Turn 15

With the fall of Knoxville secured, Central Army has been ordered to attack the Union forces in Chattanooga and start a siege on that city, Jackson's Corps will continue their advance on Raleigh to retake that city, and Army of the West will lay siege to Cairo.

Turn 15 second half

Central Army arrived in Chattanoogawith 62.300 men to face the 8.700 Union troops there, but the Union commander decided to flee the scene, and managed to escape to....Knoxville which was once again to capture Knoxville.
The Union also managed to capture Sparta and Shenandoah with minor forces. This is no real issue, just a nuisance, however they will soon be forced off Confederate lands.

Some good news, the Union city of Cairo surrendered to AotW! Hurrah!

Turn 16

Our Central Army will lay siege to Chattanooga, however 20th Div under P.R.Cleburn will leave CA and move to Sparta to engage the small union division present, Jackson will besiege Raleigh, AotW will move to Nashville and Lee's AoV will drive the Union out of the Valley. In case the Union tries to retake Cairo with the few troops they still have in the area, the GARR in Memphis relocates to Cairo.

Word from throughout the South informs us that 2 horse farms have been built and that another camp has been produced in Texas. The people of Richmond realize that more troops will speed up the war, and as such have decided that they will raise a CAV brigade.

Turn 16 second half

AotW with 119.500 men and 42 brigades intercepted the small Union army out in the west of 10.500 men and 8 brigades. After a brief battle the Union had lost 5840 men, 4 brigades and 7 generals. Of the 4 brigades one was a CAV brigade, their horses has been added to our stockpile. AotW's losses were 1736 brave men.
In the Valley, Lee engaged a small Union army. Lee brought 42 brigades and 115.000 men into the battle. The Union commander had at his command 16.000 men distributed in 9 brigades. Losses ran up to 1718 of our boys to 7156 Northern agressors. 5 Union brigades surrendered, as did the general S.A.Hurlbut.

Turn 17

Central Army will finish the siege of Chattanooga, Jackson is to finish the siege of Raleigh. Lee has been issued orders to bring AoV back into Fredricksburg, and our AotW will take the area of Paducah.

After a brief meeting with the governors of Florida and Texas it has been agreed that no more camps will be built in those states, as they are currently devoid of available men.
Production orders were as follows:
-3 camps in Alabama
-1 horse farm
-1 academy
-1 engineering research facility.

Turn 17 second half
It seems the Union still wants to go on the advance, despite their low numbers. Union troops moved into, and captured Kenawha and Northern Smokies, and they advanced on Cairo. With Lee in the Valley, two small Union armies under general Sherman moved into Fredricksburg, were they met Lee on his way back. Sherman soon called in all of the Army of Potomac.
Lee decided to take a defensive position, and this paid off in full. The Union had 12.071 dead, with 15 brigades surrendering as well as 3 of their generals. Of the generals the most prominent figure was A.E.Burnside. Unfortunately 2764 of our boys will not come home after this battle.

Turn 18

Jackson's Corps is moving towards Northern Smokies, the Central Army moves towards Knoxville were 20th Div will rejoin them. AotW moves to Lower Tenn. River, but 13th Dib under R.Bullocks departs AotW and moves to Cairo to support the defenders there. The GARR in Lynchburg moves to Franklin, with its final destination being Wheeling.

The cities of Norfolk and Wheeling reports that they are both training a CAV brigade. Apart from that an engineering department is being built, as well as 3 horse farms.

Our researchers have made another breakthrough, this time they have found a way for our artillery pieces to fire over other units. (indirect fire)

Turn 18 second half

Jackson forces the Union Div in the Smokies out from the Smokies and into Knoxville were CA is more than ready for them. The Union Div retreats back into Kentucky after spotting our CA in Knoxville.

13th Div engage the Union forces at Cairo, both sides are evenly matched, both deploying 6 brigades, although we have some more troops, 15.300 to the Unions 12.700. After a brief engagement the Union retreats, but not before losing 3736 men, 3 brigades and the general N.P.Banks. Our losses totaled at 1181 men.

Our spies reports that the Union are training their units in how to use the bayonet, and that their naval officers now have to attend college before being assigned to a ship. (Union recieves Bayonet Practice I and Naval College upgrades)

Turn 19

General Jackson's men moves towards Kenawha to retake the province, the GARR in Franklin moves to Parkersburg and AotW moves into Bowling Green to take that province from the North. CA is ordered to lay siege to Knoxville to bring the city back into our hands.

The state of Alabama has been ordered to build 2 camps and a horse farm, and Richmond builds an academy.

Turn 19 second half

The Union still sees a need to go on the offensive, and capture the unprotected city of Wheeling as well as the province of Sparta.

Turn 20

We need to block the Union force in Sparta, so 20th Div leaves CA and moves into Chattanooga while the 16th Div under S.Price leaves AotW and moves to Nashville.
Jackson is ordered to retake Wheeling.

The inhabitants if Charleston reports to be training a CAV brigade, and the good people in Wilmington tells that they are forming an INF brigade.

Our researchers made more breakthroughs. Our artillery is now able to move faster, and our cartridges are now better suited to wet weather. ( Moisture proof cartridges and Artillery training upgrades recieved)

Turn 21

jackson has been told not to report back untill the city of Wheeling is once more in Southern hands, the GARR in Parkersburg joins up with Jackson to occupy the city of Wheeling as soon as Jackson has taken the city.
AotW is ordered into Sparta to drive back the Union div there.

The state of Alabama proudly reported that they have started the construction of two more camps to help the Confederate cause.

All rejoice!! High Command has seen fit to promote General Robert E. Lee to 5 stars. That makes him overall commander of all CSA troops.

Turn 21 second half
Jackson reported back that the city of Wheeling fell almost without a gun fired, and AotW drove the Union div in Sparta back into Kentucky.

The US forces in the West made another attempt to drive our 13th Div away from Cairo. Our 15.700 men faced 6.000 union troops. The Union made a gallant effort, and aided by a brigade of artillery they managed to inflict a staggering 2077 casualties to our men. The Union attack was finally rebuffed, 2919 Union soldiers lay dead on the field, while the artillery they brought into the fight was captured by our troops. Together with the Union artillery we also captured Northern general J.T.Owen.

Turn 22

To help the shortage of horses, no less than 7 horse farms have been ordered built.

Jackson's Corps is ordered to move to Colombus, the GARR that accompanied Jackson will take position in Wheeling.
CA is ordered to move into Appalachia and force the Union div there to retreat.
20th Div will rejoin CA and help drive the enemy from Appalachia.
16th Div will head back and reform with AotW.
4th Army under Beauregard is finally given orders, and will move to Abingdon.

Turn 22 second half

Central Army performed well and forced the Union to retreat from Appalachia.

Turn 23

AotW is issued orders to move to Bowling Green.
4th Army will move to Kenawha were it will be in position to head to Wheeling were the Union is likely to send a Div to try to lay siege to the city.
Jackson is ordered to lay siege to Colombus.

Turn 23 second half

Rosecranz has taken command of the Union west army, and wastes no time, but launches an attack on Cairo were my 13th Div is positioned. Rosecranz brings 9.000 men to face our 15.200 and is defeated. 2601 Union troops dead to our 1107. The Union also lost 2 brigades that surrendered to our forces. The generals of those two brigades, J.Buford and L.F.Ross also surrendered, and will spend the rest of the war in a Southern resort.

As expected, the Union moved a div to Wheeling.

Unfortunately our last runner was sunk while trying to bring some supplies from Europe.

Turn 24

Central Army is ordered to move to Lexington to try to bring that town into our camp as well, and 4th Army is on the march towards Wheeling to aid the besieged city.

Our researchers have managed to improve the Springfield gun, this should cause even heavier Union casualties. (Improved Springfield upgrade recieved)

Turn 24 second half

4th Army reached Wheeling and immediately went into combat with the Union div that was present. Beauregard brought 31.100 men into the battle to face the 5.900 Union troops. The end result was never in question, and the Union lost 3 generals and 2 brigades to our POW camps as well as 2225 dead. Our casualties were 1169. However in the heat of battle a Union sharpshooter managed to critically wound General M.D.Ector. We hope the entire nation will prey for his safe recovery.

Better news were recieved from general Jackson, he reported to have captured the city of Columbus.

The Union army in the west has moved to the Lower Tenn. River, this is something that must be dealt with!

Turn 25

Jackson reports to be heading towards Zanesville, while Beauregard heads towards Chillicothe. CA is ordered to lay siege to Lexington, while AotW is ordered to leave the 18th Div under M.Lovell in Bowling Green, while its main body is to move to Lower Tenn. River to force the Union army there back north.

Our researchers had a great period, and learned how to perform better during sieges, how to make our privateers cheaper to produce, and they also mentioned that crippled men could still perform some minor duties in our forces. This should improve the availability of our manpower. (Siege Techniques I, Invalide Corps and organized Privateers research unlocked)

Turn 25 second half

The Union army in Lower Tenn. River was indeed forced back north of the river, so AotW fulfilled their task very well.

Our Spies reports that the Union has found a way to produce even bigger guns for their forts! (Union recieves heavy Rodman Guns upgrade)

-AotW is ordered to West Ohio River to engage the Union forces there.
-4th Army is ordered to move to Ohio River and engage the Union div there.
-CA is ordered to move to Frankfort.

Turn 26 second half

AotW froced the Union out of West Ohio River, losing only 349 men in the prosess, while inflicting 3317 casualties on the enemy as well as capturing two brigades.
4th Army forced the Union div in Ohio River to retreat to Covington.

SAD NEWS! General Ector has died from his wounds. Our thoughts go to his family.

War summary

It is clear that the war was won on turn 9. The Union lost far too many brigades, which let me have a superiority in numbers on every front. When the South gains numerically superiority the Union is in bad shape, this is due to the fact that the southern brigades are of better quality and usually better led. The further loss of several of the Union's best generals was another nail in the coffin, and I could have won the war earlier, but chose to go slow and deliberate.

What I never got around to do, but that I intended was to demonstrate how to transform an INF brigade into a CAV or ARTY brigade. I will instead have to simply describe how it is done here.

An INF brigade can be given "brigade cavalry" and "brigade artillery" upgrades, if you chose the same upgrade for both slots on an INF brigade it will transform into a CAV or ARTY brigade. Two "brigade cavalry" upgrades will transform the INF into a CAV, and two "brigade artillery" will transform the INF into an artillery piece.
The downfall to this is that the unit will lose one full point of morale (4.0->3.0, 3.0->2.0 etc), but it might in some cases be a good thing to do, espesially if you find that the enemy has alot more CAV brigades than you, and is always allowed to chose CAV actions at the start of the battle.

Turn 7

Our research paid of, and we went with Line marching this will allow our units to move further while in line formation. That should prove effective.

How will that make your units more effective?

It does not increase efficency of my units as such, however that upgrade allows my men to march further when in line formation. This means that I can deploy into a line and still move some distance (bonus of 2 normal hexes per turn). Without it, units in line formation moves quite slow, which means you will likely deply in line formation just after you march up to the enemy. Now I will stop out of firing range, deploy line, and then march on.

Warning!

This game was against the AI, I would never deploy the same tactics and the same movements of my army if I faced a human player. As the South if you play against the AI you can afford to wait and let the enemy come to you, against a human opponent you will need to be on the lookout for any possibility to capture fractions of the mighty Union war machine.
The South starts with better quality troops, but a human Union player would likely take his time, strengthen his forces, rearm and prepare before attacking, this would give his generals time to train his units, and you might end up facing better Union brigades than you would if you play the AI.

So in other words, when facing a human opponent you will need to be somewhat more agressive, but remember not to cross the thin thin line between brave and foolish!

Exactly, time is on the Union's side, it will allow the Union brigades to be better prepared for the fight, but this is something the AI does not comprehend. The AI is suffering severly from Lincoln's desiree to do something no matter the cost.
