Thankyou for the information, PzB! Anyway, you can tell from that map Japan is on the defensive. How many divisions do you currently host in The Philippines and Japanese India (......Japanese India has a nice ring to it......) and the rest of the DEI and Burma, if you don't mind me asking? Also, is there any chance you can put an end to Chiang Kai-Shek?

But apart from that, this has to be the first game I have seen where India has been fully taken and occupied by the Japanese!

But still, for the Emperor!

There are some 7-8 divisions in the PIs, another 3-4 in Formosa and 3-4 in the Okinawas. I've reduced Imperial presence in India due to more...pressing concerns in the East!-) Still, some 3-4 divisions in India and all bases there have 9 forts. Same with PI, Okinawas and Formosa.

We are too strong for Andy to defeat us in a quick campaign in these areas, guess that's why he's trying to get access to bases close to the Home Islands.
He didn't count on our brave Samurais defending the Bonins though [:-]

We got a mutual agreement that Japan won't occupy the rest of China. In return the Allies won't go onto the offensive there.
Ground combat had some flaws and already early on I didn't feel it was right to conquer all of China, even though it would have given us an auto victory,
There have been other games were India has been conquered, by I think this was the first AAR were it happened, caused some paranoia among the Allied fanboys [;)]

Just watched the combat replay from the next turn. Too tired and drunk to play it [:'(] but I can give you a few teasers!
Andy concentrated his efforts on Bonin Jima! Our fleet ran away, but reacted to their attacks. Numerous enemy ships were hit by mines and sunk by our ships.
Our destroyers took a severe beating in the process, mainly because of the very long and protracted surface combats that left our ships without ammo and vulnerable
to the numerous enemy destroyers there. Still, out capital ships are mostly intact as clouds saved them from enemy bombers. We shoot down some 110 enemy ac for some 320 Japanese. Andy is not any closer to suppressing our defenses [8D]

The goodies!
A dozen enemy destroyers sunk, damaged or crippled [8D]
CL Vincennes reported sunk [8D][8D]
USS Essex torpedoed by sub [8D][8D][8D]
Enemy CVE hit by 2 torps and destroyed in massive ammunition explotion [8D][8D][8D][8D]

The Empire will prevail! [&o]

This turn was cruel and bloody! A quick count shows that Japan lost 20 destroyers, 1 cl (training cruiser)
and 2 ca's heavily damaged plus a vast number of patrol crafts and some transports and 1 submarine sunk (the one that torpedoed the cve at Marcus Island).

The US suffered as well: 1 cv torpedoed, 1 cve heavily damaged and left sinking after taking 2 torpedoes, 1 cl reported sunk (Vincennes at Marcus Island),
1 heavy cruiser mined, some 20 destroyers sunk or heavily damaged and several battleships with a lot of sys damage from coastal guns and multiple surface
combat engagement, 3 AO's mined, 1 AE mined, 1 DE torpedoed together with several landing and support craft.

Most of the Combined Fleet is now in need of repair, but I got the Taiho operational with some destroyers and is planning to send her behind the enemy lines to
hit Andy's supply lines. We still got a battle fleet, but I will not send them back into battle unless I have to as all have sys damage between 18 and 35.
Most of our cruisers except 1 are also out of action.

We're now depending more and more on our numerous subs and smaller TFs. I can't complain however, the losses inflicted upon the enemy is severe and I'm happy to
exchance ships at this rate in 1945! Our airfields in the Bonins have been replenished with new fighters, bombers and kamikaze units while more troops are being
flown in and unloaded from transports.

I've start wondering whether Andy will try to invade Bonin instead, but this cannot be so. He got 60-70k troops stuck in Iwo, has to finish this job first.
Anyway, I will continue reinforcing both islands, but Iwo the most [8D]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/23/45

Don't think Andy expected a major minefield at Bonin..it cost him - a lot!
1 heavy cruiser, 10 destroyers, 3 AOs and one AE were mined today...

Night Surface Combat

I had a TF of destroyers with sys damage in their 20's at Bonin. Hoped to repulse small
enemy destroyer attacks. They met the full US battle fleet and were all sunk!

I had evacuated all my fleets, but one had react on and came back in the PM turn to phase
a dozen enemy destroyers in prolonged battle. After running out of ammo pretty early on almost
all myst destroyers were sunk and the 2 heavy cruisers received a heavy pummeling.

This was ugly, surface combat model..not at its best. Still, we savaged another dozen enemy
destroyers. Even the US must be running low by now.

Daytime Surface Battles

We lost another 10 destroyers in the day phase, so did Andy!
Must admit that the battles were strange. My only solution must be that TFs doesn't have
ammo for prolonged daylight battles and when they meet multiple enemy TFs they will be sunk
no matter how outnumbered and outmatched the opponents are!

This first battle was still not possible to understand. We outnumbered our opponents big time, but
that didn't help much. At long range our cruisers should have finished 3 enemy destroyers before they
could have done much damage.

Btw: Clouds protected Bonin from air attacks, but the sweeps were as efficient as ever. Incredible seldom that Marcus Island and the enemy
carriers are shut down by bad weather....

Also thought about that Japan gained more points for kills in 45, but couldn't find anything about this in the manual Rob!

Really strange.... few US destroyers crippled your Navy...hmph..phew!

I'm interested (as always) too about heavy industry status. How many HI points left? how many oil and resources left? It would be pitty that you get Shinden but no HI points in stocks....

Are you already start to fortify Home Islands, especially the bases in the clear terrain (i don't think that Andy will go for wooded, mountainous or even urban hex bases)?

And the last, do you think that bombardment of the enemy troops worth the supply costs? The good thing is bombardment aims the support troops mostly and Amph Corp HQs wont be able to support enemy troops but...

Got some 913k HI points left as well as 1.3 mill oil. Can't remember resources, but some 2-3 million I guess.
No worries we'll run out over the next year [:)]

Guess that's what upset Andy so much, ammo expandages in surface combat - especially against non combatants.
The advantages his destroyers have against my fleets are enormous to say the least...

All bases in Home Islands are fortified, most with 9 forts and a regiment or full division in place.
No way he can make landings there anytime soon. Not with the problems the Bonins are giving him.

Thinking about air or sea bombardments?

I think he means your troops on Iwo.. with all the artillery there, how much supply does it use to put them on "bombardment" rather than defensive?

Excellent defence my good sir! The Emperor will be pleased that the Marcus Hendan Garrison fought to the last man.....

Actually, I did want to ask you about that but did the Garrison literally fight to the last man? Or were they casualties from surrendering soldiers?

And also, what is it like to get a Banzai charge? Does it inflict more casualties upon the enemy? I did read in the manual it is only done as a result of near annihilation by the enemy.

Lastly, in regards to your defences, is there anyway that Andy could take both Iwo Jima and Bonin successfully or could this turn very literally into a stalemate? I was wondering, like with your air and naval units being less effective in 1945 if that also applied to the army itself, considering that Japanese casualty rates were also alot higher than their Allied counterparts.

BANZAI! FOR THE EMPEROR!

I was thinking about gaining our rookie troops some exp with these bombardments attacks.
Not very efficient at present, but we got 63k supplies ashore and another 50k unloading. So I thought a good
trashing could be worth a few supplies [:D]

It's a good way to measure the strength of the opposing force. I'm trying to land as many artillery pieces as
possible. When we got a clear advantage we should be inflicting some 2-400 casualties pr day.

Oh yes, the garrison at Marcus all fought to the last man. No surrenders [&o]
Banzai charges sometimes cause some casualties, but not alot. Sometimes Jap garrisons are incredible difficult to
wipe out though.

THAT is a good question Jap Spirit! I have no idea what Andy will do next. He seems just as determined to capture the
Bonins as Hitler was on Stalingrad. The amount of reinforcements pooring in will make it extremely difficult for him.
We can't disregard that Andy is right now scrounging 300k men for an all out effort. He will actually need them if we
put 100k troops there including a 1000 guns. Personally I think it's madness. He's loosing way too many first line ships
and ac. Even if he manage to take Iwo Jima, it will come as such an horrendous cost.

My air units are NOT less effective in 1945, neither is the army. Andy's radar equipped ships and high speed fighters are
just SO much more effective than mid 1942 vintage unit were.

Been a busy day, still, managed to take a preliminary look at the next turn, and here are some of the highlights:

2 enemy carriers hit by kamikazes
5 enemy destroyers sunk
Another batch of enemy naval ac shot down!

No serious damage was suffered by Japan, but another 300 ac were shot down.
The Northern Area Army has been unloaded within range of the Bonins and another large Area Army HQ is unloading at Bonin.
This should increase our defensive value by xx%!

Will give you a detailed report tomorrow! Here's a screen showing our heroic frigates fighting 3 enemy destroyers to give up
their pursuit of our transports. Later in the day dive and torpedo bombers shattered the enemy! [:D]

They were, but that only applied to the smallest TF. The big TF with 2 CA's and 10 undamaged destroyers
were still completely destroyed by a dozen enemy destroyers.... and we had far better night combat exp and radar as well.

Since I had moved that last large TF away from Bonin at full speed, you shall know that I was surprised to see them zoom back into
the hex to intercept during daylight phase [X(] Lots of unfortunate losses, but that's war for you.

Still, I got the feeling that we're dragging Andy into a mud pit were he will grind to a halt.
If we can ruin his fleet and trap his armies, the war will be all but over [:D]

The stakes are high, losses extreme, but we will prevail!

Your best Army Air Force Fighter [:)]
They're numerous and capable both as fighters, intercepters and bombers.

They will struggle against Corsairs, but can be evenly matched against Hellcats if they have good pilots
and doesn't suffer to much from the advantage provided by Allied radar.

Tokyo Rose: Victories in the Bonins!

Post by PzB74 »

I'm preparing another die hard stand in order to force Andy to withdraw his carriers.
Have to protect our transports for another few days. After this I will stand down our defenses.
The use of 500 engineers each on Bonin and Iwo will make it very difficult for Andy to close both fields.

I need to send my fighters to China to rest and receive replacement ac. Morale is woefully low in many units,
understandable enough. The Navy also requires some R&R. Will be another 6-8 months before it will be fully battle ready
again. Doubt Andy will be back in a while after we defeat him in the Bonins [:D]

With the amount of troops I'm bringing in to the islands he will have to land another 300k troops to stand a chance.
Even then it will be difficult. Maybe we can start a massive LBA campaign against the stranded troops on Iwo to wear them
down? Our long range bombers from the Marianas and Home Island can peck away at them.

Rain tomorrow: unstable weather is our best friend. Please shut down Marcus and a few cv's tomorrow Tor!!
Sometimes this creates openings for our naval bombers. It's a good thing to have low morale, if they meet the Uber CAP they
turn around instead of getting massacred.

Do you think a surprise strike with the Taiho against Andy's supply lines behind Marcus Island could be worthwhile?
60 bombers and 20 fighters could inflict some damage on transports and cripples.
