Just capturing little bases. The main work is going on at Kendari, Balikpapan and Rabaul where major troop convoys are being formed. After checking things out it looks like I'll be bringing 500 AV into Java under carrier cover with another 300 going into Port Moresby under the protection of a CA TF ( there is at least one CL at PM but I'm hoping to avoid having to take it on in a naval battle as I've tasked a lot of my seaplanes on the CAs with naval attack missions.

1st January 1942 update:

Well, my supply situation is pretty poor with only about 2.7 Million tons of supplies available but the used supplies have been expended to good effect with major increases in production and a number of succesful invasions around the map.

Allied and Japanese losses:

I've destroyed 2,041 Allied planes in the first 24 days of combat at the expense of 1,110 of my own. Given, however, that 300 of those were lost on the first day and that I can begin affording to send my bombers in at a more self-preservatory height these losses are just about manageable. Pilot pools are expended with, essentially, no pilots in the pools anymore.

My long-term plan for the pilot pools once I get an operational pause ( once Malaysia, DEI and Phillipines fall ) is to convert my IJN land-based units back to training fighters and bombers ( Claudes, Nells etc ) while converting my IJA units to front-line units. I will then use my IJA units to bear the brunt of all of the fighting whilst setting up rotations of my IJN units such that I build up a large pilot reserve in each squadron and, overall, a large untapped pilot pool.

Why is this my plan? Well, I believe that when the Allies come calling in 1943 and 44 that they will probably miscalculate their approach ( a la AndyMac ( sorry Andy but that's my assesment of the objective strategic reality in your game vs PzB ) ) and will unnecessarily burden one aspect of their force ( usually the USN pilot pool ) with the fighting with the end result that if I don't let me IJN pilot pools get written down by his USMC, USAAF and Commonwealth pilots I can get an IJN on USN pilot pool matchup and in THAT matchup I should win seeing as I am on the defensive AND get roughly as many IJN pilots as he gets USN pilots.

The downside is that my IJA pilots ( 150 per month ) will have to fend off ALL the non-USN pilots ( over 750 per month ) such that the IJA will be fighting at a 5:1 disadvantage. Again though, by refusing to take offensive action and fighting at times and places that the enemy is most disadvantaged ( refusing to fight where he can mass many short-range escorts and only fighting where he has no escorts or only a few long-range ones ) I should be able to avoid allowing him to bring this preponderance to bear.


Army Points:

Allied ships Sunk:
420 Allied ships sunk at a cost of 5,949 points. The Allies have lost 3 USN CVs, 8 USN BBs, the PoW and Repulse, 14 CAs, 17 CLs, 45 DDs, 19 AOs, 26 TKs, 75 SS, 5 AR, 3 AS, 11 DMS, 4 DM and 9 ML as well as a huge number of AKs and other auxiliary shipping.

Japanese losses include 35 ships. 1 CA, 7 DD, 1 AV, 1 AO, 11 AP and 14 AK. Overall apart from the Chikuma which got mauled in a surface action things have really gone very well.


Fighter pilots and units. My best fighter unit is a 48 plane Daitai equipped with Zeroe and which has made 180 kills in the past month. Its top pilot is W. Kamisaka with 16 kills and it features 13 aces amongst its roster.


Production:
My HI is only at 12373 as while I have captured many resource-rich areas I haven't captured many industrialised areas yet. Once I get my teeth into India and the Soviet Union that should change rather rapidly though so I'm not too worried.

In terms of planes I'm producing roughly 250 Zeroes per month after a crash expansion programme and the CV-based units are pretty much swapped over. Over the coming month I will be swapping my IJN units back to Claudes ( apart from my top unit which I think I'll allow become an "Experten" unit ) and swapping my IJA units into Zeroes and into the front-lines.

I'm making 87 Oscars, 82 Bettys, 60 Kates, 45 Vals, 30 Sallys ( pre-war production ) and 22 Lillys ( which will expand to 120 per month before upgrading to the Ki-48 II, my first armoured bomber of the war ). I'm also making 19 Jakes as well as a huge number of H6K2s and H6K2-Ls as I want to have enough of both around for the major transport operations I'm planning to have as part of the invasion of Australia.


I plan to make about 60 Ki-109s per month ( if things go well and I take India easily enough ) since I don't have the supplies to make lots of the "bridging" planes of 1942 without cutting into my production of the real war-winners which come along in 1943.


Conclusions:
Overall I'm happy with my advance and how quickly it has gone. I could have cut the cost a lot by just escorting the Koumac invasion orce a bit more but overall losses haven't been too high.

In terms of the economic modelling I'm very happy. Japan can get very powerful very quickly BUT if you invest in your starting airframes too much you won't have enough to build up production of the 2nd generation of fighters and bombers ( those which become available in mid-42 ). It will be REALLY easy to completely mess up the Japanese economy in this mod, which is exactly as intended.

My basic plan is to gamble big and instead of upgrading to the mid-42 models and maintaining supremacy over the Allies from mid-42 to end-42 to produce so many of the early 42 models ( 1st generation) and move so fast that by the time the 2nd generation comes online the Allies are so thoroughly worn down that my 1st generation models will be enough to maintain air superiority.

Essentially I plan to "win so big" with the 1st generation models through the first 6 months of the war that I can forego the 2nd generation fighters and bombers ( Ki-44 II, Ki-109.Ki-45, Ki-49 etc ) and invest in the 3rd generation ( Ki-44 III, Ki-264s ) with which to fight the Allies from 1943 onward

Below you can see the situation in Malaysia. I have most of the Allied defenders pinned down in the jungles of the interior, 3 Bdes are also trapped at Singora and now I'm marshalling the 1,800 AV I have left uncommitted on the peninsula for an assault across the Singapore straits. Since I'm facing forces weakened by a couple of retreats and with low experience I expect Singapore to fall relatively easily once attacked.



Assessment of enemy actions:

I think 2nd ACR has correctly ascertained that I'm going for India next and he is holding reinforcements back from the front lines in order to bolster this 2nd line of defence. I think this is a mistake as by not committing to the front he is allowing me to over-run things so quickly as to make his 2nd line of defence a moot point.

Where else will he try to hold? Well, India is, IMO, by his reckoning, expendable. I think that he will want to hold Oz and a toehold in the Eastern Pacific ( aka Society and Cook Island ) and will flood both of those areas with troops.

I won't oppose either transfer as his sending troops and planes to the Society Islands allows me to:
a) kill the ships supporting those troops,
b) kill the planes defending those troops,
c) starve those troops to death under the umbrella of my long-range torpedo bombers.

One other thing.... I'd point to the effectiveness of my surface combat TFs. If you look at every battle they've fought - except the 7th December one in which the Boise ran into 4 old DDs and the Nemo-san's poor showing against the PTs - my SC TFs have absolutely slaughtered the opposition when they've met them. I really think that the 8 ship TF ( with a careful matching of gun ranges ) gives far and away the best results in naval combat.

It is all very slow at the moment as I'm waiting on:
1. my Malaysian troops to get into position for the assault on Singapore.

2. My forces in the Philippines to meet up at Clarke o I can bring them all to bear en masse at Manilla.

3. My forces to take Merak and Teloekbetoeng - as per our pre-game rules I cannot pursue into the Indian Ocean until either Singapore OR both of these bases fall. Once they fall I plan to aggressively send CVLs and CVA Yamato into the Indian Ocean with a view to driving the Royal Navy away from Ceylon and back to Karachi or Aden. My forces will then land in Burma and Ceylon before launching the Operational Manoeuvre Group into the enemy's operational depth ( aka the Indian mainland ) while I marshall the troops of the 2nd and 3rd waves for my main landings.

4. The clearance of Vladivostok. So long as the enemy hold it my forces on the road to Iman will be starved of supplies and combat power.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/07/42

I've missed a few combatreports but not a lot happened. Mostly I just withdrew my bombers from action and have begun upgrading and downgrading them as required.

Mostly I've just downgraded a few Ki-21 units to Ki-32s and Ki-48s as I'm producing both Ki-32s ( as bomber trainers and second-line bombers ) and Ki-48 Is ( which will upgrade to Ki-48 IIs which are my first available armoured bombers ).

Why have I recommenced production of the Ki-32?
Well if I were to use Ki-48s as training planes each Ki-48 I would require about 1800 lbs of supply per day ( I'm not 100% sure of the exact numbers but their relative relationship is what is important ) per plane. If I use the Ki-32 I only need 900lbs of supply per plane per day. In addition a Ki-32 costs 36 HI to produce while a Ki-48 I costs 72 HI ( double ) to produce.

So my basic bomber plan is to produce twin-engined planes when my economy has spare capacity and while I'm tooling up for my four-engined bombers but switch over to Ki-264 As ASAP. a Ki-264 A can carry 48 x 100 Kg bombs as compared to a Ki-48 II which can only carry 8 x 100 Kg bombs. So, 5 Ki-264 As project as much power as 30 x Ki-48 IIs. Each Ki-264 also costs 12 times as much supply per day to keep in the fight as a Ki-48 II but I think their extra survivability is worth the cost.

So, a small core of high-experience ki-264 Sentai who achieve results due to ability and excellent equipment as opposed to sheer numbers backed by a second-line of Ki-48 IIs with trained pilots ready to either upgrade to Ki-264s and replace mauled Ki-264 Sentai at the front line or to augment the Ki-264s for particularly important missions with a very large group of Ki-32 units in the rear areas training pilots up as cheaply as possible but ene masse in order to keep the experience levels of my front-line units above 80 Exp.

Yesterday I saw his MiG-3s for the first time. They scored a 1:1 kill ratio but today they were more fatigued and so my forces did a bit better. The MiG-3s are fearsome but if it costs me 50 pilots a month to kill the 45 he gets per month I can pay that price. It is a third of my replacement pilots per month but one needs to be ruthless at times.

Well, a succesful assault but not good enough. My troops will rest and recover for a day and then try again.

In the meantime massive transport convoys ( over 300 ships ) are on their way to Manilla to sealift the troops there to Singapore and begin preparing for the invasions of Ceylon and Burma. Why Singapore? Well, sailing up the Malacca straits should provide a bit of cover as to whether I'm aiming for Burma or India ( and it'll probably be both ) while Singapore is a malaria-free zone rich in supplies so it should prove an ideal location for my forces to rest and recuperate - which is essential if the invasion of India is to proceed as smoothly and quickly as I plan.

Once my forces are in Singapore and my shipping is in place I'll post the details of my plan to capture India. The emphasis is going to be on doing things smoothly and quickly with integration of my paraborne and naval forces into the IJA battleplan.

As predicted the MiG-3 loss ratio is moving nicely in my favour now. IMO he should have used them as base defence where most of the pilots which got hot down could return to the cockpit the next day chastened but wiser. That is the way to building up experience in the Soviet Air Force, the planes are excellent but the pilot experience is their achilles heel. Right now 2ndACR isn't maximising his potential to keep and gain experienced pilots and that is an error which is going to cost him.

I've spotted some Pe-2s flying recon here so I expect them to attack my shipping tomorrow. There's little I can do about this so I'll simply accept the casualties as the necessary price.

Aha, I had seen some shipping around my Aleutian conquests and set a Daitai of Nells up to take a look. It seems that the enemy sent in surface minelayers to mine my newly captured bases. This is interesting for some obvious and other ot so obvious reasons:

1. He is being aggressive and risking minelayers after having lost so many just a fortnight ago. You can really tell 2ndACR used to be a scout.

2. You don't mine bases you are planning to invae within the next couple of weeks. I think I've got him backed into a defensive posture in this region which will give me time to consolidate and bring engineers etc ito the region in order to build up my defences.

I'm feeling a lot more relaxed about this region after seeing this minelaying run.

I'm having terrible problems getting enough PPs together to buy my forces out of Japan. I have enough engineers etc to fully support my primary thrust but with almost every new arriving unit assigned to Home Army ( as opposed to other mods with less generous PP allocations where the forces may arrive assigned to the SRA Army or Burma Army etc in this mod almost all forces arrive assigned to Home Army and have to be bought out before they can be sent elsewhere.

I wish to fully polish off the DEI and Northern China before I decide just what is and isn't possible in terms of further offensives in China... More enemy reinforcements arrived but I've also managed to find another division. I think I can reinforce more effectively over the next 2 days.... Why the word effectively? Well, I'm sure he can bring more in but seeing as each of my troops has probably 50 to 100% more experience, better leaders and more supply even a 1:1 race in terms of troops committed actually keeps my relative adjusted AV superiority. The other thing is that the more he sends in to defend Honan the less likely he is to create a second line of defence.

So, I'm consciously accepting a more difficult initial battle in order to gain an easier battle when I hit Sian. My hope is that if I take my casualties at Honan where there are few resources and have an easier battle than would otherwise occur at Sian that I will capture more of the resources there intact, aiding my war effort in the long run.

Only 1,088 AV. Hmm, at that rate I might just be able to batter this place down. I'm going to have to think about this. I can bring roughly 6,000 AV ( unadjusted ) to bear on Iman and even with a tripling of his combat power due to the terrain and another 50% for fortifications ( 1,000 x 3 x 1.5 = 4,500 ) I would still have a very good chance of getting a good, solid 2:1 and pushing him out over time. It'll wreck a couple more of my divisions but it'll also wreck his and I only need to capture 2 more towns after Iman in order to render the Home Islands safe from enemy attack.

Like I said, I'll have to think about this. In the meantime I've ordered an additional 300 AV of Mongolian troops into Vladivostok and also another 400 or so AV from my bases opposite Iman. Hopefully that will help replace the losses I'm about to take if I try to take Iman. If I go for Borzya then they'll just reinforce that axis. So far I'm undecided on what to do next.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/12/42

With things winding down in the Malaysia/DEI sector I've finally begun setting my house in order as regards anti-submarine patrols. Today sees the establishment of a couple of ASW TF to root out enemy submarines on the approaches to Palembang.

Convoys:
Generally speaking I don't heavily escort my convoys as:
a) I can't heavily escort every convoy,
b) the more escorts I send with every convoy the more fuel I use per convoy,
c) there's extensive wear on escorts from being at sea for prolonged periods,
d) I think one gets better results with hunter-killer groups and the occasional CVE sweep.

Generally I assign a single MSW to each convoy as escort and then cluster my APDs, DMS, PCs etc into nodal hunter-killer groups.

So, what are the nodes...
Well I usually pick a couple of Level 9 ports to use as collection points for the OIL and RESOURCES of a region and use my small tankers and AKs to shuttle OIL, RESOURCES and supplies from the smaller satellite ports to the large Level 9 nodal port.

E.g. Toboali ships the 400 resources it produces per day to Batavia every day from where it moves by rail to Soerabaja. Kendari and Balikpapan ship their RESOURCES and OIL respectively to Soerabaja. The end result is that Soerabaja becomes a non-malarial depot with lots of HI and supplies to help damaged units throughout the DEI rebuild. Since Kendari and Balikpapan are only small ( Level 3 or 4 ) ports I will use small AKs to load supplies at those ports ( a 1200 ton AK can be fully loaded in 2 days at a Level 3 port ( 3 x 200 --- I think actually it loads up to 800 per day but I couldn't swear to it off the top of my head ) whereas a 4,000 ton AK will have to sit in that port for almost a week before being fully loaded. That's a lot of time to just be sitting still doing nothing and is highly inefficient.

Now, at a level 9 port each of those ships can load about 2,000 tons per day which means that, obviously, it makes more sense to use a smaller number of larger ships for routine trips to these larger ports.


By bringing OIL from Palembang straight to Singapore and then shipping the spare OIL and RESOURCES to the Home Islands from Singapores Level 9 port I can maximise my usage of the inefficient ultra-large AKs ( 10,000 tons plus ) freeing up lots of the smaller 1,000 ton AKs for use ferrying supplies to my front-line bases in the Pacific. Why the 1,000 ton AKs? Well I don't plan to build up the Ports in those bases since our Home Rules state that one cannot replenish one's naval fleets ( or airgroups ) at an Port smaller than Level 3. Since most of the Pacific is not yet developed I have the choice of whether or not to build a lot of Level 3 ports.

If I build them I will have safe harbours to run to when his subs hit my ships and I can more easily maintain any offensives BUT when he takes my bases he will be immediately able to replace his CV losses, dock damaged BBs, CAs etc and improve the survivability of his ships. My decision has been to curtail building in my Pacific holdings to Airfields and Forts ( in that order ) and preferentially use my smallest AKs to transport supplies to the Pacific. My nodal system seeks to minimise my need for small AKs in the DEI and free most of them up for the Pacific.


How does this all work out?
Well, let us assume that 400 resources per day are made at Kendari, a level 4 port which should allow loading of 800 tons per day. Soerabaja is a Level 9 port which can unload 1800 tons per day. It is 15 hexes from Kendari to Soerabaja which will take a 5 to 9 knot ship 8 days

So, a 2,000 ton AK will take 2.5 days to load at Kendari ( rounded up to 3 ), 8 days to reach Soerabaja and will then unload in roughly 1.1 days ( rounded up to 2 ). That's a total of 13 days. Kendari produces 5,200 tons of resources in that time which is handily carried by 3 x 2,000 ton AKs. So, 3 x 2,000 ton AKs and an MSW ensure that Kendari is MORE than adequately covered in terms of resource carriage. Throw in another 2 x 2000 ton AKs for supply repatriation ( since I wouldn't be expecting to have a massive garrison at Kendari ) and you can see that 2 MSW and 5 x 2000 ton AKs handily cover Kendari's transport needs, especially since the AKs can occasionally load a construction Bn or Aviation or infantry unit up and bring it to Kendari to replace a unit already there. ( The disruption to supply return would be minimised by using my air transport units to fly all the air-transportable elements of the Kendari unit being rotated back to Soerabaja for R&R leaving only a very small number of non-air transportable elements which can easily be crammed onto the decks along with the supplies ).

The same thing goes for Palembang. It is a 2 day trip at full speed from Palembang to Singapore and with roughly 600 OIL being produced there every turn one needs to remove about 600 FUEL and 600 OIL there every day. One can load 800 tons per day because it is a Level 4 port and one can unload 1800 tons per day at Singapore.

So, TWO x 4,000 ton TK can carry all the OIL from Palembang to Singapore. 3 days to unload at Singapore, 5 days to load at Palembang and 2 days for the journey = 10 days.

Throw in a single x 4,000 ton TK to carry half of the FUEL away ( and leave the rest behind so that Palembang can serve as a fueling base for passing ASW TFs or SC TFs and you can see that 2 MSW and 3 x 4,000 ton TKs take care of all Palembang's needs.

Sure, when one gets to Singapore things ramp up since it takes about 15 days to get to the Home Islands and back. So, if I sent 3 x 27,000 ton tankers to Singapore they would take 15 days to load fully ( 1800 x 15 = 27,000 ), take 15 days to reach the Home Islands and 15 days to unload there.

So, Palembang ( my largest refinery ) has its entire OIL shipment needs met by 3 MSW, 3 x 4,000 ton Tks and 3 x 27,000 ton Tks ( the 27,000 ton Tks being useless at the front lines as they are simply FAR too big to unload rapidly at my small front-line ports ).

I've done the maths and it looks like I can leave roughly half my tanker fleet in port at any time ready to support fleet operations ( which is the real aim of all this efficiency.... The more efficiently the convoy system works the more APs, AKs, AOs and TKs will be available to transport troops, supplies and fuel around my Empire in support of IJN operations.

Well, that's quite a detour but I think it is worth explaining the thinking behind the convoy system as it is such a crucial part of any Japanese player's game.

It is indeed. I've got my force for this raid on the move already as I've anticipated Singapore's fall for some time now and didn't want to waste time moving on from here. The only thing I will slow down for is to clear the Malacca straits of British submarines which could torpedo my shipping. Once that's done though I'll move on through.
 
At present 6 CVLs and CVA Yamato are sitting one hex off Singapore waiting to refuel and then they'll make their way for a little raid. I've pre-positioned the necessary escorts, already fully filled out the airgroups and I've gotten a large gaggle of BBs, CAs, DDs and AOs in order to make this a significant, dislocating raid. The combat vessels will move out first but the first wave of troops for India/Burma ( a completely soaking op ) will move out within 5 days with the second wave due in two weeks ( almost completely diversionary in nature and strength) and the main body due in a month's time.
 
In addition 3 of my 5 airborne units are sitting at Tavoy ready to begin airdrops all over Southern India and Burma when the time is right.
 
 
I'll go into the details of all of this tomorrow.

My massing of heavy artillery here is really taking a toll of the Soviet defenders. As of today my forces at Vladivostok are, again, on the march to Iman. I have decided to forego the push to Borzya as Iman is just too weakly held to pass up and I'd rather play it safe and continue a gradual slog forward than to try to go for a massive victory by going for Borzya with the end result that if I fail to take it Iman will have Level 9 forts by the time I return.

Tomorrow my forces will attack Baguio and Merak. I have a full combat-loaded ( by this I mean no more than 1,000 tons of troops and equipment per AP ) Japanese division 3 days out from Merak and so now is the time for me to take it and ensure it is in my hands and ready to receive this division... which should give my forces the power they need to begin progressing rapidly down the Javan coastline.

In other news we had to do a redo after a really weird bug struck. For some reason a 100 ship transport TF which I had ordered to move from San Fernando to Lingayen in order to pick up some of my ancillary unit there decide to move the 120 miles to Lingayen VIA BATAAN !!!! [8|] [8|] [8|]. Obviously this proved a VERY bad idea and 63 of the ships were sunk in just a single 12 hour phase. I asked for a do-over and gave the TF different movement orders and it looks like it worked out ok today. Fair dues to 2ndACR for his sporting behaviour. After the beating he has been taking I half-expected him to insist on continuing on ( which I would have done albeit with the understanding that when he asked for a do-over I'd reflect his decision back on him ).

So, kudos to 2ndACR for his behaviour. Its nice to see.
