7/12/42: Calcutta falls with massive losses - Jap evac operation in Espirtu found no one to rescue, but did manage to lose some DDs - Combined Fleet moves in on Palmyra - TF51 reacts from Pearl but neither side can manage much damage this time, other than lots of AC lost.

7/12/42 Continued - VCR was not accurate, so I have no idea what damage KB suffered from the few bomb hits the U.S. CVs managed - U.S. damage classified [;)]

Jap transport TFs continue - Tanaka's TF has a CVE that takes a good deal of damage, also an AO and MCS lost to U.S. aircraft as they move in - then Adm Lee hits with his SCTF - 3 DD, 3 MCS and an AP lost [:D] 16th Jap Inf Div lands but Gen Geiger directs the defense - 1 Army Rgt and a Marine Bn hold off the assaults.
Meanwhile, South Pacific Fleet attempts Tarawa - everything goes well, except the main assault TF doesn't arrive - undeterred, the reserve force of 1 Rgt lands - and finds out SIGINT didn't reveal the whole picture - instead of 1 SBF, there were 2 SBFs and a Rgt.  Let me just sum up by saying a Congressional investigation is underway. [:@]

IJN losses (per sunk menu): 6DD, 1DE, AO, 3AP, 6MCS [8D]

7/19/42 Update - Searches by PBYs indicate KB more heavily damaged that first hoped - CVs Akagi and Kaga appear heavily damaged, Soryu somewhat damaged and Junyo sunk by follow-up LBA strikes [:D].

U.S. Fleet attacks and takes back Midway from the 1/52nd Inf Bde, using two Army divisions landed in series.[8D]

And the push-back begins!

I wouldn't worry too much -- you're not playing against Skipjack, and the India situation in your game is considerably more to the advantage of the Japanese Empire.

I must admit I've had a fair slice of luck in this game - the B26 has been more lethal than the G4M - hardly historical. But then again no one plays this game to repeat history [;)]

First week of August - Central Pacific Fleet organizes at Johnson Island and attacks Maleolap - 1st Marine Div had a very tough time, 3 rounds of combat go by until the Base SBF is subdued - Adm Turner didn't command any of the combats, most reverting back to the CENTPAC Air Commander (Adm Davidson) or Nimitz.  But finally the base is taken, and supplies and AC are landed. Now we will see whether this incursion into the Marshalls can be sustained

That is one of the annoying bugs that haven't been fixed yet -- combat defaults to the Air Leader. More, the latest database tends to make all but the top leaders have a value of 1 for everything outside their area of specialty. If you have an HQ Leader such as Nimitz with multiple skills, I think it's a good idea to not have an Air Leader at all -- the overall HQ commander will gain Air experience as the air combats proceed over the course of a couple of months or so.

8/9/42:

Hearing that the U.S. Press had denegraded them, G4M crews in the Marshalls strike back - 5 APs and 2 CVEs sunk as the U.S. fleet tries to bring in more supplies to Maleolap. In the South Pacific, 2 U.S. Divisions and 2 AUS Bdes (1 Inf, 1 Armoured) retake the Santa Cruz Islands. Air losses heavy on both sizes (280+ AC each).

8/16/42:

U.s. Fleet continues to try and fight supplies through to the Marshalls, G4Ms continue to hit back - this time the Enterprise takes a torpedo and takes considerable damage [:(]. Then the I-boats strike the retiring TFs - Idaho takes a ***** torp hit and goes down [:@]

Ouch! And some of your CVE's were sunk, too, which makes it harder to put together hunter-killer ASW TF's. Have you received any Fletcher class DD's yet?

A couple of Fletcher DDs just arrived. They soon will have work enough.

Here is the latest update from the Japanese perspective - thanks to Rybka:

8/16/42:
General Hara was looking at the message from Tokyo pensively. Did Tojo get crazy? This was the hardest order, which he had ever received:

"We are concerned for Your lack of activity after the fall of Calcutta. There are still strong British bases on Ceylon; they have to be eliminated. Naval forces promise to provide every possible help. We expect You fulfill this order by the end of September."
General Tojo

Hara waved at the Port disgustedly. Every possible help! There were harboured a handful of cruisers. Most of them had been in service nearly 20 years. How can these "old hookers" guard his forces? It´s clearly suicide. Maybe admiral Kimura will do a miracle, but if all Kamis weren´t with us ...

Even admiral Kimura was confused. But he prepared an invasion plan after some long days and sleepless nights. He led his fleets personally from on board the cruiser Suzuya. Kimura reserved the most dangerous mission for himself - attack on Colombo and lure most of British air and naval forces away from the transport fleets.

A few days later fleets cleared harbour and steamed to Ceylon. Kimura got to Colombo and began bombardment, but endless stream of planes turned his fleet into burning wrecks quickly. Even his own Suzuya exploded after bomb hit, but admiral was luckily rescued by Natori. This was a debacle, but maybe the sacrifice will save the main invasion fleets.

In the meantime, slow transport fleets just reached their destination (Triconmale). Vigilant patrol boats detected them and soon admiral Kajioka observed a black cloud of british planes coming to them. Suddenly, many silvery birds flew through this cloud, some enemy planes decorated fire and smoke and they fell to the sea. Some sailors begun exult. It´s our Reisens! But how is it possible? The nearest base is thousands miles far and all carriers are in Pacific. Which kamikaze did blow them here?

But despite this miracle, many bombers get through and attack. Fortunately, they noticed only supply ships and so all troops landed safely. For a while, Triconmale was ours!

Oops - how did I fail to mention that? Early in July, the 18th British Division was finally overwhelmed in Dacca, allowing all Japanese forces to concentrate on Calcutta. That they did and it fell unexpectedly in mid-July - despite having roughly 5 divisions, supplies, entrenchments and a decent "top-of-stack" unit. Since then all was quiet, until last week [:@]

Some updates:

8/30/42: Bloody air duels between Cairns and Townsville continue; British CL (Frobisher) and 2DD bombard Tricomolee ... LBA from Colombo finish a couple of Jap CLs trying to escape back to Calcutta ... Adm Lee moves in to defend Maleolap from invasion despite lack of CV cover, they will have to rely on land based F4Fs - which is like a belly dancer relying on a G-string for modesty ... KB strikes Lee's 5BBs and 3CAs, damaging Washington and South Dakota ... Then Lee runs into Musashi, Nagato, Mutsu, 3 Kongos, and several CAs - Washington sunk, looks like only damage to a Kongo done in return [:(] ... Marines stand tough as the 24th Div, 1/54th Bde, 53rd Div and the 1st Amp Bde land [8D]

9/6/42: Lots of good combat this turn [:)] Colombo LBA sinks several MCS / APs trying to get supplies to Tricomolee (looked like 20+ sunk), but it looks like they got through despite losses ... U.S. CVs arrive off Maleolap to escort in supplies, precipitating a duel with KB - Lexington damaged, but SBDs appear to have hit a CV, CVL and CVE in return

Dauntlesses from Maleolop claim some APs close by ... BBs brought in by Adm Scott (Pennsylvania, Arizona) manage to savage a Jap transport TF, G4Ms claim a CA in return.

In the South Pacific, Halsey's command tries again for Tarawa, despite weeks of planning the attack is a fiasco - the 3 invasion TFs move first and get pummeled by Jap LBA, only 1 manages to get through to it's destination - the 1 division landed (Americal) cannot take the island from the 2 Bdes, Bn and SBFs defending it.

I was looking forward to another surface combat, but my SCTF refused to leave Kwajalein [:@]

About Ceylon; I did two serious mistakes. First, I sent too little supplies with amphibious forces, troopers consumed all of them and planes couldn´t flight. When I realised it, I made the second mistake: I sent 6 or 7 transport TFs, because I believed some of them get through safely. But LBA attacked everyone three times, the last one destroyed completely. Fortunatelly, two didn´t retired, of course, the amount of delivered supplies was small.
These errors cost me 30 APs and MCSs for nothing in two weeks [:(]

Can't complain about lack of action in this game! Has anyone got a screenshot of ships sunk they can post?

Maleolap Evacuated

Post by Skipjack »

9/20/42: Admiral Fitch is halfway to Maleolap, and receives his instructions from Pearl Harbor - proceed at all hazards. The Marines defending the island are in desperate need of food, medicine, and above all, ammunition. Admiral Scott's SCTF stands by with his BBs and CAs to ward off a possible attack, while Admiral McCain provides long range CAP.

Strikes of Betties are endured which claim 4-5 AP/MCS, but most of the Jap air power switches it's emphasis to the U.S. CVs. After Wasp is heavily damaged and Saratoga moderately so they retire. Admiral Fitch's TF presses on and reaches the island through a surprising lull in enemy action.

At Maleolap, the fate of McCain greatly influences events. New orders are quickly sent from CINCPAC - withdraw all forces. This is the first time transports with speed less than 24 knots have reached Maleolap since it was taken, and with virtually no carrier support remaining, it will likely be the last for some time. Based on that, it is time to get out.

Admiral Fitch loads everything he can on his transports and sets course for the Line Islands - now the last cover the Central Pacific Fleet has for the Marshall Island operation is comprised of 4 flush-deck WWI DDs and 2 Grimsley DEs. Despite this the survivors slip through the jaws of death and escape to Palmyra. As they begin their refit the Central and South Pacific commands give thought to their next objective.
