Barb: Thanks for the map. I will feel free, until I get kicked out of Java, to move units into ABDACOM without paying PPs. I will continue to pay points to move units into the Pacific commands. I made a deal with the AI and a deal is a deal.

I will also try to be more explicit about what I am doing and why. This, of course, assumes that, on occasion, I will have some idea of what I'm trying to do.

This is an excellent AAR. And I think you do a pretty good job explaining your decisions.
Keep up the good work!

I wonder who that other CV is.

Also spotted - CA at Truk

Plans and Operations

India

Status of evacuation of Rangoon, Tavoy, and Point Victoria:

Rangoon - All  units except 221 RAF Group and Ranbgoon Force have been embarked and are on their way to Batavia via Padang.

Tavoy - Transport has arrived and embarkation of  107 RAF BF has begun

Victoria Point - 108 RAF BF has been loaded and is on its way to Batavia

Malaya Singapore

Now that the Japanese have captured both Alor Star and Khota Bharu, The units at Taiping have Japs to the front of them and Japs to the left of them. Supposedly, the left flank is secure because there's nothing but jungle out there and everyone knows it's impossible to move large formations through jungle. However, the Japanese seem to be pretty adept at doing the impossible, so I think I'll withdraw the troops at Taiping to Kuala Lumpur

Dutch East Indies

With a Japanese CVL poking around northern Borneo, I'm getting a little antsy about leaving Repulse and her brood at Batavia. I'm adding CL Dragon and CL Durban to her TF and sending them to Soerabaja

CA Houston has arrived at Soerabaja. My force at Soerabajo now consists of CA, 4CLs,and 16DDs plus Repluse and her gang are on they way. Now all I have to do is find some Japanese ships who do not have aircover, are sailing in the daytime, and who have forgotten to bring their torpedoes.

Elsewhere in the DEI the Batavian Bugout is really starting to rev up.

Southwest Pacific Command

Sparrow and Gull force are on their way to Port Moresby
TF transporting 103 RAF BF is loading supplies at Brisbane
All told I have about 80 supply ships headed to the West Coast from OZ/NZ

Rabaul was bombed today and it looks like the Japanese are putting together an invasion TF at Truk. Rabaul would have to be the most likely target. If I can get established at PM and Gilli, sooner or later, I'll have the means to bomb them back into the stone age but, until then, they're going to be a thorn in my side.

I'm beginning to devise a scheme.

When last seen the KB was headed west. They're probably going back to dear old Nippon but, even if they're not, I don't see them headed for Rabaul. They have more serious fish to fry. The mini KB is fully engaged in the PI and DEI so, they're out of the picture for the moment.

Enterprise is sitting at PH fully loaded and ready to go. How 'bout I bring her down to the Solomons staying well east of any Japanese air space?. I've done some messing around with Bhodi's Utility and it looks like there's a sweet spot around Shortlands that lets me stay out of the range of zeroes based at Truk but puts me close enough to launch a strike at Rabaul shipping. Here's what it loooks like:

Image

Image

EDIT: Whoa! What am I thinking? The zeroes aren't going to be my problem. The Betties are. Maybe I'd better turn big E around.

I'd really, REALLY, like some input on this one.

The CV with Zuiho is probably CVE Hosho. They both start the game at Kure, and the AI usually puts them together in a TF.

As for Enterprise, I would recommend bringing her down for defensive purposes, but not try the interdiction at Shortlands. The AI usually makes a big push to get Rabaul ASAP; by the time you get a CV in the area it'll be covered by Bettys. Your best bet is to try LBA from PM/Gili; I know their experience level is not to great, but you should hit at least a couple of AKs/APs.

Hope this helps.

I've played the next turn and AI is already landing at Rabaul. I'll stick with plan A and gradually build up LBA

I'd really, REALLY, like some input on this one.

Dec. '41 is too early to take any real risks. Otherwise I would recommend getting into Gasmata for extra land-based CAP, and intercepting the Betties at a range far enough so that they carry bombs instead of torpedoes.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Troops at Rangoon, Tavoy, and Point Victoria have all been evacuated. These units are all en route to Batavia. Upon arrival I'll decide what to do with them.

Canton

TF 1157 has finished unloading 26th FA Bde at Canton Island. This TF will disband and its ships will form three new TFs:

TF 1014 composed of PC Niagara, AK Coast Farmer, and AK General Halstead will proceed to Tongatapu, embark the 114th RAF base force and deliver it to Lugarville. This force is already assigned to SOPAC and will start prepping for Lugarville immediately

Image

TF 1052 composed of CA Pensacola, AP Hollbrook, AP Chaurmont, and AP Bloemfontrin will proceed to Upolu, embark the 7th USMC Def Bn, and transport it to Gilli Gilli, Unit has been prepping for this move,  and PPs have been paid to transfer it to SWPAC

TF 1076 composed of AP Republic and AP Meigs will proceed to Upolu, embark  the 116th USN BF, and proceed to Gilli Gilli.. Unit has been prepping for this move and PPs have been paid to transfer it to SWPAC

Time flies when you're having fun!

One week into the war - Let's take stock.

Philippines

The Japanese have command of both air and sea. We cannot reinforce. Therefore, War Plan Orange 3 (WPO-3) is in effect.

Under WPO-3 the mission of the Philippine garrison is to hold the entrance to Manila Bay and deny its use to Japanese naval forces. The main task of the Army is to prevent enemy landings. Failing this, they are to defeat those forces that succeeded in landing. If this fails, the Northern Luzon Force is to engage in delaying action in central Luzon while the Southern Luzon Force impede the Japanese advance up the Bicol Peninsula. Gradually, these forces will withdraw to Bataan. Manila is to be declared an open city and units there are to transfer to the Bataan peninsula. Bataan is the key to Manila Bay and is to be defended to the last extremity.

Malaya - Singapore

Again, the Japanese control both the air and sea. Reinforcement is possible but extremely hazardous. The Japanese have advanced almost at will down the Malay peninsula. Astonishingly, intelligence reported that the Japanese forces were half the size of the defenders. London was dismayed by this information and sent out a special envoy to survey the situation.

The envoy, Sir Buffington Smytin-Smith, reported that the rank and file had lost confidence in General Percival. He was told that, when Percival was urged by his senior engineering officer to fortify the north coast of Singapore Island, the general replied that such fortifications would be "bad for morale". Sir Smytin-Smith recommended that Percival be relieved and be replaced by a more agressive officer. Churchill accepted this advice and, after consulting with the MOD, reached down into the ranks, promoted Col C. M. Wavell to Lt. General, and appointed him as the new commander of the Malay Army. Gen Percival was assigned new duties as 2nd assistant harbormaster at Pitcairn Island.

Netherlands East Indies

At first I thought that this would be another "fight to the death" situation, but now I am beginning to have second thoughts. Four infantry brigades plus several base units are on their way from India and Burma. In the Philippines General Brereton, MacArthur's air commander, has recommended that the B-17s there be evacuated to either Dutch or Australian airfields. These could be sent to Java. Yesterday TF 1139 transporting VMF-221 and its 24 F2A aircraft departed SF for the South Pacific. It too, could end up in the DEI. We'll see.

Port Moresby - Gilli Gilli

My intention is to put these bases to use as unsinkable aircraft carriers. Properly garrisoned, aircraft from these bases can help prevent any further Japanese advance towards Australia, hinder any enemy movement in the Solomons, bomb Rabaul back to the stone age, and provide air cover for the old island hopping act.

LOC West Coast to OZ/NZ

Establishing the line Johnston-Baker-Lugarville-Noumea is well under way. There are already garrisons at Noumea and Johnston. TFs are on  the way to deliver troops to Lugarville and Baker. As soon as possible patrol aircraft will be sent to each of these bases. Engineers, fighter aircraft, and additional troops will follow.

The first part is historical, the later part definitely not. Although Percival's new posting is probably better than being a Japanese POW . . .[:D]

How 'bout that!. Jap ships aren't bulletproof after all.! We actually sunk something!

The Japanese have sunk 21 allied ships and the Allies have sunk one of theirs. There is a growing consensus among the naval brass that some effort should be made to improve this ratio.
