What is status of POW. Prob need to take it out of theater for repairs. expect more of that shipyard air raid thing.

Let me suggest the art of the counterpulse is deciding when to pounce. let the conditions be right, and let the engagement occur on or very near on of your bases. Agree that the first months of the game sometimes can be hard to watch empire victory theater. You have chosen your battles, Zingers and Palembang. be strong and wise there. You can win by winning there - strategically - by either slowing the empire down taking the critical booty or actually holding it - - - and shorten the war considerably. try not to get bent over other empire advances, and don't thin out your forces. It isn't your total forces that count. It is ONLY the forces at the point of battle. Get those forces where you need them! Easy to say, but there it is.

Really, you are well along the way. If you ever have a really bad turn, I'll be the first to empathize!

The POW is 15 SYS, 78 (64) Flood, 34 (30) ENG, Cruise spd 2 kts. She went straight into pierside repair automatically at Batavia and I removed her immediately, but have another 2 days before I can move her.

I understand what you are saying, perfectly in fact. The Japanese are in big trouble strategically, and do not realize it yet. At Singapore I was finally able to reorg the 9th Indian Div when the Japanese destroyed the fragment that was still in Malaysia, combat power in Singapore just jumped to 1295, and will go higher as the new general of the 9th Indian gets things in order in his division.

The combat power of Palembang just went up about 50% when the 18th British finally transitioned out of strat. With the new units unloading in Oosthaven, Palembang is going to be a major headache, not to mention Batavia and Soerabaja are turning into their own little mini-fortresses now.

Airstrikes have finally commenced on Singapore and Bataan, but were mostly inconsequential, the Cap in both places giving better than they took. Surprisingly, zeros took part in neither attack, and now that I think about it, I haven't seen any, non carrier-based zeros in a while now. I wonder where they are.....

Operation Big Ambush is happening this turn at Wuchow with two Chinese fighter units now at Wuchow and the 1st AVG on LR CAP.

1300 AV in Zingers prob not enough to hold it, but it should take a while, especially with the supply. Time will tell if he diverts Burma forces to take care of Zingers. Do you have AA units in Zingers or Palembang? 2-3 in each will really make it painful assuming he finally beats your CAP.

You definitely want to switch our commanders in Zingers as soon as possible starting at the very top if you haven't...

Switching the top commanders in Singapore was one of my first priorities, and morale has improved significantly as a result.

Here is the AA composition in Singapore

The 18th British Div. has some decent organic AA, and the 6th and 7th Heavy AA are unloading in Oosthaven as we speak. Apparently the Japanese haven't figured out what is going on in Palembang yet.

Question, is it worth the supply consumption to continue building forts past level 4?

Higher forts means fewer troop casualties if he does land bombing. They don't help much against port or airfield attacks. If he does attack with tanks, higher forts will make up for a lot of shortfall in A/T power. I would build up to max six.

Yes.

Re-check your understanding of how refineries act to produce supply. PBang should be rolling in supply pretty soon, especially if you turn stockpiling on. If you hold Djambi for the Oil supply great, but even without Djambi PBang has boo coo Oil inside the fence (900). You may want to send some supply to Oost from CT and carry Fuel back to CT (on xAKs) while Oost is a viable port, but you don't have to.

The Fort-building costs don't really spike until you get north of Level 6.

Also, if you are part-way to the next fort level when they get knocked down by combat you don't start over at zero the next turn. You get credit for the partial. So, for example, if you have Level 3 + 50% and combat knocks them down to Level 2, the next day you might be at Level 2 + 28%.

See my AAR in the Singers siege era for Tracker shots.

I was mainly thinking it terms of the PI because the fort is about to go to 4 at Bataan, and supplies are lower there, but you answered my question.

I am now seeing a little more how the Japanese have screwed the pooch strategically in letting me reinforce Palembang. I was thinking more tactically in terms of mutually supporting strong points in building up Palembang.

Another question occurred to me:

When the Japs come across the creek at Singapore, do I want all of my troops on "combat" and some on reserve? Currently I have the lone armored unit and the two Australian brigades in reserve, primarily to conserve their strength when the shock attack happens, but I don't know if this is a good idea in terms of the combat code...

It'll take awhile to reduce Singapore. Yes, put anyone who needs it on rest now, then when they arrive put low morale high fatigue units in reserve. Try and keep engineers fortifying until he's bombing you so much you can't keep up with the repairs.

Yes, that makes sense. Until recently I have had every unit without an AA tube or engineer in rest mode, and frankly because Singapore has been totally unharassed until recently all the units are in good shape. The new leaders I put in early on have definitely helped morale.

Looks tough for the PoW. You have the following choices: Try to make southern Australia and wait a couple years for an ARD, try to make Columbo where she will be vulnerable to a carrier raid or worse, try to make Cape Town. All very risky with that much flotation damage. Is 68 after temporary repairs? You might make it to Columbo. Once there I believe you can repair some of the flotation damage and then send her to Cape Town, I believe you should get it down to about 40, put her on readiness and after a time she'll be released. Bullwinkle has a thread on ship repair that explains all that. Don't take my word for it.

I'd expect your speed to improve to 8 or 10 kts. in the next week or so.

I tend to use Reserve very sparingly. If a unit had not been in combat and I wasn't sure what was coming over the causeway I'd have everybody at battlestations until I had a 100% read on what was in the stack.

Even units without engineers might have Support you need. I never have fully determined whether Support contributes to the pot in Rest, or Reserve. But Support is a very important algorithm factor not talked about enough in the forum IMO.

Alfred's Ship Repair Guide is the document.

tm.asp?m=2990845&mpage=1&key=ship%2Crepair

Batavia is a death trap. Two kts is as well. CT is your best option, but she has maybe a 10% chance at best of making it now. I don't share the Gorn's fear of carrier raids on Colombo so much; he must have been burned once. [:)] Colombo ought to be a fortress inside 60 days for the Allied player and get stronger from there. But you have almost no chance of making Colombo on the IO side either. Two kts makes her I-boat meat.

I concur. She pulled pulled out, bound for CT, last turn with three healthy DD's to assist in pumping.

I left all of the HQ units on combat, so I had support to spare. And 10-4 on the battle stations.

Agree POW prob a loss if you have to move her that far. But perhaps you will get lucky. If she could spend 2 weeks in Soerebaja, she'd be able to make the trip.

Question - what commander types are best for moving cripples - high admin?

Tough call, but some cripples do make it.

Soerabaja is unsafe, and he knows where the POW is, four Nells (only four! [:D]) just unsuccessfully attacked her as she was coming out of Batavia. I expect the area to be saturated with the IJN soon, which is unfortunate because of the FP and Singapore supply operations going on at the moment. I will work on an update soon.
