Brooklyn, Thursday June 26. A single game with the Braves. Ted Williams gets the day off.

Niggeling vs Manny Salvo. The wind is blowing out to LF at 20 mph, so some fireworks can be expected today.

Sure enough, Billy Cox hits a solo HR (his first of the year) to CF in the bottom of the 1st. Musial adds an RBI single. 2-0, Dodgers.

Boston tied it in the 4th, and took a 5-2 lead in the 5th. We came right back and took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the 5th.

Salvo ran out of bullets in the 5th, but the Braves tie it up again in the 6th. Tom Earley takes the mound for Boston.

Bottom of the 7th. Al Javery now pitching for Boston. Jimmy Wasdell hits a pinch-hit RBI double off him. 8-7, Brooklyn.

8th Inning. Dizzy Trout makes his first appearance as a Dodger, entering in relief of Niggeling.

The final is 8-7. Niggeling wins, Al Javery loses, and Trout earns a save.

We have Friday off, and will travel up to Boston for the next two against the Braves.

Team note: RP Earl Johnson is released from the DL, and will return to the major league roster. Bob Chipman is being sent back down to AAA.

I agree with your choice. Reiser was great in my first real player league. For some reasom the Dodgers computer AI didn't like Reiser. It kept sending Pete down to the minors, even though his play was excellent. My Browns offered a trade for Reiser and the Dodgers said yes. I couldn't stop smiling as I added Reiser to my starting line up.

Tuesday, July 1. Niggeling vs Lee Grissom. The wind is blowing out to RF at 20 mph in Ebbets today. It could be a tough day for the pitchers.

1st Inning. Joe Marty hits a solo HR. 1-0, Phillies. Nick Etten hits another one. 2-0.

Niggeling gets himself into trouble. He gives up 4 runs in the 2nd. 6-0, Phillies. We score one in the bottom of the 6th. 6-1.

Bottom of the 5th. Grissom loads up the bases, and walks in two runs. 6-3. Williams doubles, and its 6-5.

6th Inning. Heintzelman relieves Niggeling.

Philly scores one in the 8th. 7-5. Grissom hangs on to get the CG win.

In the meantime, the Pirates have lost 5 straight, so they now trail the Dodgers by 4.5 games.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, July 2. Trout vs Ike Pearson.

1st Inning. Williams hits a 2-out RBI single. The Phillies tie it in the 2nd. We respond with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. 4-1, Brooklyn.

We make it 5-1 in the 3rd. The Phils score one in the 4th. 5-2.

The Dodgers make it 6-2 in the bottom of the 4th with a solo HR by Reiser. Trout gives up 2 runs in the 5th. 6-4.

Fitzsimmons relieves Trout in the 6th. Fitz gives up 2 runs, and we're tied at 6.

Bottom of the 6th. Cy Blanton relieves Pearson. Lefty Hoerst takes the mound in the 7th.

At the end of 9, it remains 6-6. We go into extra innings.

The Phillies take a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th. Rube Melton takes over on the mound.

Bottom of the 10th. The Dodgers tie it up, and Melton loads the bases with no outs. Tommy Hughes comes in. It's a foregone conclusion -- Reese knocks in the winning run.

We win it, 8-7. Fitzsimmons earns the victory, and Melton takes the loss.

After the game, we were contacted by the Yankees' GM. They wanted Kirby Higbe. I turned him down, but proposed a counteroffer, which was accepted. So, 30-year-old OF Joe Medwick is dealt to NY in exchange for 25-year-old 1B Johnny Sturm. Sturm provides a needed backup to Dolph Camilli.

We have Thursday off.

Stat note: Pete Reiser leads the majors with 35 stolen bases. Behind him is the Senators' Mickey Vernon, who has 14.

Monday, July 14. Higbe vs Vern Olsen. A warm day at Ebbets. 82 degrees.

(Manager note: my pitching staff is worn out. Higbe is at 76% effectiveness, and I have just one fully-rested reliever.)

Ted Williams hits a 2-run homer in the 1st. That's his 18th of the season.

The Cubs score a run in the 2nd. 2-1.

Higbe is struggling. He walks in a run in the 3rd. 2-2. I can see him cursing under his breath. I need him to stay out there as long as he can.

7th Inning. 2 outs, bases loaded. Billy Cox singles -- 2 runs score. 4-2. Olsen exits, Erickson comes in. Reiser singles, and it's 5-2.

8th Inning. Decision time. Who to relieve Higbe? I pick Wittig. Defensive subs also come in: Lavagetto at 3B, Johnny Sturm at 1B. The Cubs go down in order.

Bottom of the 8th. Musial hits his 1st HR of the year, and it's 6-2.

We hold on to win it, and Higbe is now 14-4, with a 2.61 ERA. Wittig faced the tying run and earns his 4th save. Olsen (6-7, 4.28) takes the loss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, July 15. Freddie Fitzsimmons vs Russ Meers. Camilli gets a day off. Sturm plays 1B.

1st Inning. Fitz loads the bases, but the defense only allows 1 run to score.

The Cubs score again in the 2nd. 2-0.

Bottom of the 2nd. Musial leads off with a triple. Sturm hits a sac fly. 2-1.

3rd Inning. Cavarretta hits a solo HR. 3-1. Hudson hits an RBI single. 4-1.

4th Inning. Fitz falls apart, and allows 3 runs. 7-1.

Casey relieves Fitzsimmons in the 6th. It only gets worse. Casey commits an error and then gives up a double. 8-1.

We come back to score two in the 6th. 8-3.

Bottom of the 8th. A solo HR by Williams. 8-4.

We score another in the 9th, but Meers gets a 8-5 win. Fitzsimmons loses.

In NY, the Giants beat the Pirates 8-7. We still hold a 2.5 game lead over the Bucs.

4 runs score in the 3rd, including a HR by Coaker Triplett. 6-0, Cards.

The Redbirds extend their lead to 8-1 in the 5th.

7th Inning. Lew Riggs hits a pinch-hit solo HR. 8-2.

8th Inning. Once again, Johnny Wittig enters to minimize the damage. He gives up a solo HR to Mize in the 9th. 9-2.

9-2 in the final score.

Davis (5-12, 5.56) ends up with the CG win. Trout ( 6-5, 4.31) is saddled with the loss.

You're like the bugle in a war, KG! A large flag, waving in the smokey air. Whenever I lose motivation to play and report on my Avenge Buckner Association, I read your thread and you inspire me.

KG,
In my League Curt Davis is with the Dodgers (1941) and has pitched great. I had him for two seasons with my Yanks. The Dodgers talked me out of him for "I can't remember who". Any way I got two very strong years from him and he's helped the Dodgers get into three Championships.
I read every thing.

Friday, July 18. Niggeling vs Lon Warneke. Due to a storm in the Atlantic, it's a cool day. 70 degrees, wind blowing in from RF.

Bottom of the 3rd. Reiser drives in a run on a grounder. 1-0.

The Cardinals tie it in the 5th, and take a 2-1 lead in the 6th.

They score two more in the 7th. 4-1.

Bottom of the 8th. Reiser doubles! Williams hits a HR! It's 4-3.

Bottom of the 9th. Sam Nahem comes in to try to save it for Warneke. Mickey Owen triples! Pinch-hitter Jimmy Wasdell flies out. Owen holds. Reese hits deep to center, and Owen dashes for the plate. He's thrown out! The Cardinals win it 4-3.

Warneke wins, Niggeling loses, and Nahem earns the save.

The Pirates beat the Braves, and gain a game. They are one game behind us, and guess who's coming to town?

That's right -- the Bucs next visit Ebbets Field for a three game series. Saturday night's game will no doubt be a sellout.

(Note: guys, thanks for reading. I had NO clue that this kind of drama would be happening. I will play it out tomorrow evening. The first game will be Kirby Higbe (14-4, 2.61) vs Max Butcher (15-5, 4.19) )
