid full price for the northern bases AND are going to have to pay full price for Amboina. You just doubled your shipping losses to aerial attack right there.
4. Don't waste ships and planes on minor little offensive punches. You WILL lose your entire navy at some stage but that should be at a time and place of your choosing AND in the service of some great strategic goal. A navy is a strategic asset, if you are losing it then you must lose it in order to fulfill a great purpose. Look at my AAR and look at what I've said about how I plan to expend my navy in it. Will I lose a large % of the ships committed to action? Yes. Will their loss enable the gaining of a major strategic objective? Yes. Is that a fair trade? Yes, it is the purpose of any arm of service to be utilised in the pursuit of strategic and national policy objectives. Without their fighters the Soviet bombers are just training targets for your fighters, in trying to take them out now you've lost half of your BBs. So, in future, just sit your ships in port, have them repair up to 0% damage and then when it comes time for the Midway operation OR a decisive operation to attrit a US invasion convoy you will sortie them all and achieve something worth their sacrifice. If that takes 2 more years then so be it. No more minor offensive punches, they will just attrit you to nothingness.
Lastly, I see no plan for Midway. I understand that it is easier to be told x, y and z but I believe true learning comes from seeing how you would do it and how someone else might do it better. The difference between the two enables you to spot the basic underlying flaws in your thinking and eradicate them ( which is the important lesson here.... How you would invade Midway isn't actually important BUT the thinking underlying the plan you come up with IS key as analysing the plan elucidates the thinking and fixing the thinking is what will pay dividends for you for years to come in your wargaming.
Back in the day when I PBEMed Combat Mission and took on "students" I used to PBEM against them and show them how their assumptions and underlying thinking caused them far greater problems than any lack of tactical nous. One time I entered into a discussion with a few of them in which they stated that an attacking force with twice the "points" ( where points were used to purchase tanks, infantry etc ) of a defender could not be readily defeated --- since in CM a 1.5 to 1 ratio of attacker to defender yielded a 50/50 distribution of wins between defender and attacker. I argued that not only could the defender win but the defender could win easily and quickly.
End result they came up with an agreed "best force" and established the limits on forces ( heavy allowed any tanks at all, medium allowed Pz IVs vs Sherman 75s, Light allowed recon vehicles etc ) and decided to pick MEDIUM and play as the Germans ( since they felt I would dominate in both a HEAVY and LIGHT game ). I told them that I would achieve auto-victory in 3 turns --- something which I don't think had ever been done before in CM as a defender. So, end result, we deployed and 2 turns into the game they auto-surrendered after suffering 98% casualties and having their jumping off positions over-run by Allied recon vehicles. I suffered 1% casualties.
What had happened? Well, they deployed in an offensive formation with formations cloistered together along the avenues of advance in order to begin rolling on the first turn. They had mass, momentum and numbers on their side AND were deploying 75mm-armed Pz IV langs vs my short-barreled 75mm infantry support recon vehicles. On the first turn I dumped several salvoes of artillery onto each of their likely forming up points, killing many tank commanders, shredding half-tracks and panicking infantry. I had picked my vehicles for speed and so by the 2nd turn my vehicles had all crested a nice intervening hill and began to add their fire to that of the artillery. The German infantry was still in shock, many of their tanks were in shock from the sudden death of their tank and platoon commanders ( killed by shrapnel ) and when the 6 or 7 lightly-armed and armoured Allied half-tracks began plinking hollow charge and HE rounds off the sides of the few surviving German tanks those crews began abandoning tank.
End result I lost 2 men to machinegun fire but the Germans lost over 500 in 120 seconds.
What defeated my opponents? Was it a lack of tactical skill? No. Was it a lack of skill in shaping the battlefield in terms of pitching medium german tanks vs medium Allied tanks ( a matchup where quality was pretty even so their numbers would be even more decisive than normal ) ? No. What defeated them was that they simply never considered that a combination of an opening artillery barrage to cause shock and mayhem ( so none of their guys would fire back and butcher my almost-unarmoured attackers ) PLUS loads of non-penetrating but damaging HE and HC would rout and kill their entire force.
It should be noted that opening turn artillery barrages were explicitly allowed. They pummelled the woods and reverse slopes they thought I was hiding in while my units were formed up in assault formation right behind the front line ( right where every lesson and "rule" of combat said they should never be ) ready to mob them.
So, they learnt an important lesson as to the fallacy of their underlying thinking that day. I don't actually care how you go about invading Midway but I DO care about what it shows about underlying flaws in your thinking which can be pointed out and discussed and corrected. Seriously though defend the line we discussed, punch out Amboina ASAP ( so long as US CVs aren't around ) and think back on how ecstatic you would have been 3 months ago to shoot down 91 Soviet fighters for just 20 of your own. 3 months ago for 91 you'd have lost over 100 planes and 100 pilots who were at least as good ( and probably a bit better ) than what you have in the air at the moment.
Continue your sweeps, swallow your necessary losses but stop throwing ships, planes and troops away on bases you've already lost ( through lack of supply or lack of troops based there etc ) but which the Allies just haven't taken yet. Don't try to build up what he'll attack in the next 3 months or you will just lose to no gain. Build up what he'll be attacking 3 to 6 months from now.
If you look at the aerial results now vs 3 months ago you'll see my advice then was pretty good. I AM right about this defensive line and I AM right that even though I've pointed out what forces to defend it with and which islands and bases to defend you haven't, yet, over 3 game weeks after I made the post made much of a move toward implementing this defensive plan. That's fine but if you don't implement it and stop him cold at those bases this game is going to finish in mid-43.
I don't want to be overly harsh but being all glowy and "ooh isn't it great" isn't going to create a tough defensive line.

RE: Yet another bad day at the office!
Have you played CC3? As German side, I always picked several stuka-zu-fuss, a lot Pak, 2 squad heavy infantry, and one tiger tank. First use the rocket half track to bombard any possible enemy jump postion, then his weakened panzer assualt formation get wipped out by anti-tank guns. Finally tiger with heavy infantry to mop up those already routed. Rather basic tactic, however it always works on those rookie who thought armor mass-assualt is invincible.
RE: Yet another bad day at the office!
CC3. Yeah, I once wrote a review on that which featured some looking into database errors which almost got the old The Wargamer sued by Atomic Games who held that the data fields didn't mean what they were labelled to mean ( an argument I found less than persuasive ). So, sure I played CC3 but I much prefer grand strategy games like WiTP or WiR. Combat Mission was an exception as it was more visceral and really allowed for the application of the moral factor against the other player, IMO.
I wrote a few AARs for that back in the day which illustrated just how doing the unexpected at a more rapid operational tempo than one's opponents could manage could achieve more decisive results than the conventional application of firepower but sadly it seems most people are more interested in identifying the lower level errors they make than in realising that what separates the great from the good players is their grasp that higher-level competence will mediate for all manner of lower level errors. I think that this focus on what I think is the wrong area ( which is harder to improve and pays less dividends for a given improvement ) is a major reason people don't seem to improve so much from game to game. Concentrate on what your strategic errors were and learn from them and in your next game you will do much, much better.
E.g. Create a war economy and pilot training programme which allows you to mass 1000 trained top-line fighters against 400 enemy fighters and even if you give them tactical orders which are sub-optimal ( setting them to sweep at 6,000 feet when the CAP is at 21,000 feet and the ceiling of your fighters is 33,000 feet ) you are going to win whereas no amount of tactical brilliance is going to routinely triumph if your higher-level grasp is such that you only produce 200 mediocre fighters piloted by raw recruits vs those 400 enemy fighters.
Anyways, there's my thoughts for whatever they are worth. I don't say I'm 100% right but I've never seen refocussing on the grander issues to fail to pay dividends.
P.s. As to a game... Well, right now I'm rather busy with my game vs jagdfluger to help test out my mod. Ideally we're looking to take that to 1945 but, personally, I think it'll all be over bar the shouting by the end of 1943. Perchance afterwards.

You guys know there is still a rather active community for CC3, CC4 and CC5 around with lots of head2head play, clanwars etc.
Haven't checked for a few month but it's a nice crowd and quite able, at least compared to my AI trained skills. [;)]

I promise to do my best! [:D] ,,,just maybe he will hit his "fingers" instead of the nail. Unlikely but possible.
The whole picture will become clearer in few turns. Somewhat unclear what are his intensions at Russia & China. Personally I will start to put up pressure of myself. The inital areas will be Timor and Russia (againts his airforce).

These battles are absolutely must to do things when you consider how easily I was wiped out of Southern Solomons area.
Other NEWS
Japanese troops land and seize Weda in Dutch East Indies. Several AP's were hit during this mission but it was accomplished.
Our aircraft production could be better but actually I'am paying on my earlier mistakes. Nemo did sort this area out and did excellent damage control.
KB is repairing and nearing it battle readiness but still few carriers are in need of big repairs.

Hi Aztez .. Happy new year (belatedly)
Happy New Year to you too Rob! [:)]
I did make some new years resolutions but I dare not reveal since most likely these will fail! [:D]
Otherwise pretty normal everyday stuff. The older daughter is "big" now. Allthough she doesn't speak yet (A bit over 2 years now) but she does not understand talk very well. As you can expect she is stubborn as ... well... her father! [:D][:(]
The younger daughter is readying crawl... not yet there but she is getting there. Also seems to have stubborn mind ...but luckily she seems not to have temper!
Really didn't do much during Christmas and New Year. Quiet times at home. I guess the most suprising part was that the older daughter didn't mind Santa Claus...eherm.. she was too busy opening for the presents. [:D]
The work life also continues busy. I guess it never really does quiet down in IT world! Just had 1 1/2 days off due to overtime vacations and Christmas. That time really felt good and the time fly fast as expected.
All in all everything is ok if not great.
As for this PBEM... I'am struggling... I do feel many times as an worst Japanese player on this planet. I will keep going until there is no sense on going on... than I must talk to peace with Ctangus. Well... I might still have some tricks on my sleeves before this happens though! [;)]

Hi Rob,
I knew before hand that I needed 2:1 odds immediately... (Been playing with 2 day turns for ages now) ...so that was an expected result.
Yeah. I would assume he is having troubles. I'am actually going intensify these assaults so if Chuck thinks othewise he is deadly wrong.
Propably, she is babbling like a machine gun and luckily I have no clue what she is saying! [:D]
I'am looking forward to seeing you as the Emperor. Maybe with AE edition? ...or some smaller campaign. I might actually squeeze in an Guadacanal scenario if you would like to get your feet wet as Japanese! [:D] PM me if intrested.
