Our attack on Tuyun was successful! (8 to 1, forts 4) 18,500 POW's were taken and one of the units that surrendered was the NCAC HQ unit. We now have a road rated supply line all the way to Kweiyang, so the bulk of our army will now be well supplied. The units at Tuyun will move to Kweiyang immediately and then rest and receive replacement squads there.

Also, in the pocket southeast of Chungking, the enemy 16th Group Army HQ was forced to surrender.

In the pocket southeast of Chungking, the final enemy unit there surrendered today. The unit was identified as the 4th War area HQ unit.

Our troops resumed the fight at Hengchow, but weather kept our planes from assisting. Still, our troops made some progress. (1 to 1, forts 5 -> 4)

22 Zeros and 50 Oscars flew sweep over Chungking today, meeting 7 P-43A, 7 I-16c and 4 P-66. 13 of the enemy planes were shot down, and 1 Oscar was lost.

West of Kweiyang, our army troops again caught the 9th Group Army inflicting more casualties and forcing it to retreat again. A Chinese Guerrilla unit was forced to retreat across the river to Chungking southeast of the city. Hengchow was very nearly taken today as our air units finally were able to lend support to the attack. Our troops are nearly exhausted, but the enemy is more so and likely low on supplies. (3 to 1, forts 3 -> 2)

Hengchow continues to hang by a thread, but should crumble any day now. (3 to 1, forts 2 -> 1)

The 26th Chinese Corp surrendered in the pocket northwest of Ichang. We now have a trail supply route to the eastern side of Chungking.

Hengchow finally is captured! (21 to 1, fort 1). A tremendous amount of enemy soldiers are captured and disarmed, 102,000 of them approximately. Along with the units shown below, China Command HQ, 9th War Area, 19th Group Army and 20th Group Army HQ's all surrendered.
Image
Many Chinese surrender at Hengchow

Today's sweep over Chungking met some good Chinese pilots. 27 Zeros and 48 Oscars met 7 Lancers and 6 I-16cs, but these P-43A's knew their stuff and downed 4 Oscars and 1 Zero. We got nearly all of them though, 6 to be exact, so hopefully those good pilots are no more.

Operation Joukai Debrief

Post by FeurerKrieg »

The capture of Hengchow has brought about the end of Operation Joukai. The operation went very well in my opinion.
Goals:
Capture Liuchow - this occurred much easier than expected.
Prevent Chinese counter attack at Tuyun - Successful
Bring Northern China Army across the river near Ichang - Successful and much easier than expected. Due to this success, and the success of the SAA against Liuchow, most of the NCA forces were able to move on Kweiyang, forcing several fleeing units back to Hengchow where they later surrendered.
Capture Hengchow - Successful
Remove Southern Area Army from the theater by end of September - Not successful. Thankfully the British made no moves in Burma yet, so the SAA should be able to redeploy in time to meet any threats in Burma or Malaya.

The situation in China is now very good. Chungking is about 35% surrounded, nearly all resource centers were captured intact and we are expanding the HI in Changsha to make use of the extra oil/resources floating around the interior of China. We also now have a road rated path from Singapore to Korea. Kunming is the next target, and with luck will be easy to capture. Once that base is ours, we will have a trail rated short path from China into Burma completely under our control.

Once Kunming is captured, we will attempt to cross the river to the west of Chungking and then move a holding force into Chungking, while another force moves northwest and captures Chengtu.

An aviation unit is being airlifted from Sian to Kweiyang and most of the air units will be rebased there to be close to Chungking. It is possible enemy 4 engine bombers from Burma will attack, but we'll move in some Nick's if that occurs. Liz bombers will stay in Changsha. First target will be the airfield in Chengtu. Then we will begin escorted bombings of Chungking until the airfield of that base are unusable, then our bombers will continue to fly unescorted.

Our SAA troops begin marching from Hengchow to Canton, the rest begin heading towards Kweiyang. Otherwise it was very quiet today.

Liz and Lily bombers make the short flight from Changsha to the swamps north of the city and bomb the Chinese pocket there. These bombers will soon move up to Kweiyang and bomb Chengtu.

Our fighters and bombers have rebased to Kweiyang. The Liz bombers are still in Changsha. Everything will hit Chengtu tomorrow. We haven't swept that base for a while, and recon indicates some bombers are at the airfields there.

Naga (Philippines) and Picton (New Zealand) both expanded their airfields today. (sz 4)

Some action today.

In the Pacific, 9 Bettys attacked Johnston Island. 16 P-38Fs tried to stop them and 2 Bettys were shot down. The 7 that got through managed to put a torpedo into the MSW Catbird, sinking the ship instantly.

Enemy minesweeper sunk

In China, the weather was perfect for our raid of Chengtu. 47 Osacrs and 27 Zeros escorted 110 Lily II, and 27 Sallys from Kweiyang to Chengtu. They met a CAP of 4 I-16c and 3 I-153c. These enemy planes were all shot down and the bomber pounded the airfields hard. A bit later, 41 Liz bombers from Changsha hit the airfields also, further damaging them. Along with the seven Chinese fighters shot down, 6 I-153c, 2 I-16c, 13 SB-2c and 5 IL-4c were all destroyed on the ground. Intel indicates there are no more operational planes at Chengtu and the airbase is heavily damaged if even usable at all.

October 18th, 1942 - Allied air attacks

Post by FeurerKrieg »

October 18th, 1942
The Allied air forces struck back today on all fronts.

60 Heavy Bombers from India hit Kweiyang. Our Zeros and Oscars managed to shoot down 2 B-24D Liberators, and damaged 15 of the other bombers. Several Lily IIs were lost on the ground, and damage was moderate, but with 600+ engineers at the base, it should be repairs fairly quickly. A Chutai of Nicks and a Sentai of A6M3 will be brought in to bolster the air defenses of the base. A couple AA regiments from Northeastern China have also been order to move to Kweiyang. One AA unit is already there.
Image
Payback in China

44 P-40E Warhawks flew a sweep over Mandalay and found 7 Tojos on CAP. Two of our planes were lost, to none of theirs.

In the Pacific, 75 A-29 Hudson bombers from Hawaii attacked Palmyra. Our 21 Oscars damaged many and shot down 3 of the bombers. Airfield damaged was light, although 3 Betty bombers were destroyed on the ground. Some Nicks at Port Moresby will be moved to Palmyra as well as some Zeros from Kwajelein.
Image
Long distance attack

A probing attack by an SNLF unit across the river into Chungking was forced back across the river immediately.Intel revealed a very strong force at the city of over 400,000 troops. (Adjusted defense of the base was 79,397!!)

San Fernando in the Philippines expanded its airfield today. (sz 2)

More air attacks today. At Palmyra, B-24Ds attacked, our Oscars were all in the air today, and damaged all the bombers. A couple crashed on the way home. We lost 3 Bettys on the ground.

In Burma, Hurricanes flew over Myitkina in both the morning and afternoon. Both times our Tonys met them, and both times three Hurricanes went down. We lost no Tonys in the morning, but lost 2 in the afternoon.

Akyab was attacked as well, and although 7 Tonys were on CAP, only 1 Liberator III was damaged.

Large air attack on Chungking today. 108 Lily II, 15 Zero and 27 Oscars fought through 18 P-43A and 8 I-16c to moderately damage the Chungking airfields. Our Liz bombers were due to arrive, but could not take off due to poor weather at Changsha. 7 P-43A and 5 I-16c were lost in the air and on the ground.

Some Hurricanes bombed Myitkyina today. 7 Tonys there shot one of the enemy fighters down.

Thanks! I'm trying to catch up this weekend to the game, but it tough since we play several turns on Sat and Sun. I'm treading water about 7-8 days behind the actual game. When I'm caught up I tend to spend more time on nicer screenshots and historical pics.

27 Zeros and 29 Oscars escorted 87 Lily II bombers to Chungking. They met 18 P-43A, and 5 I-16c. In air and on the ground, 5 P-43As, 4 I-16c, and 3 SB-2c were destroyed. 4 Zeros and 6 Oscars were lost. These were A6M3 Zeros that had some new guys flying. Over the next week we should be able to put up more Nicks, Tonys and Tojo over Kweiyang to protect it from heavy bomber raids.

Our troops began to bombard Kunming in preparation of attacking the base.

Allied heavy bombers return to bomb Kweiyang, but this time we were a bit better prepared. Although most bombers got through, we made them hurt a little today. Thankfully when the bombers hit the airbase, our own Lily II bombers were away supporting the ground assault at Kunming.
Image
Allied heavys take some blows

The toll when all was done at Kweiyang was: (A2A losses/Ground Losses)
Japan
A6M2 Zero: 1/1
A6M3 Zero: 1/2
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 0/1
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 0/5
Ki-48-II Lily: 0/8
Ki-15 Babs: 0/1
Total: 20

Allies (all A2A & Ops)
B-24D Liberator: 7 (6 were also turned back before bombing)
Liberator III: 6
B-17D Fortress: 3
Total: 16

Not too bad, considering that most of all our pilots survived to fight again and that the damage to the airbase will be mostly fixed by tomorrow. More fighters are enroute to the area, and soon we will exact a higher price for these attacks.

The assault on Kunming proceed well again. (3 to 1, forts 5 -> 4)
