Hi, OK the French and allies are almost done. Should have something playable in a week or so.

West Front

Post by MB00 »

On Cogburn's rant above: I really don't understand why the east front gets all the attention (apart from Normandy). The possibilities for the West Front are *much* more interesting, IMO. Even with all its many faults, WF remains an excellent game - you get kind of a "beginning/middle/end", versus the East Front, which is more "beginning/long drawn out end".

While never having played West Front nor East front against a human opponent, my perception is that West Front is of the original WarGame variety - Shovel the units forward en masse...ala Terrible Swift Sword...to little real gain.

At one time in the distant past, i tried playing Decision Normandy?(corp level) while taking battles at less than 3:1 to an operational level game called Panzer (something). The logistics of trying to keep track of partial losses was a bummer.(via paper-pre micro).

Gary Grigsby achieved incorporating partial losses into the game!

I suggest that most gamers are more interested in the East than West...as there was much more opportunity for maneuver and surprise...with large # of troops. North Africa had similar situation...but was determined by immediate supply and with much less # of troops. West Front -under Monty, was more of a slug fest than maneuver and surprises.

Likewise, a partial German Russia game pre-supposes the allocation of resources to other parts of the German-Russia conflict. Hence, the scope of Gary Grigsby is inclusive, with even some opportunity to impact France and Italy.

This Forum has enlivened my interest in WIR as a human to human game opportunity. I look forward to my first opponent for a full 41 campaign. I will compare the experience to my weekend face to face
"World in Flames" forum that has been ongoing now for perhaps 10 years during which about 5 games have been completed...to the satisfaction of a winner.

My argument wasn't about whether WF was more interesting as a *game*, but rather the importance of the Western Front as far as how the real war went. WF, the game, may be more interesting, I don't know, I've never finished a full game of it, but historically the Western Front was secondary for the Germans until the Bulge. The majority of the German army was in the East, which leads to the realization that
what happens in the East has a far greater impact on the West than vice versa.

Mogami must have inhaled some of his own vapor:D

I found the WF editor, it's quite good, but you can't print out an entire list like Rich Dionne's editors - What about it Rich???
Still playing PacWar (but no so much anymore)...

Ranger,

If only I didn't have a real job

A WF editor is just another item on the list of things I'd like to do, but can never seem to get to... (War in the Pacific and Uncommon Valor have been keeping me real busy these days)

Rich

I don't know if you've tried my editor, but with it you can redirect the output to a file (using DOS >), although you need to do it blind since _all_ output goes to the file then.

Mika,

I've tried your editor for Pacwar; it's excellent! I haven't tried the WF version yet.

Rich
