I think you might really be able to kill every japanese unit at Naha, before they retreat at Nago.

I'm also wondering what kind of ships you'll find at the Cocos. Maybe some transport/supply convoy that got cut off and had nowhere else to go? Still 31 ships is a good haul of VPs...

I think that many more ships, probably including Haruna, sunk that turn. But the way FOW works we won't get admission of them for anywhere from days to the end of the game.

Doing the turn now, and a good bite taken out of the retreating troops on Okinawa. I'm pretty sure we will be able to eliminate all of those units.

My guess for Cocos is mostly merchant (x) types: xAK, xAP, etc.

The troops at Liuchow need at least one more day of rest, perhaps two or three. The counter-bombardment probably slowed their recovery but our bombardment will continue. >42,000 enemy troops appear to be mostly staying on to defend, while 2 units with ~7,500 troops have moved east and taken up position in the Woods-Rough terrain there. They block the shortest supply route to Wuchow (once Liuchow is ours). Enemy movements around Kukong and the larger area in general continue. In the mountains SE of Kunming tomorrow we will attack a previously defeated formation that we just caught up to. A base force for Wuchow and corps and army HQ units to support the assault on Canton are unloading at Kwangchowan. SWPac HQ is already at Lang Son, in range (9 hexes) of Canton.

I assume that these messages were regarding Liuchow, where we now have a 40 mm flak unit. Another 40 mm unit and a 3.7 inch equipped unit will arrive tomorrow.

4 Imperial units of 23,000 troops remain. Again rotation of some units, but still four divisions plus almost all armor will continue tomorrow. More mines removed from the harbor and possibly it is clear now. Four Corsair squadrons have moved into Naha airfield and taken up CAP duties. Port=100% damage, Service=16% damage. Bringing over the amphib force HQ in their AGC prepared for Naha helped get the base forces unloaded completely overnight. That HQ will finally retire to Guam for some vitamin C. I didn't realize that you can't see fires burning from the base display: there are still FIRES 29 burning at Naha!

Both fleet CV TF and one CVE TF have arrived near Daito Shoto and refueled from AOs. They will proceed to rejoin the fleet near Okinawa. The other CVE TF should arrive to refuel tomorrow.

OK, you see the map. Canton and Hong Kong are the current objectives. Liuchow is being taken by a separate force, which will then move any IJ units off the road so a good supply & transit route exists to Wuchow/Canton/Hong Kong.

Canton and Hong Kong will take a bit in game time, but hopefully by the new year our troops will be crossing into Hong Kong. After that, they will move along and just inland from the coast (following the best roads). Perhaps about or shortly after the new year the invasion of Formosa will go in, which will secure the sea lanes in that area plus provide large bases to support amphibious operations along the China coast.

Separately, Hokkaido probably about mid-February. That will provide size 9 airfields for B-29 operations that can reach the entire Home Islands within normal range, plus other 4EB will be able to reach the northern industries.

With Okinawa by then providing 4EB bases for operations against southern industries, plus one base (Naha) large enough for B-29 operations, we will be able to start serious preparations for invading the Home Islands. Formosa also might operate B-29 depending on timing of airfield development.

The islands west of Kyushu are the ones in the Nudge and Nudge Closer operations that I am holding in abeyance for the Hokkaido operation. The ones I've had a look at so far are garrisoned, but they have to be targets before getting bogged down on Kyushu itself.

OK on Hokkaido. I will check Intel as the operation gets closer, but I guess it depends on when things arrive and where he sent them. I am preparing what I am pretty sure will be much more than adequate forces to take Kushiro and Muroran, although my first plan is to march them there from Kushiro not land at Muroran. Most of the Okinawa area and Iwo Jima troops will be involved.

Night bombing the Home Islands: I still want to hold off until January 1, 1945. That's not agreed upon nor have I communicated that to Walter. Of course if I can pull off daytime strikes that would be great, and the combination of the Okinawa area and Hokkaido would allow strikes by any 4EB type almost anywhere in the Home Islands. Nudge and Nudge Closer would also help with fighter sweeps and escorts as you point out, and maybe I should start looking at eventually grabbing the islands south of Tokyo for the same purpose.

Our troops in the mountains need to rest. But at Liuchow they are ready to attack and will do so tomorrow. Air strikes have been very effective and now movement is seen out of Liuchow to the NE, toward Kweilin, and we shall give them a running start! The first 3 divisions and a combat engineer group have reached Wuchow and are marching right on to Canton. It will be nice to have artillery and AA as it arrives but for now we will shut down whatever industry ceases in the presence of hostile forces.

Three divisions are changing to strat mode for sea lift. All the armor and artillery, plus two divisions will march to Nago as fast as possible. A third division will remain to swap in to Nago if needed. The B-29 groups have been re-targeted there, but the Avengers will target Amami Oshima.

Most of the Amami Oshima invasion convoys are at Tokunoshima and the last is just behind, although the supply convoy is a day and a half back. All the convoys at Tokunoshima are spotted, so rather than wait, the invasion will go in tomorrow. All fleet carrier TFs will move to a position 1 hex SE of Amami Oshima while all CVE TF move to that island itself. Surface combat TFs will include the fast battleships, all cruiser TFs, and several destroyer TFs. This will be the Empire's best chance yet to dash in and get some loaded transports, so we will do all we can to stop them. The old battleships will bombard, 3 tonight and 2 tomorrow night, alternating in that fashion. The two CVE TF that have remained on station will have to retire soon to replenish. Amami Oshima is the last of the Okinawa operation targets that will not require a landing shock attack, but it is Woods-Rough terrain and so might be very tough.

A number of enemy air transports were shot down by the Corsairs based at Naha with an ordered range limit of 2 hexes. If that was obeyed then the transports had to be flying into Nago, as the other two islands within range do not have completed runways. We have moved a 5th Corsair squadron into Naha, and an NZ PV-1 Ventura squadron to take up close in ASW patrol. Naha is now fully repaired (but FIRES = 4 still burning!) - a day early due to the base forces unloading in good time - and 25% toward size 5 airfield. OK, you see the map. Canton and Hong Kong are the current objectives. Liuchow is being taken by a separate force, which will then move any IJ units off the road so a good supply & transit route exists to Wuchow/Canton/Hong Kong.

Canton and Hong Kong will take a bit in game time, but hopefully by the new year our troops will be crossing into Hong Kong. After that, they will move along and just inland from the coast (following the best roads). Perhaps about or shortly after the new year the invasion of Formosa will go in, which will secure the sea lanes in that area plus provide large bases to support amphibious operations along the China coast.

Separately, Hokkaido probably about mid-February. That will provide size 9 airfields for B-29 operations that can reach the entire Home Islands within normal range, plus other 4EB will be able to reach the northern industries.

With Okinawa by then providing 4EB bases for operations against southern industries, plus one base (Naha) large enough for B-29 operations, we will be able to start serious preparations for invading the Home Islands. Formosa also might operate B-29 depending on timing of airfield development.

With Liuchow we got 25x Light Industry, 100x Resources, and 40 tons daily supply. Garrison requirement is 60 AV. Our forces here will split to envelope Kweilin and clear the road to Wuchow. Strong formations will head NE directly in pursuit of the ex-defenders. Others will head east to push Imperials there off the road and into Kweilin (a direction at least one of the two units is taking already). From there, some will proceed along the road to ensure it is clear for support units to move to Wuchow, while others head around Kweilin to cut the rail/road line to the Changsha area. Some units will remain at Liuchow for a while to recoup.

In the mountains, our troops NE of Tsuyung have gathered enough supply to attack again. East of Kunming too, but with the success of the force to their SE they will wait 4 days for retreat along the primary road to be blocked. East of Mengtze there will be a small attack off the road. The 2EB will stand down to train replacement pilots.

On Malaya an armoured car unit will take possession of Malacca tomorrow just as the main armour column arrives on the coast road. Over on Sumatra the USA 147th Rgt will secure Lahat.

The San Jose invasion is beginning to load at Jesselton. Part of the NZ 14th Bde will load on an APD convoy, then the rest will load on a landing ship/landing craft convoy (which was not quite big enough for all the troops). They will be covered by Burke with about 10 destroyers, by LBA, and by CVL Langley, fresh back from repairs. The air threat in the Philippines is greatly diminished with our drive toward Canton and our aerial victories there. I think DAW HQ might be almost writing off the Philippines, at least as far as the possibility of active, aggressive defense. Certainly Imperial air assets are needed to oppose any Allied expansion out of Okinawa as that threatens to isolate the Home Islands.

At least with the last large raid the score was somewhat salvaged by destroying all or almost all the remaining hulls. Nagasaki/Sasebo shows 196 fighters, 160 bombers, and 158 auxiliary types. There must be an air show.

Movement from Naha to Nago is slow. The 8 tank Bns and 2 artillery Bns made 8 miles, the infantry divisions made 11 miles, so it will be almost a week overall. Another day with nearly 20 transport aircraft shot down over Nago. Lots of supply is inbound to Naha spread out over three different convoys that will arrive several days apart.
