Just a warning, Harry, FOW is extreme. In my PBM I've sunk the Kaga and the Soryu, except that I haven't!

I'm aware of that!

I'm playing the Allied side, and I'm implementing the '41 version of War Plan Orange. My opponent is focussed on the ABDA area, which is giving me a free hand in the Eastern Mandates. It's turning out that the USN can move very rapidly into that area for the long term if it doesn't have to worry about the Japanese fleet. Interesting lesson...

I've stopped posting after action reports, except those of particular interest. The POA intelligence team has declared the Shokaku sunk again.

Kavieng bombarded and Ternate invaded and captured. Cabanatuan captured. The Japanese are having difficulty beating up a Chinese war area (HQ) in Hwaiyin. The attacking force, 26th RGC Temp. Division, seems less than effective.

US Fleet bombards Kwajalein. All defensive coastal gun fire is concentrated on the California, which survives. It appears the Eastern Mandates are weakly garrisoned.

Taiping captured.

The Prince of Wales took two torpedoes on the first day of the war, and I had been carefully sneaking her out ever since. I had just moved her into the Indian Ocean with an open track to Cape Town when a Japanese sub finally finished her off.

One Month Take (US Player)

Post by herwin »

If the IJN doesn't hit Pearl Harbor, it looks like the USN gets a substantial leg up on the return to the Philippines. Perhaps about a year. The IJA needs to be aggressive in China. Operations in the SRA appear to be about as planned.

Jan 7, 1942: aircraft from the Hermes attack Japanese shipping off Manado. That night, Force Z wipes out a major Japanese invasion force there. Manila falls on 8 Jan 1942. Clark Field holds out.

My opponent asked for a mulligan. He'll be running a Japanese AAR that I'll stay out of, and vice-versa. Strategically he's in good shape, but Japanese industry is apparently in serious difficulties. Summary of the exchange:

herwin: I don't know your strategic situation... It appears you're mostly on schedule, and you certainly did a number on my shipping in the Philippines. You should have reinforced that city in central China and avoided taking the KB too far into the NEI. You need to keep at least a threat at Truk. Increase your tempo a bit.

My last question was: does it appear like a Pearl Harbor attack is necessary to push America back on its heels for a year? I know I'm now thinking about taking the Eastern Mandates during 1942. The KB allowed you to smash Manila, but I would have kept it back around Palau to support moves into the southern Philippines and Rabaul, with the option to switch into the Eastern Mandates if the US Fleet gets too active.

His answer:

No switching sides. After learning how to play Japan I do not dare to switch !

The strategic situation is OK, could be worse in some areas and better in other, but basically I`m right on schelude in the important areas.
Rabaul was going to be invaded in one week by 144th Regiment + support units

You can think about the taking the Mandates in 1942, because I`m going to Manila again......

Will open a Japanese only AAR for this game. I think that outside input from more experienced Japanese players is needed.

herwin:

The American-only AAR for the next play-through will be called US Naval War College.
