RE: Pilot training

Post by Q-Ball »

ORIGINAL: wild_Willie2

If you want to keep up with the allied airpower mid/late in the war you NEED an active training program.
Especially when you are playing stock, A-A losses through UBERCAP in stock can be crippling for japan within 2-3 major battles, that is why I will never play stock a PBEM game anymore....

In mods (big B-Nik-experimental) using this technique, you can actually keep on IMPROVING the quality of your airgroups until quite late in the war....

It might take an extra 3-4 minutes per 10 or so turns to execute this technique, but it will be more that worth it...

Greets

William

I started my games as Japan using the Mogami method, (which involves disbands of whole units, and the 90 day wait), but lately I have been using fragments. It works better for keeping units on-line. Only issue is that using Mogami does preserve your pilot replacement pool, which I find I need to round out CV units, or need for Glen pilots and whatnot. Using the fragment method, you will deplete your pilot pool very quickly, probably in the first 3 months, and it will never have more than one or two pilots in it. Still probably worth it.

Klablam!!!!!!

Post by dennishe »

It has been a fantastic two days of Christmas (in the game then). I took Kiska island, yenen, Kuantan, Kendari, Medano, Djanganas (or something like that) and Rabaul. My invasion fleet for Palembang will arrive tomorrow. The allies tried to sneak Force Z in to intercept this invasion. It was discovered and destroyed by 56 Nell bombers (didn't upgrade them yet -- I need all my torpedoplane squadrons at full strenght). The Prince of Wales took 4 torpedos and its sinking has been confirmed. The Repulse took 7 torpedos and must be in bad shape. This is great! When a surface fleet with two BB's turn up during an invasion this garantees trouble. With the PoW and Repulse out of the picture the allies do not have any BB's in the area anymore. The Palembang invasion is covered by a big ass surface fleet including several CA's and two BB's. I'm not afraid for the allies if they show up with their CL's without night fighting experience (except for some British vessels perhaps). There was another TF in the hex of Force Z. I'm curious what EdM is going to do now. I can't wait to the next turn.

DEI: I landed at Palembang today. There was no surface combat. The allies didn't go for the intercept. A TF with two British CL's was discovered at Batavia, but my Nells did not get any torpedos in them. The other TF in the west is another surface combat TF that seems to be limping to the west. I think it may be an escort for the Repulse. I will keep my eye on it and hopefully my Nells and Bettys will put another torpedo in it.

Malaya: Georgetown fell today. My troops are now all moving south. I transfered my bombers from Indochina to Kuantan. I know that Khota Baru has a bigger airfield, but I chose Kuantan, because it is somewhat closer to the action. Everything is going according to plan here.

Southwest Pacific: Rabaul has been taken and a huge invasion fleet with 2 divisions on board is underway to PM. It is covered by KB and a surface TF with 4 CA's. A special base force will land at Lae where an AFB will be installed to provide further air cover. No signs of any allied carrier or other TFs here. This could be an easy ride. After PM has been taken, one division will be divided and land at Gili Gili, the Shortlands and at Lunga. I hope to take these places early, before the infantery troops that are asigned tot he southeast fleet become operationable.

First line of defense: I started to install my first line of defense, which will consist of Kiska Island, Wake, Tarawa, Lunga, Port Moresby and Timor. Some of these places haven't been taken yet, but this will follow in due coarse. At Wake I'm already digging in. I have 300 AV there and ML's are underway. I do not want to loose it as a result of an opportunistic move by the allies. I also send a TF with 4 construction units on board to Wake, where it will help to build up fortresses. After Wake these units will move on to Tarawa.
From this "line of defense" I'm not planning any invasions to increase my territory. I'm planning invasions at various locations though to keep the allies occupied and to destroy his carrier fleet before it gets strong. I'm not planning to defend these areas, only to stall the allies as much as possible. I'm not sure about the locations yet.

Another good day for the empire. Palembang fell and is mine. Tomorrow an aviation unit will arrive and I will have my airbase close to Java. Further it was confirmed that the Repulse has sunk. The attack of Java can commence within 2 weaks. I have two divisions, one INF regiment, several engineer units, base forces and one army HQ available. More units are underway and can land at Java roughly one week later.

Palembang:

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 10986 troops, 153 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault value = 246

Defending force 2678 troops, 46 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault value = 39

Japanese max assault: 237 - adjusted assault 182
Allied max defense: 41 - adjusted defense: 27

Japanese assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Palembang base!!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Hurricane II: 13 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
127 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Allied ground losses:
41 casualties reported
Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1

The first month of the war

Post by dennishe »

It is 1/1/1942 now. Time to recapture things and take a look at the production scheme.

Aleoutins: I took Kiska island and Attu. I have no interest in the remainder of the aleoutins. I hold these island to keep the allies far away from the home islands.

Pacific: So far I only took Wake, Nauru, Tarawa and Makin island. I'm currently digging in at Wake and Tarawa. These islands will be part of my first line of defense. There are no further invasions planned until KB is available.

Southwest Pacific: I have taken Rabaul. I have a base force at Lae. A huge invasion fleet with 2 full size divisions on board is underway to PM. It is supported by KB and a surface TF with 4 CA's. After PM, Gili Gili, the Shortlands and Lunga will be targets.

DEI: I took Kuching, Brunei, Palembang, Amboina, Medano and Kendari (+ various small bases). The invasion of Java is in preparation. Parachute attacks will prelude the landing of amongs others 3 full size divisions, one army HQ, several engineering units and various other supporting troops.

Malaya: I took Alor Star, Georgetown, Kuantan and Khota Baru. The allies have 9 units at Singapore and a similar amount at Malacca.

The Philippines: Luzon was completely bypassed. I will let the allies starve here. They have retreated there air force from this island. So far the plan is working OK. I landed at Davao with 2/3 division. I took Batan Isl. and Jolo, where I have large air force bases, from where I controll the skies.

China: There is heavy fighting at Ichang. I took Yenen. I'm planning to cut the Chinese army in two, by taking Ichang and pushing further inland. In the north I'm going for the oil and resources in the very back of the map.

Burma: I cut off the allied troops at Moulmein. Nothing further to report here. This will change in the next months though.

Production system: see chart. I increased the armament production by a lot very recently. I have a bigger chart for myself, where I keep track of the amounts of oil and resources at all important production sites. So far I keep my production limited to what I need. Don't want it to crash. As soon as the resource areas in the DEI are secured I will start to ship in oil and resources. From there I will see to what extend I can savely increase things......

Situation in the southwest pacific

Post by dennishe »

It is 4/1/1942. I just landed the 65th Brigade at Lautern and the 4th and 56th divisions at Port Moresby. It is only defended by the Port Moresby defense brigade and a base force. I should be able to take it quickly. Aircover is provided by KB and an airbase at Lae. One of my ships transporting the 56th division was damaged and since it was about to sink, I diverted it to Gili Gili, to at least put the groundtroops on land safely. This turned out not to be intirely the case, since the Allies brought sparrow force to Gili Gili. I think they were shipped by the TF that I sunk a few days ago. Hopefully, my troops will hold until they are reinforced (I have a NFL underway and the rest of the 56th division available as soon as PM is taken).

Further I spotted Allied ships at Amtchika island in the Aleoutins. These actions were probably triggered by my invasion of Kiska island. I'm not sure if I will have to reinforce Kiska island. I will send at least some submarines to the area to keep an eye on further Allied movement.

1/7/1942: Troops are embarking my ships at Kuching. The invasion of Java is at hand. I have all my transports located at Kuching. My two parachute regiments will prelude the attack. There is an unit located at Kragen. In addition it is far away from my aircover. Merak seems to be the most suitable location to land. Or perhaps Tjilitjap or some other island on the west side of the island. Can I freely move my ships trough the Batavia - Toeloekbetoeng straight, or can I expect fire from the coastal guns at Batavia?

The whole operation will be covered by a huge surface TF and miniKB, that will sneak up on the Allies from the east near Kendari. Hopefully, I can suprise some Allied TFs and sink them.

Your ships will get hit by Batvia guns........Might as well hit Kragen. You will take some losses, but once taken, you can base fighters into it for local CAP.

You can hug the coast of Borneo, it will slow you down some, but it will limit the air attacks.

OK. The the ladingsite for the invasion of Java is set. I deliberately moved my transport planes to Kuching to give me the opportunity to go for Kragen after all. For Merak, Palembang would be a slightly better choice to station my transports, though from Palembang one cannot hit Kragen. My paratroopers will be dropped at Kragen at D-day -1. Hopefully, they will secure the base before my troops land. This will save me a lot of casualties and disruption. Hopefully, there is no full division at Kragen. I hope to find this out before D-day without tipping the Allies off. I have lots of recon planes at Palembang reconning all bases at Java that are within reach.

I would run a bombardment TF using a fast CL and a couple DD's into Kragen the day before and the day your air assault will take place. That way it will disrupt the defenders and hopefully tell you exactly who is defending Kragen. I would bet that Kragen has one of the Dutch regiments there. Para's will not dislodge it. How many units are at Bandeon (the base below Batvia)? If it is only 1, then it is a base force and you have a good chance of taking it and then blocking the troops from Batvia. Also by airlifting major forces in.

You will not be landing in any great strength at max range using para's. I would think about hitting Merak by para's too. You can then airlift a brigade or div from Palembang into the base and make him defend 2 invasion sites at the same time. Using Tabby's, you can lift alot of supply's into Merak in very short order, at least enough to make it impossible to dislodge your force and given enough time, enough to even begin offensive ops from there.

There will definitively be a bombardement attack at Kragen. I'm a bit scared though by doing it a few days ahead with just a CL and some destroyers. I think EdM keeps his capital ships at Soerabaja. If he sees the bombardement coming, I'm screwed. He must be expecting an invasion at Java. He is most likely aware of my armada at Kuching. Kragen is a very good landingssite. That's why he moved his troops there.
I try to avoid surface battles, since this gives him a good shot at damaging or destroying my capital ships. So far I haven't lost any and I want to keep it this way. Perhaps if miniKB is closing in fast enough, I can bomb Soerabaja port some more. My Nell and Betties did not a good job at destroying allied shipping in port.
Indeed, paratroopers are weak, especially since they have to shock attack. I don't want to drop them on an infantry regiment. Perhaps I can use them for a different assignment. Block allied reinforcements for example. First I need to do some more reconning. For now, destination is Kragen. I have a few days to pick the final landingsite.

Well, as long as Boise is not there, you can really pound most of his surface forces. Avoid Boise!!!!

Your CA's are more than a match for just about anything you will run up against.

Why not bombard Batvia with several BB's? You should be relatively safe, if you run them down from Palembang. I would be pounding Batvia non stop.......if for no other reason than to inflict losses on him and shut down a major airfield along your approach. You may find that Batvia is not held that strongly. Of course, with this early date, 2-3 div can push him out of Batvia. Allowing a north to south advance.

I remember from one of my games versus AI, that the coastal guns of Manilla and Batavia are mighty and have to be avoided at all cost. But then I was a total rookie and might have forgotten to turn of the escort to bombard.
I shall give this a look. Haven't received any turns yet....

battle for Java

Post by dennishe »

Since there was only one unit located at Badoeng and there were a lot of planes there, I send in my paratroopers. Their task was to capture the airfield and cut of the garrison of Batavia, from the ladingzones at Kragen. Unfortunately, there appeared to be a lot of flak and most of the transports didn't make it. Putting my Zero's on escort did not help. Transports are not escorted. Forgot about that. Would it be wise to drop my troops from high altitude? Anyway, Badoeng was not taken (yet) and the paratroopers are low on supplies.
Anyway, tomorrow is D-day. Hopefully, the landings at Kragen will be a success and I can relieve my troops at Badoeng in the next weeks.

D-day: My troops landed at Kragen today. It was a big success. Only 3 PT boats showed up, which were sunk. Allied convoys have been observed, fleeing from Soerabaja. The first convoy was intercepted by mini KB and heavily damaged. For now, my troops are still unloading at Kragen. As soon as they received their supplies, they will engage the Dutch regiment. At Badoeng, my paratroopers are in big trouble. The Allies got reinforcements from Tjilitjap.

Switch to dropping supplies at Bandenberg.............He does not have the strength to kick you out, but you need to rest some. The Tabby's will be best for this as they have a huge load capacity. You have 3500 troops there. You have succeded in cutting him off. Now, just hold the line.

Once Kragen is yours, you can move north and south. I would send 2 Div to the south and 1 division north. Object being is to grab a level 4 airfield which will allow you to totally isolate Java.

MiniKB makes a lot of casualties. Further troops in the southeast captured PM, Gili Gili and the Shortlands. The invasion of Lunga is expected within the next days.

RE: battle for Java

Post by dennishe »

D-day+3: Nothing happened. Kragen is mine. Somehow, I forgot to mention that in yesterdays post. My troops are marching to the Java railroad system. Once arrived there, Soerabaja will be cut off from the centre of Java. Priority is to capture a level 3 airfield from which dive bombers will pound Java into the stoneage. For now I have a few sentai Zero's located at Kragen. I haven't seen any response from the Allied air force yet. It seems they have been completely withdrawn from Java. The convoys from Java have changed their exit route in a desperate attempt to avoid running into miniKB. I moved it closer to Java. Nothing will escape via the southern route anymore. There are still some PT boats at Soerabaja. I decided to set one Zero sqaudron on naval attack at 100 feet. They will do the job.

Outer defense parameter: There is heavy fighting at Kupang and Lunga will be captured in a few days. I do not expect to find any troops there (yet). Once these bases have been secured, I have taken all bases that will form my outer defense parameter (Kiska Isl, Wake, Tarawa, Lunga, Port Moresby, Lauteren and Kupang). I started to build up my forts. Currently, I have 4 construction units at Wake, which will quickly increase the fort level to 9. Then they will be transfered to Tarawa. I don't want to Allies to take it in an ambitious attempt to counter. Mining operations at Tarawa and Wake are ongoing. This does not mean that my advances will stop after this. I will advance further, but these areas will not be defended at all costs. Stalling the Allies in an offensive and finishing off the Allied carriers will be the main objective of these phase 2 operations. In addition the Allied pockets within the outer defense perimeter (incl. the Philippines) have to be neutralized. Another priority is to build up a stable front in Burma/India and China.

Mixed emotions

The last round was very strange. My garnison at Kiska island was bombed by American battleships. I hope he is not going to pursue my troops further here. My troops and ships are far away and it will take forever to strike back. I moved 9 Mavis recon planes and 27 Alf floatbombers to Attu island, where also 9 Jakes are located. The Mavis bombers should be able to see the allied bombardement fleet coming and the floatplanes should then strike a naval attack. Hopefully, this will scare him off from further actions.

More bad news! The CL Naka was hit by 5 torpedo's and sunk immediately. From now on my bombardement raids on Java will increase in strenght. I have captured a level 3 airfield and moved a couple of divebombers there.
