RE: IJN/IJA continue their advance

Post by aztez »

Ok. This is a 4 day update. Quite a lot of action to report.

Game date is 29th of December 1941

Malaya

Mersing

I think I have now somewhat neutralized this enemy airfield. Plus RAF really should start to be low on Buffalo fighters.

Day Air attack on Mersing , at 23,50

Japanese aircraft
C5M Babs x 1
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 19
Ki-21-II Sally x 59

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 8

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-II Sally: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 5 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
13 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 24

IJA troops have now secured the base at Kuala Lumpur. Now I need to wait a turn or for reinforcements before continuing towards Singapore.

DEI

I did secure the base at Sinkawang. Next turn I will land an aviation support unit there too. This should threaten Java and Malaya since there is level 3 size airfield present.

South Pacific

Lae

The initial assault on Lae was unsuccesfull and thus I paid the price next turn.

These beast flew from Port Moresby.

Day Air attack on TF, near Lae at 56,90

Allied aircraft
Wirraway x 11
A-24 Dauntless x 32

Allied aircraft losses
A-24 Dauntless: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
AP Yamafuku Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire
AP Tatsujin Maru
AP Sanpuku Maru, Bomb hits 1
AP Kyuma Maru
AP Kidokawa Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Kenbu Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Lae at 56,90

Allied aircraft
Wirraway x 9
A-24 Dauntless x 13

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Sasago Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
AP Shinwa Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Kenbu Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Shinkoku Maru, on fire, heavy damage
AP Otake Maru

Damn. Í should have seen this coming! [:-][8|] ...the good news is that most of these ships are ok.

China

Hong Kong

Enemy troops surrendered here. That was about time and now I can reinforce Canton just in case Chuck has any bright ideas about capturing the place.

Ground combat at Hong Kong

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 44771 troops, 205 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 833

Defending force 15480 troops, 74 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 286

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese max assault: 819 - adjusted assault: 934

Allied max defense: 294 - adjusted defense: 265

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Hong Kong base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
299 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Allied ground losses:
15323 casualties reported
Guns lost 52

Philippines

Baguio

As expected heavy fighting started on this mountain region. (Mountain bonus + river crossing)

Well, it could have been much worse for me.

Ground combat at Baguio

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 105383 troops, 492 guns, 270 vehicles, Assault Value = 2332

Defending force 24388 troops, 178 guns, 80 vehicles, Assault Value = 676

Japanese max assault: 1684 - adjusted assault: 644

Allied max defense: 670 - adjusted defense: 460

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
3270 casualties reported
Guns lost 41
Vehicles lost 12

Allied ground losses:
1354 casualties reported
Guns lost 35
Vehicles lost 5

I'am resting next turn unless the AI forces another shock assault which I hope not.

Other news

KB is now nearing Truk from where it will refit itself before joining into action again. I might conduct an raid on Port Moresby/New Caledonia or Southern Pacific convoy routers. I haven't made up my mind.

I did ask about Russia in our last email. I proposed the following: (We never discussed this before)

I think Russian deployment issues are fixed in CHS so ground units are ok.

I will activate a Russia before I launch airstrikes so you can set your fighters on somekind of an CAP. Is 50% ok? …but bombers must stay on standby/training orders until the first air to air blood has been drawn.

One thing I’am worried about is US 4E bombers. I propose that these cannot be deployed there since US forces are “busy” elsewhere. (That I can guarantee) However you could transfer 6 squadrons of allied fighters though to provide aircover.

I dunno whether these are reasonable but at least it would serve somewhat historical setup. IF Chuck agrees that in 90% certainty we will see action in Russia maybe even before summer of 1942.

As for my other other intesion elsewhere. Well, I have been thinking about last turn and come to conclusion that Port Moresby needs to be seized ASAP.

The only way to do this would to send South Sea Detachment along with some smaller ground units there from Rabaul/Truk. Would these be adequate capturing the place??? Tips/Thoughts appreciated. (I doubt he has had the chance of reinforcing the place yet)

KB will naturally provide cover for the Port Moresby operation.

That damn base can really be of an annoyance once he gets an chance to build it up. [:(]

There are some LCU's attached to 'Australia Command', those are free to move and when he began moving them early and into the right place you might be surprised.
If I remember correctly its that independent comany thingy (splitted into 4 subunits, one of them prolly still next to Rabaul on that long snady beach plus a bde in Darwin).

On the other hand nothing some recon flights (from Lae?) wouldn't reveal, right? ;)
If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

If Soviet is not active, no Japanese AC can attack Soviet base or unit, so no need for Soviet CAP.

That means that if you don't activate Soviet before the invasion, your first day of invasion will be without air support.

True. Only thing is that I need capture the Lae first! [:D][:D] This operation has been sort of an blunder from the beginning.

Hmmm. Basically he could muster around 200 assault maxium than. (I actually spotted CA Australia near Mili few days back so he might be using fast convoys)

Chuck did a nasty suprise last turn with those divebombers. [:-] ...that is why I want to step up this operation.

We propably will have more intel next turn. I ordered an airstrike againts Port Moresby from Rabaul so lets see the results.

It has been fun being Japan. Only the economy troubles me "a bit".

First oil convoy is loading at Brunei and will be heading to Tokyo soon. Onboard some 20 000 units of Oil! [:)]

Oh. I didn't know this. [8|]

Never played with Russian nor againts Russians. That settles that than.

...and if Chuck agrees the other points than I start readying myself into this operation. I might use some of the aircraft squadrons from Home Islands with this operation.

Now only thing I need is the turn back from Chuck! [:D]

Russia houserule proposal

Post by aztez »

We have been discussing the Russian dimension in our game.

Chuck proposed that the following and the more I think the more I kind of like it. [:D] *feeling suicidal I guess*

* Allied can base US fighters and bombers in Russia BUT ONLY IF there is an US Base Force unit present. Those units need to be shipped into Russia via convoys so that would mean that Northern Pacific could become somewhat nasty. Basically he would need to fight his way to Russia this way.

* Those US Fighters/Bombers could only be used on those bases where the base force unit is located.

* Russia needs to be activated 5 turns before the initial assault so he could mildly organize his ground troops.

Intresting ideas! [:)]

Here is what I proposed in addition to above rules:

IF allied base US bombers there than there needs to be adequate amount of US Fighter coverage with them. (Meaning that you can’t just move in bombers without fighters).

NO US nor any other allied combat troops can be shipped into Russia. Just supporting units. (Base forces and HQ)

Maxium CAP for Soviet fighters after 5 turn warning would be 60%. Bombers etc needs to be on standby mode. After all this operation is kind of an suprise assault.

I think we might find this agreed.. [:D]

Thus it will mean that Russia will be under assault sooner than later. Hell If I blunder this than so be it but it might be a lot of fun trying to neutralize the Russians and it is kind of an waste to have 9000 assault points doing nothing.

I have already deployed Kwantung Army into 3 separate sectors for assault. Now only thing I need is enough bombers and fighters to pulverize the Russian airfields.

Also I need to have couple of invasion TF so I can neutralize Russian bases outside the mainland.

No screenshots from this turn. I messed up the process when running the turn! [8|][:(]

We have agreed on the houserules regardin Russia!

1) 5 turn activation warning before the offensive begins.
2) Russian fighters can be set on Maxium of 60% CAP. Bombers stay on standby orders.
3) IF Allied fighters or bombers are to be based on Russia than Chuck needs to transport these units via ship convoys. He also must around 50% of planes as fighters.
4) Those base units must be set on no replacement IF they arrive and only can be turned on once the a supply convoy reaches their base.
5) Chuck can bring in some AA, Engineers and even RCT units to support these. (No US Divisions though until he is coming for an invasion)

That is basically it. Houserules are now agreed and I feel these are reasonable enough.

Game date is 2nd of January 1942

It would have been nice to see these allied units retreat. Well, tough luck so to speak.

Next turn an ground bombardment and than we assault again. I have 2 tank regiments and quite a few engineer units in reserve ready for Clark Field and Manila.

South Pacific

Port Moresby

Allied fast transport convoy was definately spotted at Port Moresby. CA's and some DD's seem to be there. My intel reports some 4500 men garrisoning the base.

The KB have now refueled and will head into area. I don't have full squadrons at my disposal yet but I think KB is at 90% strenght.

Other News

Lae was not captured yet. I have ordered an airstrike in order to force this base capture.

In Malaya I'am continuing to march towards Johore Baru. At the moment I'am resting my airforce to be ready for the decisive battle at Singapore.

At Borneo I'am preparing my airfields on massive strikes againts Java and surrounding bases. This operation will begin before the actual invasion of DEI.

At Home Islands I increased the productions of Oscars and Betty's slighty. I'am lacking these planes and need to upgrade my Nate squadrons before Russian adventure.

I got the Witp Decoder to run after some initial issues with the program.

What an awesome tool to have [&o]... saves a lot of time and that is 100% good thing when you have 2 young daughters around. [:)]

The program already made me alarm of my resource and oil capacity.... also noticed that I propably will need more HI too.

...and top of that it seems that my naval yards needs an expansion if I'am to keep afloat.

Many things to consider.

I checked the reinforcement arrivals regarding ground units and due to get quite a lot of Naval Guard units in 13 days. Excellent news and bad news for Ctangus.

To briefly recap of what is going on regarding objectives:

* Grab a decisive victories at Malaya and Singapore before mid February 1942.
* Start large airraids againts Java from Borneo in January 1942.
* Secure my holding at South Pacific at the latest of April 1942.
* Enter war with Russia before summer of 1942. (If I can keep my economy together and build up needed aircraft)
* Capture DEI in March of 1942.
* Consolidate Burma/India front before June of 1942.
* If practical seek out US CV's and destroy them soon as possible.
* Start a moderate offensive campaign in China ASAP.

That is a raw sketch of big timetable. Things will propably change due to war results but you need to have some goals in mind.

The biggest setback and dilemma will be the economy side of things.

Japanese Economy numbers. Couple of questions.

Post by aztez »

Here is the current situation with Japanese economy according to Witp Decoder program.

Couple of questions.

a) Anything I should be worrying about already?

b) It shows Nakajima and Mitsubishi production numbers. Those numbers are lower than my factories are set to produce? Doesn't the oil/resources travel from Tokyo to bases where it is needed?

Thanks in advance.
