If CoGEE is as good as it looks, I may just retire from reviewing and just play.

thegreatwent,
The scale is 100 yards per hex.

Bismarck,
It's only improved since the beta version that you previewed a few months ago.

EDIT: Speaking of which, I just realized that the link to Bismarck's preview, the only one for COG:EE so far, is in the old forum, so here it is again: http://www.wargamer.com/article/2582/cr ... on-preview

This looks pretty excellent. Not sure about the sea graphics though...a little hard on the eyes and looks like resin scrapes.

What are resin scrapes?

The water is animated, moving in the direction of the wind, so I don't think it will be hard on your eyes. (Once we release our promotional videos you should be able to see for yourself what it looks like.)

Ahhh....animated waves..that explains the seemingly rigid "cast resin scrapes" sometimes used in modelling naval dioramas. Seriously, this naval module looks great...game must be extremely detailed.

Looks great, can't wait. Question: I saw a 'tow'-button; does this allow you to tow another ship (that's otherwise unable to flee) out of harm's way, preventing its automatic surrender?

Yes, or you can tow a captured ship that you've beaten up so badly it can't move much on its own.

The "tow" button allows you to tow friendly ships.  It's especially useful in naval actions that occur in harbors or in the offing for towing friendly ships that run out of leeway.

Are there weather effects besides wind speed? Like rough seas might keep ships from using their lower gun decks or fog creates poor visibility.

Looks great.

When a ship strikes it colors and surrenders and the ship becomes yours, is deemed to be friendly? If so, can you tow it then?

The lower gun decks idea isn't in there -- though by all means please add it to the "Wish List" thread we'll be starting after release and perhaps we'll add it! -- but there's certainly fog impacting visibility. There's also snow (and heavy snow), rain and storms, with winds ranging from light to gale-force.

Another thing I didn't mention is that some battles can take place in coastal waters, which lets on drop anchor and impacts maneuverability, and there is also the option for fighting out harbor attacks in detail, with land-based batteries able to shell the attacking fleet. I'll see if I can make some screenshots in the near future.

Sounds great. I think I read where you aren't planning on this, but it would be nice to be able to set up and fight naval battles (and land for that matter) outside of the regular game. Like PDiFolco said, this may be better than those stand alone games.

It's something we've thought about. We'll have to see what the level of interest is after the game has been out for a while.

The battle engine is certainly up to the task of doing stand alone scenarios that could be played out over tcp/ip. Both free form and historical battles would be awesome.

Im certain the level of interest would be there.

the naval partion looks to me like a PC version of "woodens ships and iron men", and as such is something I am going to start the game up for. Just playing a naval battle now and then. REALLY looking forwards to this!
