17 December 1941 (Hawaii) 18 Dec (Far East)

The night turn began with 5 Blenheim night fighters missing an AP in the Gulf of Thailand.

DE Wakatake missed USN sub Narwhal at Molokai.

In spite of the strategic plan to avoid the mines at Lahaina until they were cleared, the game display
falsely said the mines were cleared - and so TF 8 ran in on the place - detecting mines the hard way
(that is, hitting them). 1 AP, 1 AK, 2 DD were all hit by mines. 20 casualties to troop cargo.
90 CD shots fired by the combined base forces (the one from Molokai is here as well) - scoring one
gun hit on DD Ayanami - probably a 155mm. 294 more Japanese casualties to landing operations.
18 Allied casualties and 1 gun lost to counterbattery fire from ships.

Landings occurred at Chang Mai, Thailand (to secure it for the Axis government in spite of local sympathy
opposed to the war) and San Fernando (129 Japanese casualties).

TF 8 managed to hit two more mines (both on DD) in the pre dawn landing phase. 73 more CD shots fired
for 4 hits on 2 AKs and a DE. Japanese ground losses: 121 casualties reported
Allied ground losses: 71 casualties, 2 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost (to counterbattery fire).

55 more Japanese casualties for pre dawn landings at San Fernando.

Dutch sub KXII torpedoed AK Fukuyo Maru in the Gulf of Thailand. CLAA Katori missed the sub in its counterattack.
A second attacked missed the same AK - and Katori still missed on its run as well.

Ro-42 torpedoed AK Parcita at Soerabaja.

8 DE detected, attacked and hit USN sub Narwhal at Molokai.

This one I cannot explain: I don't run in major, loaded amphib TFs with no air cover - but for some reason - that is what we have here. For this reason - Halsey's air transfer of both carrier strike groups to Hawaii two days ago put the land based air forces there in a position to exploit the opportunity - which they made heroic efforts to do:

Day Air attack on TF, near Lahaina [Maui] at 115,73

CL Abukuma
DE Kari
AK Kamogawa Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

If that is not enough - they also discovered Hiryu and Soryu in a coastal hex of the Big Island - cutting CAP in half - and penetrating it with ease:

RE: RHS Test 13D: 17 Dec Event Analysis

Post by el cid again »

Event analysis: Apparently Soryu was detached to cover the landings at Lahaina - and she was re routed by AI for some reason - ran out of fuel - and stopped moving in a coastal hex of the Big Island - a location from which her CAP provided no cover for the TFs at Lahaina. This was a bad move on my part: aside from not understanding the routing the carrier TF would take - not enough CAP were assigned to be effective vs the size of the enemy airpower available (I mis estimated the number of aircraft still effective on Oahu) - and the TF should have had two or more carriers in it. This subjected the carrier to the same risk it would have faced had it made Lahaina - without providing any cover at all for the transports which did make Lahaina.

Yes, I did...

I have to bow out of our game. I'll admit I kept on going out of respect for your time and your commitment to RHS...

I thank you for this opportunity to test something much better than stock. I just wish I had the time and ability necessary for this.

RE: RHS Test 13D: Game to restart

Post by el cid again »

This is a current test - and it has not got very far into the war.

The amount of work just to do a proper first turn for Japan is a man week: it is not worth the effort to invest
the time to do a new test (with so little changed in files) just to get back to this point.

For this reason - I will take over the Allies - and promote Mifune to run the Japanese - and we will proceed.

I do not regard it as respectful of the effort it takes to do a campaign game and just to drop the whole thing before useful lessons can be learned. I am disinclined to restart yet again. We often have to do so because of software problems or file problems - we should not add to that list.

RE: RHS Test 13D: What Happened to Halsey's Carriers

Post by el cid again »

The Allied move was brilliant: Halsey's two carriers transferred their air groups to Oahu - meaning they were in strike range of IJN carriers and transports WITHOUT risking the big ships. This worked to a degree - one carrier took a bomb hit - and air cover issues permitted serious damage to laden transports - some of which were ahead of plan as things seemed to be going well.

But in the end the move failed to decisively turn the campaign around - and both carriers were lost. Why?

First - IJN had long range land based eyes out - and they saw Halsey's force as a neat compact body SE of Hawaii. This was a mistake: uncovered - the Allied ships should have minimized their risk - and not been together. Moving on different axis at full speed - it would be nearly impossible to lose both carriers.

Second - the KB decided to break my normal doctrine - cover the transports - and split into ling range and short range wings. The long range wing made a dash to get into launch position - and failed - by a heartbreaking one hex. But the enemy was still detected - and still in one formation. Unfortunately almost every ship in the fast force was unacceptably low on fuel after the dash.

Third - I broke my main doctrines - and separated a single ship - Kaga - to persue. Normally one does not send a carrier unescorted away from friendly bases and fuel - doubly so vs a superior number of enemy carriers. But THESE enemy carriers had no aircraft - and he would not dream we were running around vulnerable to surface forces wholly unescorted. We also saw no evidence he was retreating onto a position supported by submarines. ANY air group is better than NO air group - so we gambled and hoped for the best. There was still a risk he might change course too much - no single position could cover all his options.

Fourth - he stayed on course - so the best position estimate was also correct - and we got two air strikes off - which did fatal damage to both carriers. There was some attrition of aircraft - and one ship took two days to sink - but it was of course worth it. As a bonus - his carriers were supported by a tanker - and the rest of the fast wing of KB - unable to sprint again - changed course and went for that.

My doctrine is that doctrine is to be followed EXCEPT when it is clearly better to do something different.
A believer in naval air power - I felt the single carrier was superior to a de facto surface force - and early in the war the enemy has few carriers. Letting them survive was not attractive - and I was willing to persue them for a week - to which end I organized tankers - and curtailed other operations. It turned out not to be necessary.
