indeed
and depending of course on how strong his carrier force is off New Guinea, the other at Canton will be tht much weaker...

there may be an opportunity here to deal KB a serious blow...

Summary

Carrier RV Update:

Halseys 3 carriers are currently 300 miles ESE of Palmyra, heading about SE

Spruances 2 carriers are 180 miles SE of Suva, heading about due east

Spruances carriers are additionally about 1200 miles SW of Canton, with its unknown quantity of zeroes and bombers and patrol planes. while Halseys carriers are 1140 miles from Canton

The 5 carriers are 2340 miles from each other, the equivialent of over halfway across the Atlantic in some places[X(]

or a bit short of the distance from Sanfrancisco to baltimore

Total Estimated Distance: 2821.91 miles

Image

that truly shows you how vast the Pacific is...

in other news...

China: The countermarches continue. there are over 200,000 imperial and chinese troops contesting changsha

India/Burma: the imperial navy forces spotted earlier, have disappeared. their locations and courses are unknown. the attack on miyitrkina is being called off, and the forces marching are turning around, since of course, tiger has already won the race to get there and his troops are nearing

CentPac: the convoy is being reorganised. i have nearly 40000 combat troops prepared(not literally prepared) for the operation they wawai the RV of the carriers...

SoWestPac: 2 convoys have arrived at PM and are unlioading, with 7000 units of supplies already ashore at PM, more is on the way. the imperial carriers are still loitering around NE of New Guina. But PM shall not fall without a fight. however only 8 fighters of 50+ are operational...

SoPac: the 2 carriers that were heading for Noumea must have joined up with the current force loitering off New Guinea, as recon reports at least 4 in the force.
also, at Canton, tigers naval forces have gotten under way, and they are reported as heading west. ive transferred all available catalinas into the area to shadow them. and every boat within about 1000 miles is heading into the area, with about a dozen more already shadowing the force... my guess is theyll head for Kwajalein, so ill try and prepare a lil sumthing for tiger there...

Math... BAH!!!

Post by marky »

19 May 1942
Summary

Bad news first...

SoWestPac: quite a few ships sunk and damaged at PM today. undamaged ships running for OZ. 13000+ supplies have been unloaded. not as much as i wanted, but better than none, and tigers carriers cant hang around forever. just wish i had sum fresh fighter groups to drop there.

SoPac: recon reports that there are 2 CVs and 2 CVLs at Canton, they turned around again. so he has maybe 230 planes? if Halsy and Spruance can hit them from 2 different directions maybe they can be beaten bad enuff. i still want them to link up though. but if he has any nells or patrol planes at Canton, then his search range is significant. the carriers MUST link up. but in terms of preventing this, tiger picked the perfect spot to be able to stash a betty and nell nest. no way Lex and York would survive an engagement with the carriers reported. but all together, they have a chance. thought about having them all head for Frisco but its way too far. itd be easier if i had more oilers.

Summary

SoWestPac: More ships sunk at PM today. 15000 units of supply ashore. all fighters and bombers that can have been evacuated to OZ.

SoPac: tigers carriers are roaming around near canton. whats he doing? is he waiting for me? is he trying to catch convoys that were on their way to and from OZ? Spurance is running low on fuel and hell have to refuel from the oilers soon. wish i had sent the other oilers from OZ with him.

China: countermarches continue

India/Burma: Myitikkina has been reinforces by tiger. as appears lashio as well. so the attacks there have been called off for now. and the troops marching on lashio have been called back to yunan

21 May 1942
Summary

China: same old stufff

India/Burma: air attacks on Myitikina called off to give the air groups some rest. all fighters are on full CAP.

SoPac: the march of the carriers continues. fuel remains a concern but if i can just get them RVd theyll be in better shape, but thats a way off. but at least theres plenty of fuel waiting for them at palmyra. i plan to reinforce Johnston and Palmyra, and wen the opportunity presents itself, Baker, if possible.

SWPac: more planes evacced out of PM today. the base is a mess.

Clash over Kohima

Post by marky »

24 May 1942
Summary

SoWPac: tiger keeps hammering PM. may be neccessary to evacuate completely, since it cant be held with his blockade around it. but thatd be nearly impossible. fighter losses have been severe. while i have the pilots, i dont have the planes. so there would be no meaningful air covrrt over PM if i brought troopships in to get them out. they may have to be sacrificed. tiger also has his boats all over the place, so before they left OZ, hed probably know about it.

SoPac: the carriers are now within map zoom range of each other. should only be a few days before they rendevous. recon says that tigers carriers headed off to the northwest, so itll take them time to catch halsey and spruance. all planes on the carriers have been grounded, except for fighters, theyre at full CAP, and also, the cruier float planes are also sitting snug on their catapults. if tiger has subs around i dont want them being spotted.

once theyve RVd theyll head for Palmyra, and then Pearl.

War Down Under

Post by marky »

28 May 1942
Summary

SoWestPac: Lots happening here now. Namely:

Image

intel/recon says theres a carrier in Rabaul. a glance at the airfield damage at PM reveals about 14. minor. so ive transferred in nearly 100 Hudsons and Flying Forts.... Theyre all on Port attack at 6000. hopefully theyll nail the carrier.

Operation Valkyrie is green-lit

the chance alone is worth the potential slaughter of these bombers. i dont expect the carrier to be sunk, but a few bombs will certainly take her out of the war for a while. with only the 5 carriers in PacFlt, and tiger outnumbering me in carriers about 2-1, any imperial carrier knocked out will help greatly. unfortunately this will only work once. in anticipation of an epic retaliation, ive transferred fighters back into PM as well.

also, a MSW was sunk with 1 torpedo off OZ, by the same sub she was hunting. a cat eaten by a mouse! so ill not be using minesweepers for ASW work anymore. but ive transferred to the east coast lots of bombers and i have them on nav search and ASW patrol, since tigers boats seeem to be almost hugging the coast.  also 2 boats have set out from Brisbane for Rabaul on a minelaying mission, and several other boats in the vicinity of rabaul are heading there at flank speed. i hope to try a night raid with PBYs on the carrier.

SoPac: still no sign of tigers 4 carriers that were spotted. no other naval activity spotted at or near canton. if Baker is any indication tiger is planning more moves into the SoPac, which makes the raid on Rabaul a given. since the MK14s are almost useless, ill be deploying quite a few boats as mine layers, especially in SoWesPac.

India/Burma: Now that there are more troops available, they are being sent on the march towards Myitkina. im also moving an AA unit to Kohima, and im moving more aviation support into the area. Illustrious is arriving at Columbo tomorrow finally, shes escorted by 20 or so destroyers.

also, as soon as the carriers and escorts have more fuel in their bunkers theyll head for RV with Halseys oilers, and ive sent the AO Cuyama south from Pearl as well. theres also 100,000+ fuel in Palmyra if need be.

Pearl: Have a convoy of transports sailing for Frisco. theyll pick up Marine and other units and bring them to Pearl. Wasp arrives in about 2 months on the west coast.

Frisco: most units have been sent to Frisco, as im using it as an embarkation port for ships and troops and planes. 2nd Marines are here too. i intend to use them, not sure where yet, but they shall be deployed.
