I agree about the game atmosphere. It is second to none.

This really is a battlefield simulator (I chose simulator option so Im not sure how arcade plays out).

The lack of micromanagement is a godsend. Thank god I say.

and the pre orde rprice is 15% off.. under 17$ wow.. I found the demo tedious, and wonderful, I loved the ambiance but the jury really is out.. seems like a lot of game.. moving on the strategic map.. what to advance not in the active sim map.. all of which I think will help this title do soemthing we have been begging from CM and tow for years, link battles... I really agree too on the sounds... and the lighting as dawn cam along... I cannot weigh to actualy see how it performs as I could not get my head around watching German armored troops roll over my red infantry dudes.. in the demo.. so we will see..
I wil ldo a review of this side by side againstthe new TOW2(.5) Kursk and though they are very diffenent animals they both cover similar ground and it should be interesting...

I managed to win as the Russkies once!

The trick is to call a cease fire and keep your fingers crossed that the jerries take enough casualties to agree.

I played tonight and had my arse handed to me on a plate. I did take out three light tanks and four troop carriers and 40 men but was firmly trounced cand called a retreat which ended the operation.

I agree it can take awhile for the action to start but that adds to the tension hoping that they attack along the routes my anit tank guns are set up...sometimes I get it right other times Im flanked and buggered.

I tried the tow 2 Kursk demo and found it far more gamey and RTS fodder like. From the gameplay to the graphics and ambience it really felt like so many other RTS games....plus the micromanagement was a killer for me the unit load became way to much.

Game looks cool.. but the controls are strange and not easy to work... I hate how when you click on the mini map, it spins the view around...

I think I may pick it up though

I HATE the mini map...worthless. [:@]

Aside from that, the demo seems interesting.

I just got Achtung Panzer 1943 today, and I have been playing whole day. I have to say for my point of view Achtung Panzer is the best WW2 tactical combat wargame simulator on PC today. Achtung Panzer is to the WW2 tactical wargames on PC as what IL2 is to the flight sims on PC....it's a benchmark...the best $20 CAD I ever spent on wargame for my computer. The other great thing is if you buy it from GamersGate or Impulsedriven ... there is no DRM!!! :)

In one of the demo operation mission, I had 4 AT guns (but they only have few AP rounds each), the enemy tank platoon engaged my AT battery. Few of the tanks went straight against me...while others flanked me...I lost all the guns this way. Also watch out for tank platoon moving, I have seen one of the tanks standing still observing the enemy while the others move...cool stuff!

All the info Ive read about this game suggests that I dont really need to try the demo to make up my mind. These guys have earned my moneys and I hope they make more of games like this. The fact  that it costs only 17€ is kind of steal though.

Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943 Main Features:

* Great replayability and flexible AI behaviour: “smart” AI analyses tactical movements of player and chooses the best strategy based on opponents’ behaviour, rather than following scripts. It allows players to complete the same scenarios using different tactics as if playing with human player.
* Thorough re-creation of weapons, artillery and vehicles: all battle characteristics, including missile trajectories or number of crew, were modeled according to military archive materials and WW2 chronicles.
* Destructible environment: blast and destroy almost everything, from ground terrain to houses and enemy defences. All traces of previous battles (shell-holes, broken vehicles, corpses, etc.) are left on the battlefield until the end of the scenario.
* Real ballistics: bullets and projectiles follow authentic trajectories. Proper shot longitude, number of frags and their range are calculated.
* Real vehicle damage system: engine, suspension, weapons, aiming appliances can all be damaged separately, affecting the combat abilities of the vehicle.
* Real soldiers' behaviour: every soldier has some basic parameters, such as experience level, fatigue and morale that affect his behaviour and effectiveness.
* Military Encyclopaedia with 3D model viewer and detailed data on all units, describing their historical and in-game characteristics.
*2 control modes: turn-based strategic mode and real-time tactical mode

EDIT: Physical collectors edition coming in may for 23€:

I just digital downloaded from stardock. [&:] Those of you who are used to easy purchase and play at matrix are gonna be in for a shocker when dowloading for the first time from Impulse. Yea you get an installed game on your computer, but no file you can transfer to a DVD, and a whole lot of other crap installed on your PC you don't want. never again. Hope it works cause there aint no support for 48hrs. Lesson learned.[:(]

I bought it from gamersgate and it does let me keep the install files. I didnt notice any other crap. There was VC++ distributable but its just a visual C++ library file. The game works just fine for me. Havent had any problems (Ill go play it now).
