I'm playing EOS and given that the Japanese only have 270 front-line fighters ( A6M2s and Oscar Is) at the beginning of the war ( not including those on KB) the numbers you are asking for are really excessive. Sure Britain could be stronger but the Japanese have problems too. They don't have sufficient fighters to take on more than 1 theatre at a time. If that theatre is Oz or Australia or the Pacific then that theatre will be destroyed and India spared. If that theatre is India then the RAF in India will suffer massive loss BUT all the other theatres will grow stronger.

Sorry while I agree with most of what you say about giving the Allies new ships to play with and CVs much earlier I don't think it is fair to give them an extra 2 BBs, 1 CVL, 4 CVs/CVLs over a year earlier, four Fiji class CLs and a dozen Tribal DDs PLUS these massive increases in planes. I think you need to make a choice. What are you prepared to give up in order to get the fighters you say you need? If I acceded to all these requests India would be able to fight off Japan all be itself and that isn't reasonable either.

The whole reason the Sir Robin defence is such a flawed concept is that it allows Japan to mass forces along one axis. If you fight everywhere then Japan won't be able to concentrate enough to knock India out of the war.

Still, I'm sure something more limited could be worked out... something along the lines of 2 x 48 plane Spitfire groups which would have to be shipped in no sooner than 2 weeks after an invasion convoy was spotted. That would give 100 extra Spitfires which is a massive boost given the low Japanese front-line fighter numbers... The 2 week delay would be to simulate the time taken to fly them out from Britain, into the Middle East and then crate them up in Aden for transfer to Karachi.

That seems like a reasonable compromise to me.

As to the squad anti-soft values. Well you are comparing normal infantry squads to light infantry squads. The non-light Indian and British infantry squads have significantly higher firepowers than the light. Not as high as the commonwealth but close enough.

I guess I am scarred by my experience facing 1,000's of japanese planes in stock in late 42 early 43 where all the R&D factories produce Zeroes and Tonies/Tojos incredibly quickly

Its all a matter of opinion I guess as I believe India could have fought off the Japanese with relative ease on its own but thats a debate for another time!!!!

I am less fussed seeing some of the pools of obsolete planes re early 42 (RAF cannot upgrade until 5/42 anyway) I am very concerned about late 42 early 43 - remember please that I would not have asked for 6 BB's as I view it as excessive or 4 Essex class ---- 2 was fine but cest la vie

I will be interested to see the mod works out I do feel the allies are going to be in trouble for fighters but thats WITP for you.

I think the 96 is a fair compromise on this point if not used by say 12/42 I think the allies should be free as a one time boost to use them anyway but that would be open to discussion.

I do think the Spit VIII numbers are low at 16 per month

I may have misubderstood the anti soft thing nemo but I am sure that either CW Anti soft is to high for the 44 squad its 29 which is higher than UK or Indian 44 Squads both of which had more Brens than CW squads

ps my impression of RHS numbers Is that it is closer to what was historical than stock I am not disputing that my worry is purely about the to bloody A2A model and its impact on the RAF especially given that it didnt redeploy to defnd an Indian invasion

I suspect theonly way to test my fear that the allies are going to be short is to actually try the mod !!!

Fair. This is a game of grand strategy. 100 fighters here or there won't make a massive difference by late-42.

I do think the Spit VIII numbers are low at 16 per month
Based on your comments I increased them to about 25 per monht, a 50% increase.

Re: anti-soft... Ok, I'll reduce anti-soft for the CW infantry squads.

P.s. Torpedo-carrying Beauforts are in from may 42. Range with torpedo is 8 hexes.

I am running an EOS AI v AI game at home while I am at work I want to see the mid 42 upgrade paths and options.

I dont mind the RAF being out of planes in early 42 they cannot upgrade anyway
Late 42 they should be restricted as well but perhaps not as spread out as they are pool densities will be a problem with the over bloody A2A model.
43 airframes should not be the issue but will be if I am reading replacements correctly.

It appears that the Corsair I is not an upgrade option for FAA fighters is that correct ?

My initial thoughts having seen the game in Feb 42 is that Spit VIII and Hurricane IIc are going to be an issue

I suspect the answer is easy Set the Spit VB at 17 production rather than replacement and allow it to upgrade the Spit VIII that way in 43 you get 25 eplacement and 17 production via upgrade totalt 42 per month but the Spit VB stops

Equally do the same with Hurricane I if it is set to production in Aden rather than Replacement the 26 Hurrican I's will upgrade to Hurricane IIc's giving 52 IIc's and 0 mk I's in 7/42

That way the RAF gets some pool density in its main types Hurricane IIc gets 52 as of late 42 and Spit VIII gets 42 as of Mid 43 but with no Hutrricane I's and VB's getting produced.

I created a huge post them lost it.

to sum up my main issue is now that you have added 4 Essex class 4 US BB's 2 RN BB's and accelerated 5 RN CV/CVL's plus Cruisers and Destroyers

Added 1 US Para Div, 1 US Army Div, 1 US Armoured Div, 1 British Semi Armoured Div and converted 3 Light Scale Chindit Bdes bck to a normal TOE 70th UK Div

Increased Spit production (I would still prefer it to be production that upgrades so you end up with 52 Hurri 2c in late 42 (but no Hurricane I's) and 42 Spit VIII's (but Spit VB's dissapear) in mid 43 but thats a debate for another time), created a limited P51B run and brought foreward Thud 2.

Removed the early research factories from the Japanese

In return

My understanding of Jap adds is 1 Para Div, Me 264 strat and torp bomber, Me 109 Fighter, Ki 44 heavy fighter, Various Ju 88 variations including FB and ASW and advanced the Shinden

I assume there are some warship changes as well but I dont know what was in base EOS or if you have added to it for the Japanese I would hope you have at least changed CL's to a more usefull config and built in more DD's plus made Shinano a real CV ?

My initial thoughts is that it is to much for the allies and to top heavy UNLESS I am missing something from the Jap list of toys.

i.e I dont think 4 Essex and 6 BB's is fair make it 2 Essex and 2 BB's (1 x RN 1 x Iowa)

I think the mod needs more Jap toys and doesnt need to neuter the Allies as much in 42

I've added the 51st Division to late 43. I left the Chindit divisions in. So Britain gets an extra division.

I also can see your point re: the Hurricane I/ II etc so instead of increasing the Hurri I replacement rate by 9 I added 9 Hurri Is to production at Aden. This way the later versions of Hurris should get the extra 9 planes also.

Japanese variants...
Well In the end I ripped out the torpedo bomber Me-264 variant and went with just giving the Japanese an Me-264 with HS-293s - which were available at the time and which Japan knew about from technology exchanges with the Germans. The original Me-109, Me-264, Ki-44 III are all rom the original RHS EOS. I looked at the Ju-88 ASW variant and figured it wasn't appropriate to include a 4th ASW plane even if I think it would be better at the job than another Kate variant.

I've also removed most of the early R&D that goes on for the Japanese AND I've removed a lot of the auto-upgrading. This should do a lot to prevent the Japanese building up production of 100s of late-war fighters per month by virtue of auto-upgrade. I the Japanese do well then they should have the supply to upgrade at full cost. If they do less well then they won't have the supplies to upgrade and they'll have fewer of the better fighters as time goes on. Thus this mod should allow Japanese production to reflect how well they were doing better than most other mods ( which is something I want to model).

E.g. Ki-43 I auto-upgrades to Ki-43 II since it is a change from one variant to the other but the later auto-upgrade of Ki-43 II to Ki-61 etc etc doesn't happen.

LCU changes... I've added three Japanese armour divisions in 43 to simulate a Japanese army which realises it is going to have to take on the Soviet Union at some stage. They appear in Manchuria. At that stage they are far too late to invade India or Australia or achieve anything decisive in China so I think this is a reasonable addition. To get the benefit the Japanese player has to have a lot of armour points in his pool so, again, it rewards a Japanese player who is doing well and doesn't do all that much if he is doing poorly.

Warship changes. I gave the Japanese the option of building a 2nd Shinano class BB and 2 Taihos and 2 Unryus. None of these ships will be available before late 44 and I don't think Japan has the capacity or industrial base to actually build them -  a really good Japanese player may be able to get the  2 Unryus but that's about it IMO. Still, I believe in giving people choice. I also added 1 Agano class CL. That's it. The extra Allied heavy ships are designed to counter the addition of the Me-264 and G7M by RHS EOS. I believe these will cause some losses and want the Allies to be able to replace the losses caused + interest.

I've also moved the Ki-44 III forward to enter service at the same time as the Corsair. I am assuming its production was accelerated when the P51B1 enters service and then gets ramped up nother notch as the Corsair begins getting tested. J7W1 gets accelerated by about 4 or 5 months... By February 45 the Japanese are in dire straits anyway so giving them a good interceptor seems, to me, to just keep things interesting without crippling the matchup.

As far as the 1942 fighters. I honestly don't see what you are so worried about. You are getting triple the trained pilots as in RHS. I've also increased their experience so they'll be able to fight well. You are getting over 120 front-line fighters in JUST the British theatre by March 42 as well. So long as you keep the pressure on elsewhere so Japan can't concentrate all its might on India I'd say the RAF has a good chance. If you can't keep the pressure up elsewhere and Japan can concentrate all its might in a lightning campaign then, yeah, the forces in India will be in trouble but I think that's realistic.

Also I think that for balance sake it is fair to keep the Allies a bit weak in 42 since they get so much stronger than was the case at the beginning of 43.

As to the balance... well I think that strategic bombing + better interceptors will give the Japanese a chance to really hurt the Allied ability to prep invasions and I think that with a good building programme of Bettys the increased pilot pool will allow assaults which overwhelm Allied CAP. So I think the Allies will need the extra ships.

I'm open for a game of this as the Japanese. If I'm wrong then come 1943 Japan will speedily collapse and I'll have to re-adjust the mod ;).

I think if you are thinking that, perhaps, the Allies are strengthened too greatly then that's good. I'm not looking to create a mod which cripples one side at the expense of the other. I am trying to create something which gives the Japanese a lot of fun stuff to play around with BUT which gives the Allies anything they could reasonably request also.

Hence P-51B1s in late 42, Corsairs on Carriers from January 43, about 5 or 6 extra divisions, 4 CVs, 8 BBs, 4 CLs, 1 DDs. In numerical terms the Allies get more extra stuff than the Japanese. What the Japanese get is less additional stuff BUT, importantly, new aircraft with new capabilities which should give them a qualitative edge with which to fight off the extra quantity.

P.s. Forgot one thing.. I also swapped the Japanese transport subs out for Ro class attack subs and added in 4 more floatplane transport daitai. I figure that in this game Japan would want combat ability more than the ability to feet starving troops who are no longer contributing to the war effort and that they can be better resupplied and/or evacuated by floatplane transports anyways.

Other thoughts... Someone said something about the British having Hurricanes crated on the docks of Singapore on december 7th. While there wouldn't be any replacements for these Hurricanes I am open to having them available. Does anyone have some hard info on this? Their implementation would take the form of bringing in a couple of the early Hurricane squadrons at the beginning of the game..> IOW shuffling the arrival times as opposed to giving the British new squadrons- the reason for this is that I'm told the RAF is over-represented in later years with many squadrons being duplicated.

It was me. I've seen it on TV a couple of times. They even showed filmed of a crate being opened, but with the way TV shows use and re-use file footage that bit of testimony is unreliable. The footage did look similar to other footage in the show that was definitely of the Singapore campaign. The presence of the Hurricanes - with no effort to prepare them - was cited as one example of the lax attitude and lack of preparation on the part of the command. I believe they said the aircraft were there to upgrade one or more squadrons (not for new squadrons).

I'm sorry but I cannot direct you to any written references.

Mike,
Ok, wasn't aware of that. I'm not an expert on Allied carrier-based fighters ;). I figured that since it wasn't used on carriers it couldn't have been designed for them. Guess I was wrong.

The deal with the Corsair's delay in being used on carriers is illustrated by it's nickname: The Ensign Eliminator. The whole problem was developing the techniques to consistently land it safely on board carriers. The plane itself (AFAIK) was fine.

BTW, Sid does have some later models in carrier-capable slots. He also said that there are both non-carrier and carrier-capable slots available, although I have no idea what is what.

Suggest you check on the SB2C Helldiver. Someone posted a query to Sid about it being in RHS with a 500lb bomb (instead of 1,000lb) and he basically said that's correct. That has to be wrong - I cannot see the USN downgrading from 1,000lb to 500lb bombs when they upgraded their front-line dive bombers from Dauntlesses to Helldivers.

I believe the "Helldiver" was designed to carry and use a 2000 lb bomb (one of the reasons it was such a "beast" to fly).

Nemo I really do think you have overdone it on allied BB's and Essex class I think it will seriously unbalance the mod in 43 - honestly take out 4 or 5 of the BB's and 2 or 3 of the Essex's if you dont its a no win situation for the Japanese and thats not a contest !!!

I would really recommend that you give the Japanese a selection of good quality CL's and DD's lfrom mid war to late war to give them options look at how PZB is hurting me with his surface forces he is driving me nuts and thats with old decrepit pieces of Junk !!!! A selection of good CL's and DD's as raiders are a great alternative to investing in large vulnerable ships - give the Japanese player the option to build them in preference to BB's or CV's this would be good ---- give them the choice especially as I think this mod would go to 46. (also dont forget additional Jap Long Lance PT type boats !!!

Re Fighters in India what do you class as front line ?

Hurricane I's will be 26 per month (or 35 per if I have understood your ealrier post)
Spit VB's will be 17 per month (or 26 per if I have understood earlier porst)

Kittyhawks are not in the upgrade path for RAF planes so thats it isnt it ?
Later in 42 Hurricane IIc's will add 26 per month to the Hurricane pool.

Fulmers/Beaufighters etc are not really fighters so the allies are getting 43 - 61 front line fighters in early 42 which is probably not far off (I am not arguing for more in early 42 !!!) late 42 they rise to 69 - 87 again not arguing to much I just as the allies would prefer that all the fighters being produced are the latest models so the Hurricane I's upgrade production to the IIc. I am still going to try this mod in any event but unless I have missed something that doesnt feel out of line I would like the kittyhawk to be in the RAF upgrade path so I have a choice where to deploy them between Aus/Canada/NZ and India but I will live with it if you have decided not to.

p.s. I would also set Aden to have the Hurricane IV sqn with 30 production as these were modified in ME and that way it auto upgrades to Thud production

Highlander. LOL! How about the "McCloud" if we're going to be ueber-cheesy? ;)

There WAS a HMS Highlander IRL - a H-class destroyer originally built for Brazil and bought by Britain - went into service early in 1940 and was used in the Norway campaign.

As for an additional Brit CVL - there were about twenty CVL´s building or ordered at the end of the war that were variously retained, sold to Allied countries, cancelled, or used for other purposes. Maybe HMS Hermes? Ark Royal was building as a CV (Eagle class).

Concerning the Tribals - twelve of them were lost by the end of 1942, mostly in the Med, five even before PH. Britain wouldn't have built additional Tribals, they were simply too cost-ineffective. The RCN had four that were completed postwar in Halifax - Athabaskan, Cayuga, Micmac and Nootka, armed with eight four-inch DP guns. They might have been completed earlier. Alternatively, one could advance the completion of the Battle-class or the Weapon-class DDs - enough of them were in the pipeline on V-J Day.
DON´T PANIC - IT´S ALL JUST ONES AND ZEROES!
