Task Force Spruance Strikes Sinkawang!

The badly damaged POW limped out of Batavia harbor, and promptly crawled back to Batavia per orders of the AI. To rectify this I changed the orders to “Remain on station” and routing to “direct”; I am not sure if it will work though. Anyway, the Japanese spotted the cripple just outside of Batavia and sent a strike of four Nells which were fortunately deterred by Batavia’s CAP.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Batavia at 49,98

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
G3M2 Nell x 4

Allied aircraft
B-339D x 5

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
BB Prince of Wales, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo

Normally, strikes of about 30 Nells from Sinkawang are common, but ADM. Spruance of the US Navy disrupted that:

Night Naval bombardment of Singkawang at 56,88

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 18 damaged
G3M2 Nell: 4 destroyed on ground
A6M2 Zero: 3 damaged
A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
CA Houston
CL Boise
CL Mauritius
CL Tromp
CL De Ruyter
CL Java
DD Banckert

Japanese ground losses:
336 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 49 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 7 disabled

Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 23
Port hits 2
Port supply hits 3

On the Task Force’s way into Sinkawang it discovered, and sunk a DD and an AP full of troops that I suspect were an AA unit of some type. In the engagement with the DD, the Dutch Destroyer took moderate damage from two shell hits. The totally BEST part of this attack (Not!) was that Task Force Spruance was ordered to “Remain on Station”, an unfortunate vestigal ordre from the previous turn, so the TF remained at Sinkawang, at Full Speed I might add, all day. Japanese Nells, of course, attacked:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Singkawang at 56,88

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 64 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 25 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 25
G3M2 Nell x 11

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M2 Nell: 5 damaged

Allied Ships
CA Houston
CL Mauritius
CL Tromp
CL Boise

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x G3M2 Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo

The lack of hits was fortuitous.

The IJN mKB attacked Soerabaja the previous turn without much damage to the port:

Afternoon Air attack on Soerabaja , at 56,104

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 15
A6M2 Zero x 14
B5N1 Kate x 24
B5N2 Kate x 27
D3A1 Val x 35

Allied aircraft
B-339D x 10
CW-21B Demon x 12
75A-7 Hawk x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N1 Kate: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged
D3A1 Val: 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-339D: 2 destroyed
CW-21B Demon: 1 destroyed
75A-7 Hawk: 1 destroyed

Port hits 3

In an air attack on Singapore this turn, the Japanese suffered significant numbers of damaged aircraft from the not-insignificant AA at that base in a foretaste of the bloodshed to come.

Not sure what you did here. If you want her to go to CT set CT as the homeport AND the destination, set threat to Absolute (drive through air superiority), speed to Cruise, waypoint if you like and hope.

If you set Remain on station with CT as a destination but Batavia as a homeport . . . I think the AI might have a nervous BD.

Not sure you ever said you set Batavia to homeport, so . . .

Sometimes no matter what you do, if damage is very high, as here, and the CO is cautious, he'll run for the nearest port.

That is basically what I did the first time - set destination and homeport to CT, but changed no other settings except for auto-disband.

If changing the threat setting to absolute still doesn't work for you, try making the journey in smaller steps. Set the destination and home port as Cocos Islands to start, for example, then go from there. I've only seen two TFs ever that refused to accept my orders for a longer voyage to a port with a shipyard (the way yours seems to be doing now), but they did accept the smaller step by step instructions and finally made it to where I wanted them to go.

The changes I made are working, thanks.

POW's chances of survival have improved, and the Palembang Caper is out of the bag.

RE: POW's long trip home

I managed to get POW out in similar situation by using a Dutch AR to "follow". For whatever reason this actually assisted the floatation damage on way back to Colombo.

Don't. It would do nothing. BBs and other large combatants seem to have an extra chance the crew can fix some system and minor flooding in transits if system isn't too high. Makes sense. But repair ships don't operate underway. In RL or the game.

The POW is sunk, or is it?

In the email with the last turn Skyros found it funny that he sank the POW two turns in a row. Apparently his Nell pilots from yesterday’s attack claimed they sunk the POW, and in today’s the Nells sank an AP at Batavia, apparently mistaking it for the POW. Well, who am I to disabuse the Japanese of their wishful thinking? Since I have zero submarine activity in the Indian Ocean, nothing west of the archipelagos, and Skyros is unlikely to hunting for a ship he already sank, the POW’s chances have improved in my opinion.

The worst news of the day was an attack on shipping in Oosthaven’s harbor:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Oosthaven at 48,96

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 11 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
G3M2 Nell x 6

Allied aircraft
B-339D x 6

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
B-339D: 2 destroyed

Allied Ships
xAP Glenartney
xAP Empire Star
xAP Felix Roussel, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

There are only three reasons for AP’s to be at Oosthaven:
1) Misuse of ships for supply transport, Skyros would probably not think this about me by this point in the game.
2) Loading out Dutch units for service elsewhere,
3) Reinforcing Sumatra

I expect some recon flights or bombers over Palembang soon. In a few short turns Palembang will be a flak nightmare for Japanese pilots.

Arriving by rail in Palembang next turn will be the AT unit and the first of the Heavy AA units. Currently, there are 701 AV and 48874 supply in Palembang, and the fort level is 2 plus 70%

In other news about the Pacific, Kendari has been invaded and is not expected to last long, Japanese carriers have been supporting this landing and appear to be heading towards Timor. The Canton Island refugees were just about to start disembarking, but have been ordered to flee towards Darwin at the fastest speed possible.

P-40E squadrons have materialized in Brisbane with highly impressive pilots averaging in the 30’s experience. I culled several of the top pilots in training squadrons in the States, sending them to the general reserve. Next turn I will start them on their way to these squadrons, if the KB shows up again I would like to have more than spitballs to throw at it.

The slew of damaged ships in Sydney, including the Lex, will be starting their torturous journey westward soon, the worst damaged ships will stop in Melbourne for a while. The Japanese were unable to sink any of my ships in Sydney, it appears that my desperate hope to dilute the air attacks on the port by leaving dozens of freighter hulls in the port worked, although it was costly. When I saw the Japanese coming, and knew the Lex would be trapped, I left all of those AK’s in the port rather than have them flee; I lost several, but the Lex still lives. Sydney’s port will soon be a ghost town.

Generally speaking, whenever a torpedo hits a BB or CA the code reports the ship sunk to the other side. And when/if it does sink there is a 98% chance the wrong ship will be reported under FOW. Heck, about 50% of the time in 1942 you get FOWed on your own ships' names.

Rough couple of days for Japanland bombers

In the email with his turn, Skyros griped about his Oscars not performing. I don’t know what is common practice in playing the Allies in AE, but my practice of funneling the best pilots forward to the “tip of the spear” is paying dividends.

Singapore’s airfield was the target of several large raids from bases across Malaysia, with minimal damage done. Losses in Japanese bombers were high as the British Buffalos stampeded them from the skies. The sad remnants of the Philippine air force keeps giving better than it takes – every turn I think “OK, now I withdraw those pilots”, but they keep disrupting the air attacks nicely, so they stay another day. Even the Chinese have gotten into the act at Wuchang:

Morning Air attack on Wuchow , at 76,57

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 38 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ia Oscar x 12
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 16

Allied aircraft
I-16-III x 5
I-15-III x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 1 destroyed, 9 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
I-16-III: 1 destroyed

And here is the first air attack on Singapore:

Morning Air attack on Singapore , at 50,84

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 25
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 18

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 27

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 7 destroyed, 3 damaged
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 1 destroyed

Nell stayed home today, but I did notice a surface combat TF is camped out at Sinkawang now, which is fine by me, because I do not want to tempt fate with another attack there.

Kendari fell today. The ever-friendly and well-rested B-17 crews on Java will visit the base as a kind of “Aerial Welcome Wagon”.

The first brigade of the Australian 6th Division arrived in Aden, whom I have been eagerly awaiting. Many transports are enroute to the base in anticipation of transporting them to Burma. Depending on the situation in Sumatra, I may even send them to reinforce Palembang, but I haven’t decided one way or the other as yet.

The submarine threat around Pearl Harbor has abated, so the first convoy from there headed for Australia is loading. Going along are the Coastal AA and Marine CD units, as well as the consolidated P-40B and B-17 units; the P-40E squadron was disbanded in anticipation of upgrading the AVG as soon as Bombay makes it to level 7 airfield. All of these units were staffed with fresh-faced pilots straight from the schools, and while they are eagerly anticipating tangling with the Japanese, they little suspect that as soon as they reach their destinations they will be replaced with experienced cadres.

Singapore is at forts 3 plus 84%, 72963 supply, and 1323 AV. Intelligence reports 14 Japanese units across the creek.

I think your secret is out. He prob knows about FP and FS. Now it gets interesting. Use the time wisely, considering your fleet status, I would expect a blockade to succeed if he tries it. let me suggest readying an invasion of Marshalls from Hawaii if he concentrates KB at DEI.

What does the recon result across from Zingers tell you about force size?

Wow I am glad I copied this post to the clipboard before I hit "OK" (the first time). [:)]

Agreed. I don't think Singapore was a big secret, but he doesn't know how much I have invested in new leaders for the forces there - I have replaced nearly every leader in Singapore, and have been running supply in there almost non-stop. I haven't managed to raise supply levels above the low 70's for long, but at least I am replacing what is getting used. I have not scouted the force across from Singapore, I really didn't think it mattered; they are coming irregardless. I will scout those forces, and the five units coming down the road after eliminating my last holdouts in Malaysia.

I agree that if he decides to blockade Sumatra, there won't be anything I can do about it. With his invasion of Kendari, it is looking like he wants to encircle the DEI with aircover before he finishes his conquests there, which I think is a mistake. He seems to be thinking like an Allied player rather than a Japanese one; slow and steady does NOT win the race for the Japanese. I believe he is in for a very unpleasant surprise before too much longer. His foray down the Australian coast was flashy, but he would have been better served hitting Soerabaja, Batavia, and Palembang in my opinion, especially considering that he did not finish off a single capital ship.

I am not sure if I will be able to invade anywhere in the Pacific for a while. In the early game I loaded up most of my transports and tankers on the WC, and sent them off to supply Australia. I did not realize how much supply and fuel was available in the off-map bases surrounding the Indian Ocean. It will be a while before I have substantial shipping in the Eastern Pacific again.

Since so much of my shipping is in, or almost in the Indian Ocean, I am routing a lot of strength to Cape Town via Magic Movement from the East Coast - I might as well turn my mistake into a positive if I can.

ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ

It has been a real snoozer for the last couple of turns. The Allies have lots of stuff going in the background, and I assume the Japanese do too.

After the bomber losses the Japanese have suffered, they have resorted to flying Fighter Sweeps over the Bataan and Singapore. I took a chance last turn and gave the fighter crews a rest at Singapore so the Oscars found nothing to entertain themselves with. The fighters will be back up this turn.

Singapore is 92% of the way to forts 4. There are now 15 units reported across from the base, and have ordered a Blenheim recon to see what I can find out.

I disbanded the two remaining fighter squadrons at Bataan, each had one plane left, and both were in the shop for an extended period of time, so it was time to harvest my pilots from there.

The Saratoga is approaching the WC from the south, and will repair at San Diego. I know there are better repair yards available, but the other ports are crawling with subs, and didn't want to risk it; I have lost too many freighters in those waters.

The Japanese seem to up to more tricks near Australia (see image). I don't know where they are going, but there isn't much off in that direction to see. The TF at Timor, not spotted btw, has orders to run away more in the opposite direction. When I am finally able to get them completely offloaded, Timor will be a difficult nut to crack with Japan's typical invasion numbers.

I meant to add to the update:

I have another fighter trap in the works in China. The Japanese have been training about 50 Sally pilots hitting a lone Chinese Corps moving through the mountains near Chengting, and I have the AVG 1st Sqn., and some Chinese friends, ready to move into Yenen for some LR CAP over the poor LCU. I decided to wait before moving them because Yenen will be going to level 2 airfield next turn.

My Clue(tm) board game solution attempt is that this is the 4 Mogami CAs plus 4 DDs, and that they are heading either to the Bay of Bengal (that's a long trip) or more likely to the Darwin area. They may be heading to Koepang, but the SW vector (if reliable) seems to indicate that he's trying to skirt it rather than head for it.
