Jan. 4th + 5th, 1942:

Burma: Pegu falls unceremoniously to a 3:1 attack. I should have listened to my instincts and given up southern Burma. Defending Pegu looks good on paper but the troops can't hold. While the raw AV of early CW units look good, it is probably better to treat them like Chinese units initially. Their adjusted AV is just awful.

Now it becomes a race to extract the defeated troops from the deathtrap called Rangoon. Allied HQ hasn't decided yet if there should be another stand in the Mandalay area or not.

Malaya: The IJA is advancing towards the first real defensive line - Temuleoh (?) - Kuala Lumpur. Both bases are held by a division equiv. so a delay of a few days here should hopefully be possible.

DEI: On Borneo 2 IJA infantry battalions advanced overland from Kuching and captured Sambas. I have to assume that they will continue their march through the jungle to clear out that part of Borneo.

On Java the pocket around Buitenzorg is all but closed. The AV of the KNIL army is pretty atrocious by now but the bad terrain has so far prevented their surrender. Still, it is only a matter of time.

Finally the former defenders of Kendari are holed up in Kolaka where the Sasebo 1st SNLF is busy digging them out.

China: Tsiaotso falls and a few more Chinese corps are retreated in the north. [>:]

Luzon: An undefended Manila falls and 100+k fuel is lost. On the bright side a resupply convoy has made it to Bataan bringing much needed supplies. I doubt that there will be a chance to sneak in another one though.

---

Also a word of advice for all other allied players: if you haven't already done so, find the xAP Queen Elizabeth and use her for transport missions (preferably in "safe" waters) while she is available. That ship is amazing.

Jan. 6th, 1942:

Sub warfare: I-7 sank a small AKL off the West Coast. A couple of YPs have been detached to see how they can perform against this nuisance.

To even the score S-39 nailed xAKL Heimei Maru off Takao.

DEI: The KNIL army was forced out of Buitenzorg. Their AV had been 57 before the retreat so the end is near. The IJA used 1200 AV to tear them apart while several other units are advancing fast down the coast. Soerabaja's defenders should be able to handle the advance guard but against the main body the base will not last long.

Burma: Rangoon has been evacuated just in time as several Japanese units arrive in the city. A partisan uprising trashed the airfield but caused no further damage.

SW Pacific: A daring rescue mission to Koumac managed to get the former defenders of Noumea off the island and to the (temporary?) safety of Australia. It is probably not very important in the long run but it is nice to see such attempts succeed.

---

After the QE here is another favorite class of mine: the KPM troop transports. While not as flashy as their big cousin, these ships have proved themselves to be very useful in the confined waters of the DEI. They are small enough to be expendable but have just the right mix of troop and cargo space to evacuate a battalion or base force on their own. I like them. [:)]

Jan. 7th, 1942:

West Coast: The IJN strikes again when I-20 sinks xAKL Lahaina. There is a real shortage of escorts in the area currently. To make things more secure, I have been thinking about sending the Asiatic Fleet DDs there (via Cape Town and Panama). That transit will take a while but with Betties at Batavia and Kendari the time for surface actions in the DEI is over anyway.

Fijis: The I boats are also active here but the presence of DDs makes the base more secure. The biggest problem now is the speed of unloading (or lack thereof).

China: The IJA is preparing to move into Changsha. This base is as secure as I could make it so I don't think they'll be able to make much progress there.

In the south of China the enemy offensive aimed at Kanshien was (barely) beaten back. 5 more units are advancing on Kukong though - which is unlikely to hold - so this seems likely only to be a temporary success. Still, any forced retreat is good for China.

Jan. 8th, 1942:

PI: The dutch minelaying sub hit a type 4 mine while visiting Takao. [:@] Damage is not too bad though.

Otherwise the area is fairly quiet. My resupply convoy got away for now except for PC Formalhaut which ate a 60 kg bomb. The boat is currently disbanded in a level 2 port to (hopefully) put out the fires and pump out the extra water.

The IJA seems content with bombarding at Clark Field.

DEI: While continuing to advance on Java an engineer regiment was also landed at Oosthaven. A dutch battalion plus the base force hold the town so I have some hopes of delaying the invasion of Sumatra here.

China: An attack at Changsha went well and forced a tank regiment to retreat while an armored car coy was outright destroyed. 69/90 vehicles will not be coming back. Thankfully the infantry still hasn't reached the city though I guess once they arrive they'll bring enough friends to stay.

SW Pacific: The IJN sub menace continues to enjoy success through the sinking of AG Regulus. A few depth charge attacks did disturb the local wildlife but nothing else.

The SSD and a SNLF marched into the jungle to take out the former PM garrison. Also a new unit was landed at Milne Bay, tightening the empire's hold on New Guinea.

With the conquests of Rabaul, PM, Noumea, Luganville and Lunga this area is firmly under imperial control for now.

Terror from the Deep...

Post by Rainer79 »

Jan. 9th + 10th, 1942:

Sub Warfare: The IJN continues to terrorize the allied merchant marines. First I-16 and I-25 sink AP Barnett off Brisbane, killing the bulk of a EAB. Then I-8 sinks AKV Kittyhawk and 25 P-40Es 2 hexes off San Francisco. That did hurt a bit. Never mind the fact that there are 3 ASW TFs and multiple seaplanes watching for subs in the area... [:(]

China: The IJA 104th Division took an empty Kukong which makes Kanhsien pretty untenable now. Also ~1500 AV entered Changsha which seems to be the main focus of the imperial attention now. The offensive in the north seems to have stalled however and quite a few of units have been spotted moving SW.

Malaya: The idea of defending the line Kuala Lumpur - Temuleoh (sp?) is apparently not a good one even against limited Japanese forces. You gotta love early war allied adjusted AVs... [:(]

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 30260 troops, 228 guns, 159 vehicles, Assault Value = 808

Defending force 11284 troops, 48 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 393

Japanese adjusted assault: 567

Allied adjusted defense: 253

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2

It is not looking good for the Indian Division at Temeluoh as it is in serious danger of getting encircled if Kuala Lumpur falls.

Trying to delay outside of Singapore is not working but running for Singapore is not good either as massed artillery will simply kill you there instead. *sigh*

Jan. 11th + 12th, 1942:

Sub Warfare: For once the IJN subs missed their attacks. One of their minelaying boats had left a few presents at Suva though.

At least the allied boats are starting to get attacks again. Near Takao SS-39 hit xAK Shinyubari Maru with a single fish but without any heavy damage or fires reported I doubt that the damage is lethal.

DEI: A PT boat raid against Kendari came off nicely. 6 dutch boats squared off against 4 IJN DDs and sank Inazuma with MG fire and a torpedo hit. [:D]

A big cruiser TF (8 CA + 4 CL) shelled Oosthaven but the damage was minimal. The IJA will have to land a bigger unit to take the base and gain a foothold on Sumatra.

On Java the dutch stack was retreated into the mountains. The remaining combat power is minimal, never mind the fact that there aren't even trails to get out of the hex quickly. Everybody that can carry a stick will make his way to Soerabaja for the final stand...

Malaya: Kuala Lumpur fell to a second 3:1 attack on the 11th. One of the defending battalions surrendered while the other forces were simply pushed back. *sigh*
In AE disruption seems to be much reduced for the attacker compared to the original game.

I am still somewhat hopeful that the cut-off troops can make Singapore though probably not without suffering a forced retreat in the process.

Jan. 13th + 14th, 1942:

DEI: A Nav Gd and base force have joined the engineering regiment at Oosthaven. The IJA now has a 2:1 advantage which will probably prove enough.

Sub Warfare: KV Chilliwack heavily damages I-6 outside of SF Bay with 2 direct hits. Yeah. [:)] Hopefully the sub won't make it home.

Near Pescadores S-39 scored a hit on xAKL Hokuhi Maru. All in all, I am pleased with the performance of the Silent Service so far. Firing any substandard commanders (and there are a lot of them) early really helps. I have also noticed there were quite a few subs with good skippers but a different officer (with atrocious ratings) in command of the TF. So, look for them and disband the TF to get the better commander for free.

I-25 and I-15 then proceed to sink 2 AKs out of an ill-fated supply convoy to Brisbane (for further carnage see below). I-16 then hits a mine at the port and shows up in the sunk ship list (not that I believe it).

SW Pacific: KB makes an appearance again! This time it decloaks a few hexes off Brisbane and whacks the survivors of the resupply convoy. A further 4 AKs and 3 escorts go down. The presence of at least 3 CVs and 1 CVL has been confirmed and there appears to be a strong SAG and ASW TF accompanying the carriers. The fleet is heading SW and I guess I'll find out soon enough what they are up to. The remaining traffic in the area has been dispersed and re-routed so hopefully further pickings will be slim.

Somewhat anti-climatic is a landing at Shortlands in comparison.

Invasion Down Under?!

Post by Rainer79 »

Jan 15th + 16th, 1942:

Brisbane: After announcing its presence in the waters around Brisbane, the KB detached its escorting SAGs and bombarded the base. 6 BBs were more than enough to flatten the airbase in one single strike though CAs kept it closed for good measure on the 16th. A small AK was also destroyed in the port with several more damaged but they are small fry.

The only bright spot is that 3 DDs are claimed to have hit mines while 2 DMS have received shell hits from CD guns. Seawolf attacked two damaged DDs heading north but missed both times. [:(]

What is interesting is the appearance of at least one transport TF off the base (see screenshot). I do know that there is a single uncommitted (after the invasion of PM) IJA division in the area but that would be awfully light for a full invasion. The SSD is still in the jungle so it will take a while before it can join the fun. Though with the relative light forces on Luzon and in Malaya I am not taking any chances.

The doors of the carefully hoarded CW armory have been opened and all sorts of equipment has been released to the woefully understrength Aussie units. The brigades of the Australian 5th Division will handle the initial defense of the base which is sadly considered "clear" in AE.

My own carriers are sadly totally out of position and will assemble at Pearl to take on new aircraft and let some of the DDs upgrade. Then we'll see if there is an opening. If this is the real effort, there will be targets aplenty once they reach the area.

China: Lots and lots of bombing. The AVG is taking its toll but the IJA bombers still cause lots of damage and disruption. I fear what will happen once the AVG withdraws...

The IJA captures an abandoned Yenan and is now moving onto the blocking position one hex SW. I am keeping my fingers crossed here.

2 IMBs also cleared the eastern approaches to Changsha though at 2440 casualties the retreat was not too bad for once.

DEI: A strong cruiser SAG raided Sabang and took out a decoy TF of 4 AMcs in the harbor. They took the long way around Sumatra and it seems some sort of Mini KB is following them. While this is annoying, they will not find many targets in the area.

At least the British have one CV + Hermes available so any move north can be resisted.

Invasion Down Under!

Post by Rainer79 »

After RL had intervened for a while, things are heating up again...

Jan. 17th + 18th, 1942:

Brisbane: Elements of the 4th Division and the 16th Army HQ came ashore at Brisbane. After a bombardment by 9 BBs and numerous cruisers (which totally trashed the base - again) the IJA soldiers attacked the fortifications and achieved a 1:1 result which dropped the forts to 2. Despite having more raw AV the allied adjusted value was of course awful. More reinforcements are on the way although key units are starting to withdraw from the NE coast just in case.

The only good thing is that 6" and 5" CD guns shot up a number of transports. Hopefully some of them won't came back. In retaliation carrier planes sank the damaged xAK Steel Age which had tried to sneak away.

DEI: The enemy cruiser SAG sank the small AG Canopus near Nicobar and then vanished.

On Sumatra Ooathaven fell which gives Japan a solid port on the island. The enemy can now march towards Palembang. [:(]

Luzon: A first deliberate attack at Clark failed at 1:8 but still reduced the forts to 2. Due to bombing there is no chance to build up the forts again though. 4000 IJA casualties were reported together with 2000 allied ones which is a very good ratio compared to the other fronts.

China: The IJAAF has started to terror bomb Changsha, targeting the manpower centres. One day of attacks started ~50 000 fires but failed to do any lasting damage. Most of the industry there is trashed anyway and there are no plans to repair them.

In response to moving quite a few units towards Changsha I've decided to make some noise on the northern plains. While I don't think it will be possible to take bases there forcing my opponent to divert more forces here would be a good result.

Sub Warfare: This part of the war is at least progressing very satisfactory. SS Porpoise and S-40 performed very well. First the fleet boat torpedoed xAK Eiko Maru #2 and then put 10 4" shells into xAK Kimishima Maru.

Then S-40 scored two torpedo hits on xAK Somedono Maru near Takao. Later two more hits were achieved on xAK Kamoi Maru.

Strategic Surprise

Post by Rainer79 »

Jan. 19th + 20th, 1942:

Brisbane: To my complete surprise the IJN abandoned the beachhead here. They managed to get everybody into the transports again which are heading north.

KB (to the best of my knowledge) Kaga, Sho, Zui + 2-3 CVLs steamed further SW and sank ~10 transports. Not much I can do about that. Australia now has a decent number of fighters with the arrival of the provisional P-40 squadrons but their skill level is abysmal across the board.

Ceylon: At the same time (covered by Soryu + Hiryu + CVEs) two divisions storm ashore at Trincomalee. I barely got one turn of warning through SIGINT as the patrol planes managed to completely miss the convoys. The Catalinas' skill levels aren't great but with the dutch fixed in place there is not anything better available yet. I am thinking that moving out the Catalinas from Singapore immediately is required during future games.

This could get interesting. A Vildebeest managed to hit AK Kaga Maru with a torpedo and I am planning on sending in the kitchen sink next. Everything that can fly and has at least some skill will try to hit the beachhead. I am undecided on whether to send in a SAG but it seems that they cannot get into Tri from Colombo in one turn.

On the ground the 33rd and 38th Divisions face off against 2 British brigades of the 18th UK, a light AA regiment and the static fortress. Reinforcements are on the way from Colombo.

China: The artillery death star attacks started in Changsha. 2000 casualties in a day. So much for the myth that forts (at level 5 and building) reduce them...

Sub warfare: The bright spot of these turns. SS-38 and SS-41 sink DMS W-13 and DD Matsukaze respectively.

Here is the strategic map. The Japanese progress on Java has slowed (as at least one division that is hitting Trincomalee has come from here) but allied combat power is pretty much non-existing anymore there anyway.

Note that Wake is still in allied hands.

C(e)ylon Attack

Post by Rainer79 »

Jan. 21st, 1942:

Sub Warfare: A good day for the IJN as BB Mississippi was hit by 4 torpedoes on the way to Pearl. The ship went down making this the first capital ship loss of the allied powers. [:(]

The way the game handled this didn't help either. After the first two hits the ship was split off into its own TF leaving its escort behind so that the sub had a clear shot during the second attack.

At least the allied subs weren't idle either. The fuel carrying xAK Arizona Maru was hit once by KXIII and DMS W-18 was sunk by Swordfish. The IJN has to be hurting as it cannot afford these kind of losses in the long run but with all the recent bold offensives it doesn't look that way (yet?).

Ceylon: More TFs unloaded some smaller units (including base forces, a tank regiment and Yokosuka 2nd SNLF) bringing the total AS up to 1133. The first attack came off at 3:1 and reduced forts to 2.

Sorties by allied torpedo bombers found the invasion fleet and to my pleasant surprise the Hurricanes seemed to be able to handle the Zeroes. A later B-17 strike also got through relatively unscathed. In the end xAP Kamo Maru and xAP Hakusan Maru were hit by two torpedoes each which should doom those ships. xAK Kosei Maru was also hit with a 500 lb GP bomb.

Strikes against the ground units went less well with the bombers targeting a small Nav Gd unit and a AA battalion. The following first attack came off at 3:1 and reduced forts to 2.

Allied HQ now has some tough decisions to make. Trincomalee will fall, no doubt about that. 18th UK and the 3 Ceylon brigades probably won't hold Colombo with its clear terrain either. I could divert the first two brigades of the 6th AIF (and send the rest of the division once it arrives) but that might not be enough either. And if it isn't enough, then those veteran (and pretty much irreplaceable) units will be lost as Ceylon is a deathtrap. Decisions, decisions...

At least the airstrikes will hopefully continue to attrit the invasion fleets.

Rainer79,

just wanted post a short note showing my appreciation of your providing this AAR, which demonstrates nicely what an aggressive Japanese player can still do.

I'm curious to see whether the big jumps you opponent has made will turn against him, showing that AE does not support this level of aggression any more, or not.

Hold on ! In the end you'll win !!

Thanks. While this is the enhanced Japan scenario, I think that a similar strategy could also work in scenario 1. So far it seems that Japan can still do whatever it wants early in the game while the allies are short of everything and have atrocious morale and experience ratings - at least as long as you are careful about not triggering the invasion reinforcements.

Currently I am just trying to hang on and damage his shipping. Any ships he has to use for resource and fuel convoys - and Japan needs a lot - cannot be used for further invasions. Now ships sunk in December are also starting to show up as definitively sunk which makes me fairly optimistic on that front - especially as the sub war is progressing well. Once the sub bases in the DEI are closed, the happy months will be over but at least there are plenty of opportunities to cause mischief until then.

Jan. 22nd, 1942:

Ceylon: Trincomalee falls to a shock attack. One of the features I don't like so much in AE is that the defenders lose big. 2 British brigades went from pristine to absolutely combat ineffective in 2 days. Both are down to 50% of their TOE and one has only 3% of its devices active. At least in normal WitP you could plan for losses but now you cannot even allow a single forced retreat with the poor replacement pools.

The other thing I don't like is that any ships that would have arrived in Trincomalee are considered "sunk". In this case CVL Unicorn and a couple of smaller ships. More interesting will be the fall of Colombo when the IJN can claim 2 CVs, 1 CLAA, some destroyers and multiple smaller vessels. Most of these ships are scheduled to arrive in '44 or '45 and definitely should not be considered building at this base. I guess I can rationalize it with german U-boats getting a lot more lucky (and sending their Japanese friends the points for "sinking" them) but this is still a bad game design decision IMO. Thankfully Balbao cannot be invaded or 90% of the Pacific Fleet could magically be sunk...

In the air the Swordfishs and Vildebeests had a bad day as they misplaced their escort but still managed to hit 3 xAKs. With the Japanese in control of the harbor though they will likely be saved though.

At least the Royal Navy also was lucky as a Kate strike against a CL/DD group I've sent into Colombo harbor failed to hit anything. In any case their mission has to be aborted anyway as Tri's airfield has lit up like a Christmas tree.

Sub Warfare: The IJN continues to plague the sealanes off San Francisco. This time 2 YPs in a ASW TF were sunk.

On the plus side Swordfish scored a hit on xAK Toyokawa Maru as well.

China: 5000 casualties at Changsha today.... [>:]

I really hope 1.2 does something to address this.

Australia: The invaders are back, unloading this time at Rockhampton and Bundaberg. They'll like take both bases tomorrow.

RE: C(e)ylon Attack

Post by guctony »

Actually even I am a Japan player. I dont like the idea of destroying ships by capturing their Base.

Maybe getting half victory points for the kills and some postphoned alternative arrival would be more fair. Or the recapture of the base should enable the naval units.

It not a fair kill. last turn I destroyed Missisipi By SS attack. It was very satisfactory. In fact I will put two subs to museum in Tokyo.

But I think initial heavy destruction of allied units is historical. Japan soldiers probably cutting anything they see reatreat.

Well 5000 casulities in Changsha is a result of putting 100 000 soldiers plus supports units into city. When ever so much consolidation happens looses should be great. I think developers enforce players to engage in open land battles. Instead large fortress Battles.

Yea Brisbane was hard to swallow but why not stop at rockhampton.
