Well, Raver's boys bombing Lunga did a better job this turn, co-ordinating a raid from Luganville with Lightnings from nevea and beaufighters from Wupenko. As a result his bombers did get through and put Lunga out of commission for an afternoon or so. Will be repaired by tomorrow. Again, my experienced fighters carried the brunt of the work while my Oscars were there to get shot at - although the Oscar squadrons both got their first 2 kills each this turn.

Total allied aircraft lost this turn was 26, while I only lost 4 in the air and 10 on the ground. Raver's best raid on Lunga so far however.

In other less interesting news, Tokyo has about 60 APs sitting ni the harbour doing nothing. I have calculated the number of ships I need to a: supply and reinforce my troops against an enemy bombing campaign and b: the number of transports I will need to mount a small invasion.
Just 5 or 10 of them would allow me to go back over to the offensive - and put one helluva hole in Raver's plans.

There is a very BIG lesson here children, and I had to learn it the hard way so listen up and learn.

BEAUFIGHTERS DON'T MAKE GOOD BOMBER ESCORTS!

That last little trip over to Lugna nearly wiped out an entire squadron. :(

They are nearly as bad as the Oscars;)

Beaufighters armed with torpedoes are as good as beauforts (best allied anti shipping LBA).

However beaufighters come into their own if they are experienced and rested in the alter stages of the game when the USN has Irau or PM or GG or any small base out there somewhere - and the IJN is trying to avoid USN airpower by using lots of barges.

Beaufighters are the best barge killers in the game - I've had 20 beaufighters attack 25 AGs twice, and leave 20 of them sinking.

However they were highly experienced pilots.

Lots of invasion like activity in Raver's ports. Surface combat groups, CVs, transports, landing ships etc. Irau and Lunga are very secure - impregnable at this stage of the game. GG is going to cost him lots and lots of whips and troops, and PM is going to cost him almost as much.

However this why I've moved extra INF units to Russell Islands, Munda, Gasmata, Dobadura and Buna - in case he tries to bypass the big bases and steal a smaller one (as I hope to do later!).

Raver probably has a hard time supplying all his little bases near Santa Cruz - and he isn't dumb enough to leave any of them without at least one INF unit (one can hope, but he isn't going to make it too easy for me).

This is all pure bluff from Luskan....there is now way that he could afford to attack down into the Santa Cruz Island chain....he would be eaten alive by air attacks, and there are just to many airfields for he to close.

Thanks for the tip about the smaller bases Russell Islands, Munda, Gasmata, Dobadura and Buna .......now to bomb the cr@p out of them!:D

All very quiet and tense . . . worrying that Raver is resting for his big push so I've sent some surface raiders out to cause some mischief.

Luskan was very lucky....the afternoon airstrikes were unable to find his ships in the bad weather (friggin thunderstorms again!) and a number of them escaped back to Lugna.

I really need a long lance only attack option. What the hell these guys were thinking - CLOSING with the BBs???

I lost four of the nine destroyers - with two others sitting at shortlands now, badly damaged. The other three dds and the Agano (copped a 14 inch shell hit and only at 15 sys) are all under 20 sys and will go into the repair cycle.

In other news, the Mutsu (hit by a couple of torps and a bunch of bombs six months ago) has reached 0 sys once more and has moved from her dock in Truk to join the fleet at Rabaul.

Essentially I'm now waiting for Raver to come at me with everything he has - my pilots at Lunga were so successful that there were 7 clear/partly cloudy turns (and two thunderstorm turns) where there was no bombing at all - anywhere in the theatre.

Raver has send a couple of mitchell raids to GG and PM to hit the already destroyed airfields again, killing a few hundred more eng troops - but the INF aren't worried in their size 9 forts, waiting for the enemy to arrive. My CD units are all, curiously, at full strength (unlike my AA, which looses a gun every raid, maybe at 70% in PM). I'm guessing that those CD units will be pretty much immune to the airfield/port attacks, while susceptible to bombardment TFs.

From the looks of things, Raver probably has the battleships to fix the bombardment issue.

On a strategic note: I had a worrying thought, reading Mogami's IJN opponent thread. Basically, as fortified, INFed and supplied up as all my major front line bases are (and Lae too now - Raver sent in some recon planes to I added another two large INF regiments last turn), Raver may be better off avoiding those bases altogether and going past the front line.

Now, if he tries Gasmata, Shortlands, Rabaul, Munda, Lae, Buna, Dobadura, Finchhaven (sp) etc. he is going to loose the game. So many troops and so many aircraft around the place he would be nuts to try it.

However considering Raver's penchant for invading useless empty dots and turning them into bases with the infinite ENG capacity of the US, I'm suddenly worried about places like Woodlark, Rennell Island etc. Will be sending some minelayers or troops out to make these "free base building opportunities" go away.

haven't had any reinforcements from japan in almost a month - and no transports from japan in about 6 months - and there are millions of them sitting there doing nothing. I'd better not have this problem in WITP!!

Like when you had your heart set on Townsville? :D :D

However - the uh "alert" status of my ships has gone up some.

Bad weather continues and you could be sneaking anywhere you wanted to in it - so 6 new squadrons of search aircraft have left Truk for the front bases.

I was dumb enough to have half a dozen destroyers caught in two turns of thunderstorms which slapped on about 10 sys damage each. Ouch.

Tempted to give my level bombers the shove at Lunga and stuff it full of my CV aircraft (not enough base support for that, but lots of base force troops at Truk that can be shipped in quick enough).
Could work well - especially since Irau is in easy reach for CV aircraft - and Lunga has done a great job resisting Raver's LBA (where PM and GG and Dobadura totally went under - just not big and bad enough).

Completed the shipments of more AA and CD unit replacements throughout my "realm" although pulling some more AA units out of PM and packing them all into lunga or GG is probably a good idea - unless Raver starts ground attacks - so far the troops there are fine, but the base, port and engineers are totalled (have been for months).

In ohter exciting news, IJN submarine Fleet 1, consisting of all my subs: all one of them, has left Truk on a top secret mission . . .

Luskan just sent an air raid of 19 Bettys escorted by 138 fighters to Wunpuko:rolleyes: Kinda seems like a waste of time as only four ships (all AKs) were hit...and only one is critical.

Now it is time to show him what an air raid is supposed to look like......Lugna is going to get Blitzed.
