MARIANAS V1 LAUNCHED

Post by Andy Mac »

OK it ups and running attached to the link at the top is now a full scenario so its more or less done.

Its only playable v the Jap Ai and thats quite rough at present.

VP's are deliberately tough you have 60 days to load, land and capture AT LEAST 2 Mariana Islands.

I havnt had time to play test it and its beta but its there and its playable - I think.

Please try it and see feedback welcome

Heya andy,
ok Taking a look at initial setup. Patch 2 installed.
Kwaj and Rio not enough AV support available in both bases ... Tarawa has a nice compliment of Aircraft on a level 0 airfield and very low supply ... about 19 LCU's set to withdraw in 3 days ... many ships with no endurance (may hamper immediate loading from entry if there are base op points spent on Replenishing) ... No Avenger replacements in pool (either type) .....Starting airgroups on CV's need a closer look (some starting with 1/2 their compliment) ... Low starting amount of PP's for leader changing ... 2 Admiral Spruances in leader list (not that that's a bad thing) ... Large # of upgrades missing from ships ... low # of initial pilot replacements in pool (By this date in the war there should be 3 times the starting amount listed) ... 2 overdue airgroups in the withdrawal schedule ... That's it for my quick glance .....will let you know more after a few turns.

Andy: I played eight quick days, and noticed many of the things already mentioned. Three others:

1. There are about ten ahistorical RN T-boats in the scenario, based at the Pacific Entry base. Don't need them. In fact, I think the USN sub force is over-powered. All of those boats are "correct" as to time and place, but basing them on the edge of the op area instead of Pearl is going to give a huge ahistoric on-station time, and, given how underpowered ASW is right now in the base code, I think it'll be an IJN slaughter zone. I'd shade the sub numbers down by at least 1/3 and take out the T-class.

2. I don't know if it's something I'm doing, but I can't get Amphib TFs to load LCUs at the Pacific Entry Base. I tried several sizes and several different ship class mixes (LST/LSD/LCI), and the Load Troops is greyed out. In fact, everything south of Load Supplies is greyed out. I tried to make them Transport groups and that doesn't work either. I double-checked the LCUs were in the appropriate Op Mode for each type of try. I can load supply TFs and send them out, ditto Air, Sub, and Replenishment. Didn't try Surface or Bombard. But I can't load invasion LCUs. (I set target preps to Saipan and Tinian for everything I was trying to load.) I didn't check OP points, but I don't think that was the problem. I wasn't doing any other OP at Pacific Entry Base that turn except loading the Amphibs. As no one else has mentioned this I'm still wondering if I'm missing something obvious.

3. Weren't there ANY PBY units in the Marianas campaign? I don't know, but the Allies are pretty short of naval search. If that's historic, fine. I don't know. But it seems odd given the late-war date that none were forward deployed.

Appreciate the scenario. The Marianas is one of my favorite campaigns. Good Allied toys, but the Japanese can still bite.

Thansk for the feedback no idea why the T class are there I will remove them.

Re Sub Force maybe the Pacific Entry point isnt going to work. I will check it out when I get home from work tonight

I dont think there were any PBY units - I think they were using B24's but I could be wrong if someone tells me what to add I will add the unit.

Thanks for the feedback

FWIW, the second point--that LCUs won't load at the Pacific Entry--is the biggest problem.

I did some experimenting on a fresh load of the scenario. No TF, not a Transport, a Landing Craft, or an Amphib, will allow LCU loading at the PE base. Move that TF to Tarawa, and it can load troops. I started fresh as Japan, and I can make and load Amphib TFs at Palau. Looking at the base iinfo screen for the PE base I don't see anything that would prevent loading. It's size 9, etc. But if the scenario traps the LCUs on the start point, it's impossible to progress as the Allies. Something about how or where that new base was created is goofy.

Excellent. I know you like puzzles.[:)]

A thought, way out of my depth here, but you created "new dirt" for the PE base, right? I looked at the GC map, and it's not Canton Island or any of the regular dot bases so far as I can measure by eye. Is there maybe a problem with the pwhex file or something? The base "knows" it has ships and planes, and supply, and an HQ, but not troops. Is the "dirt" visible to the map code? Or, is it too near the edge of the mini-map? Don't know, just brainstorming here.

I think the easier answer - but a monumental PITA is going to be to move the entry base to be PH.

I didnt want to do it but I can.

With stacking levels I cannot use any atoll

Why didnt they do this for Saipan & Tinian!!

Wow, that is an overwhelming force. I would hate to see all of that coming at me as a Jap. player !

I'm not really clear on what you are looking for at this point. There is a lot of stuff at the Combined Arms Research Library on operation Forager.

And I assume that most here are familiar with this place: http://pacific.valka.cz/forces/index.htm

OK once again updated with a working version apologies

I moved the dtsrt point back to PH and added 9 turns to allow loadign and coverage of extra ground.

Aslo added pilots and fixed some of the fuel and upgrade ships issues (but not all)

More fixes to follow but at least the game should be loadable now
