The pace of japanese aggression accelerated again this day.
The Army air force now firmly established in malaya launched 122 Salies, escorted by some 70 zeros and oscars against the airfields at singapore.
British aerial resistance was meager -but the Flak put up by the defences took a heavy toll of the bombers -damaging 37 of them. 14 sallies failed to return.

The majority of the fighters had been pulled back to batavia - from where the allies made a major effort to disrupt the landings at palembang.
Twice during the day flights of up to 20 martins and a number of float planes attacked -the battleships of Capt Takeda drawing most of the attantion
reports of hits were made -but no damage was apparent as the day wore on

Down south japanese NLF troops began to unload at Ambiona -the coastal defence managing to damage several of the DDs and a CL protecting the invasion

But despite all this, palembang fell this day -as did Singkawang, and miri.
Japanese agression and daring had captured the jewel of the DEI totally intact.
Fighters flew in as dusk fell, ready to protect the base the next day
Capt Takeda anchored his 4 BBs, and began to replenish his ammunition from the specially loaded AKs that had followed the invasion into the Harbour.

Lgen Mutagachi, and Lgen Oda stood at the head of the long column -and were having "a planning discussion"

"18th division will not, I repeat not divert ANY of its strength to kuantan!"
"but if 16th division should forge ahead - what of thei intersection -kuantan could cut us off"
Mutaguchi scowls -"as if the british have even the slightest interest in attacking -saving their skins is all they care about.
18th divison will continue south" ---- the pause was very pregnant with meaning' " and 16th division will follow"
"But ...............

Flight log
Lt yamato -98th Bombing sentai

3rd mission - bomb singapore
Full formation, no losses to fighters or Flack
Bombing fair
Suffered severe damage to port arelaion -large calibre hit.
Struggled all the rest of the way.

The flight again had appeared to be a cake walk - 100 plus bombers, masses of escorting navy fighters.
And so it had been until Singapore had been reached -and the Flak had risen around them
The hit had been sudden, violent - and almost fatal.
Flight, the shock, and the instant dragging, dropping of the wing, the sudden panic -the struggle at the controls -and gods be praised, the bare
regaining of control - and no fire.

Tomorrow he would rest - but suddenly bombing Singapore was no longer as attractive as it once was.

Little Hosho was not only a small ship -she was also a fairly old ship -and not very lavishly equiped.
Capt Umeya was beginging to feel a little frustrated, and somewhat concerned.
radio silence was one thing -but where was the KB?
Every day his small flight of kates departed on search- sometimes they would sight the CS ahead of him, or the armoured AP to his south, but nothing else
Was KB even still about?
Where was the allied shipping that must be between Pearl and the USA - -had they been detected somehow?
frustrating
And some what disconcerting.

The hunt for the cripples and refugees continued in the phillipine seas, despite japans best efforts, many of the ships would escape towards Midway -the japanese forced to withdraw the hunting ships, now required for the huge invasion fleet gathering many miles to the east of davao.

Im malaya George town fell quickly, and the troops would pause for the next 2 days as they waited for 15th Army Corp to catch up.

The day was marked by two major air battles -the bulk of the allied fighters and bombers attacking again the ships in palembang Hbr.
The first wave of 39 brewsters, 9 demon escorted 10 martin and 8 TiVa's into the hbr area.
21 oscars opposed them, knocking down 7 brewsters and 2 demon, for 1 loss.
The martins missed, again -but the float planes hit twice - Ise on the fwd turret -causing no damage, but some casualties, the other barely scratching Hyuga's armour plate

The second wave, of similar size -failed to hit, and lost 6 more brewsters. many of the martins were now failing to press the attacks

At manilla, 50 zeros engaged 16 P40e in a big dogfight. The allied pilots paid heavily for failing to adjust to the more nimble zero, 10 being shot down.

Sothern Command Hq -now at sea enroute to Khota Bharu -on this day issued orders for the invasion of the DEI's proper.

Eleswhere japanese troops landed at Ambiona, and the attack at hong kong began, the 4th, 104th and 38th divisions all engaging the defences there.

For private ADO, it was a very good day
After the tension of the bridge crossing several days ago - it was almost pleasing to know that the enemy was there ahead of him there in Georgetown

But looking at the forces travelling down the road past him, he doubted that his recon platoon would see them.
The road was packed, as the 5th Division marched, drove and bicycled past them, almost in peace time formation.
Even a lowly private as Ado could tell that the air raid discipline was terrible -yet it hardly mattered, it had been at least a week since any allied planes had been seen.

No, despite sore feet, and a sore bum, things were good -his bicycle still had not even suffered a flat yet.

And this was a good job too - meet the hard following Imperial Grd division -or the 55th -whichever came first -and guide them to the front -ready to relieve the 5th.

Not that it would really require it.

Capt Takeda took the hits on his BBs very well -after all - the battle wagons were trapped at anchor at the time -and vulnerable.

Neverthelss -the hits had caused some splinter casualties - and demanded a reply
He would remove the threat -and quickly
Batavia - yes - a nice approachable place.
he issued his orders -and 4 heavy cruisers soon departed, as soon as he could raise steam enough -he would follow.
How dare a float plane even attack him like that!

herbiesan - concerned with progress -orders Southern command HQ to
re brief him on forces available in the DEI /malaya/brunie area of operations

After a very , very long look at the forces available, and at what has been committed, and what has not -and the enemies strategy so far, herbiesan concludes the following

Gen Hoepener - newly appointed supreme commander -is definately following a well considered plan of Holding out at singapore -soerabaya.
Therefore little resistance could be expected in the North of sumutra.
So -instead of waiting for the Malaya forces -we would attack now -at merak and batavia -with the handful of SNLF/Naval Guard units in the theatre.
Paras -as soon as available at Palembang -were "to be used creatively"
Bold attacks -covered by the fleet -were the order of the day.

3 major events marked this day
At palembang the allies once again attempted to attack the masses of shipping in the hbr, 20 bombers escorted by nearly 30 fighters
But overnight the japanese had brought 2 daitais of the new zero fighters, and over 30 of them , with some 19 oscars as well
To the bewildered british and dutch pilots, the air seemed thick with zeros.
10 allied fighters went down , and the bombers were turned away.

The second major event was the arrival of the South sea detachment at wake
recon and SS reports had reported allied ships recently at the outpost -and rashly the detachment thought the area evacuated
It had not been.
The subsequent landing was a nightmare -and by dusk -was still an issue very much in doubt. the detachment however -win or lose, was ruined for any further operations for the time being.

The third action was the launching of the assualt proper on Hong kong - the 4th, 104th and 38th divisions, plus a regiment of the 51st, and 2 engineering regiments, quickly began to push the allies into a hopeless position.

In malaya, penang fortress fell quickly, and the advance continued almost in a peace time manner.

finally, in a very bold leap, troops from 4th fleet, began an invasion of ambiona.

From General Hada
Southern area HQ
to
ADM Yammato
Combined Fleet

Greetings
many thanks for the fine and honorable service your fleet units have given my forces during the current southern area operations.

it is now requested as part of our agreement that naval forces be allocated for operations against the Northern sumutra coast
please see attachment for merchant shipping requests.
It is generally intended to gather these forces in the Singkawang area by the 22nd of this month.
As agreed, we require sufficient naval cover, and naval air cover to complete these landings unmolested by no later than Jan 5
Yours

Radm Takagi, commander of the Zuiho task force could not believe his luck
How pleased Capt Takeda would be by these orders -not likely!
he -a lowly carrier commander had just had placed under his command not only his two carriers, but the vast majority of the fleet.
Today he rivalled nagumo himself!
6 battleships, 2 battlecruisers, 10 cruisers, and all the rest.
5 naval bomber squadrons, and fighters as well.

All good.
But nothing better than ordering takeda about.
It was hard to suppress his pleasure as he drafted the order:

To Captain Takeda
From
Radm Takagi

"target batavia...............

And this was the result of Takagi getting one extra mark in the final exam than him.................to be ordered about by that son of a peasant!

Leave not one stone unturned.

He would show him who really should be running this war.

98th bombing sentai
Orders for the day

mass bombing effort
target
singapore
All bombers to be ready to launch as per below schedule
Briefing at 0600

Lt Yamato grimaced
Singapore -again
the sums were brutal it seemed
10% losses per mission equals 10 missions to 100% casualties
This would be mission number 4
Statistically -things were getting grim.
But he would go with courage -his crew needed him.

Under the new flag of Radm Takeda, operations were vigoursly pressed in preparation for the invasion of sumutra
4 heavy cruisers -Kumano, Suzuya, Mikuma, Mogami bombarded Batavia, and Capt Takeda bought his Battleship squadron into range

Shipping gathered of Singkawang, preparing a combat formation for the dangerous run in
Troops landed at Pontiak, clearing the rendevous area of allied air power.
the greatest worry still remained the where abouts of the British fleet, but just after midnight, these were dramatically put to rest.

The Ambiona invasion had been particularily efficient- and the transports had departed at dusk - as the base quickly fell into Japanese hands
celebrations were brutally shut short as 14inch artillery shattered them

Prince of wales had just missed her quarry...........

Japanese bombers bombed Singapore fort facilities this day - hitting 3 AKs . Only 2 were lost this day -although 35 were again damaged.

The issue was decided at wake - the island falling at midday.
It would take 3 days to bury the dead...........

ADM Yammato was pleased

Wake now the empires
This would allow a shorter route for the AOs heading east to support the special operation so deep east.
Still no contacts.............
How long could he keep this op up?

LGen Mori of the Imperial Grds division had a hang over
LGEN Takeuchi - he of the famed 55 div, was a dangerous man - and although the feeble resistance at Georgetown hardly deserved a celebrationary drink -well, he had insisted
And then there was the news -they would continue to lead the assualt -and Yamamoto -had been given the 5th as well!
3 divisions for the man -the man they would folow to the moon if he led them there.
So that called for another drink....
And of course -what would Hasegawa -that leach - think of that!
more drinks.

His head hurt
It was hot -and all this dust -@#$%$# -war was hell

The most significant news of the day was not the naval battle at ambiona -but a simple action some 300 miles east of pearl hbr

SS I-23 suffered minor damage after a horrowing depth charge attack from 4 old 4 staker DDs
Only some 2 hours later could she surface and report her attack.
.............suspect escorting a capital ship, possibly a carrier.

The second naval battle of the war occurred at Ambiona

The POW had retired during the day, during wich the Japanese had sailed in a small task force .
Leaving the port and moving north up the coast, it was surprised by the British task force, and a short, sharp battle ensued.
the japanese lost a single light cruiser -the Yura-allied losses were very light..
Eleswhere The Battleships of Capt Takeda fired on batavia -with little effect, and 15th army took taiping in its march south down the malay peninsula.

His task was simple
Guide the task group into the town, pick up wounded men, and return
A waste of shipping - 5 cruisers, packed with long lance torps -being used as transports -while some where the British battle wagon lurked in these waters.
Stupid
But he had his orders
Now that the mission was almost done, he could relax.
The ships steamed in line ahead -Cl Yura leading, Kitakami, Kiru, and his flag , Oi following - a dd on each flank, forging north -the dark, dark coast to his right, some 10000 yrds away.
It was very, very dark.

The thunder of the battleships guns - the screaming roar of its salvos came as such a shock - freezing for a few moments all thought and action.
" Ships to Stbd!!!! -many ships to Stbd!"
Damn!, Damn them to hell -where to Stbd! - and finally the mind snaps into gear -" FUll Ahead Both! - standby for torpedoe attack!"
"Give me a range to the battleship!"
Yura is burning - tracer -huge tracer slamming into her
no time for her -get the battleship!
"GIVE ME A TARGET!"
But easier said than done - the enemy is masked against the dark coast -and he is lit up by the moon.
The tactical situation is not good
All ships -all guns are firing now, good -and now time seems to slowly return to normal -even as shells rip the seas about them
'Torps?"
" I cannot get a solution sir!"
Bright flare to stbd -sawakaze? getting hit!
'Damn - OK torps -general salvo -this is impossible! we must get out of here!
You give the intolerable order -" All ships, new course -300 -break contact!"
Yura passes down the port side -stoped, and aflame from end to end
Sorry friend
Ois tubes are empty.
10 years of training, doctrine, effort -missed.
