Brief for December 18

Hong Kong fall today and all the British garrison surrender - My infantry casualties have been light also - with 38th division still being at 98% - this division will now go to 16th army for planning of Java operation - the 38th division will also be theater reserve for southern army till Java operation begins.

But Jon had already wiped my new turn smile from my face when 2 of his American heavy cruisers ambush the landing force off Nauru Island - His cruisers sink the old minelaying cruiser Tokiwa at anchor before she can get underway - they also Badly damage a destroyer and a medium size freighter which both sink later that night - But the destroyer leader Yubari was the star of the night by hitting and discouraging both the American cruisers.

Those devil B-17 fortress heavy bombers have hit the port at Takao again damaging 6 freighters this time - I have not been able to counter these attacks as my army air service bombers on Formosa have been busy supporting the Hong Kong operation - but now that that operation has been concluded they will set to night bombing Clark Field - until the naval A6M2 gain air control then the army bombers will switch to daylight raids.

I forget to mention that one of Jons Dutch submarines torpedoed support carrier Hosho off Cam Ranh Bay yesterday 17th - Carrier has bad flooding so I send her into Port of Saigon with 4 destroyer escort - this is how she is look today just out from Saigon roads -

Hello Tone... looks like your going OK, pity about the Zero production as that will cost you about 200 airframes overall I reckon. Also I really like your air loss ratio compared to his, so luckily you haven't lost that many Zeros.

Your theory about him building up Java is an old War in the Pacific strategy called Fortress Java. But I didn't think an Allied player would get away with it in Admiral's Edition. I think that the Allied's early airpower will not last long against your Zeros and Oscars, also I think they would have to over-stack their airfields in Java.

Brief for December 19

The British battle cruiser Repulse has slipped away down the Makassar Strait I think, a I-boat had sighted the battle cruiser moving south through the Sulu Sea. I sent 2 mobile striking force that was replenishing at Babeldaob in to the Celebes Sea to intercept the battle cruiser and her escort.

Naval A6M2 fighters flew another anti fighter sweep against Singapore from Kota Bharu today, they down 10 enemy fighters for the loss of 2 A6M2.

21st division is coming ashore at Lingayen on Luzon, and when this division is ready the 14th army will close up on Clark Field. My hope is that Jon has not concentrated all his forces on Clark Field yet, and with the 16th division moving down the west coast I can cut some units off in Manila.

Brief for December 20

Very quite day with only major activity being a army air service anti fighter sweeps against Singapore and the enemy lose 9 fighters for the cost of 4 of ours. Also army air service Ki-21-IIa medium bombers from Bangkok attack British naval transports off the Port of Rangoon, the bombers are not escorted and lose 9 of their number for no hits.

I now have I-boats off the American west coast and the Australian east coast, but apart from one boat using all its torpedoes to sink 2 cargo ships yesterday both coasts seem strangely quite.

Brief for December 21

A small tanker was sunk south of Shikoku over night, she was part of a oil convoy returning to Port Arthur after unloading at Osaka. Also over night R-33 put a torpedo into a medium size cargo boat off Portland Roads Australia.

The main news for day is morning and afternoon attacks on our transport convoy unloading at San Fernando by American flying boats and sea planes escorted by over 30 fighters. Army Ki-27b and naval A6M2 fighters intercept this strike but most of the bombing aircraft leak through, they sink a cargo ship and their flying boats badly damage fleet cruiser Oi with 2 torpedo hits.

Naval G4M1 medium bombers escorted by A6M2 fighters strike at British transports loading or unloading at Rangoon in afternoon. But despite the fighters fighting off the enemy Buffalo fighters, also all the bombers getting through and making runs no ships were hit.

Brief for December 22

Overnight I-2 torpedo a Allied cargo ship southwest of New Caledonia, but sinking is not confirmed. Also this night I-5 put 5 torpedoes into the a large American freighter north east of Hawaii, and this ship was heard to sink by I-5. Then in early morning I-153 in the Java Sea put 3 torpedoes into a small British steamer south of Toboali, also this ship is heard to sink by the submarine. So it seem a good day for my submarines, but I must admit that I do have reservation about torpedo usage.

I was very happy with my anti airfield operation over Singapore today, when all strikes coordinated correctly. First in morning was a anti fighter sweep by naval air service A6M2 fighters, they shot down 4 enemy fighters for the loss of 1 A6M2. Then another sweep by army air service Ki-43-Ic fighters shots down 1 enemy fighter for no loss. Then still in morning a raid by army air service Ki-21-IIa medium bombers escorted by Ki-43-Ib fighters find the sky clear of enemy fighters and does significant damage to the enemy airfield for no loss.

Also so today in afternoon naval air service G3M2 attack bombers sink the American destroyer John D Ford out side Manila Harbor.

Brief for December 23

Bad day for my merchant marine today as I lose 3 cargo ships. 2 of the ships sunk were from my Home Island resource convoys, which do not have escorts yet as they were being converted. My submarines sink a Allied cargo ship of Brisbane, damage a American tanker east of Hawaii.

Army air service fighters operating from Kota Bharu sweep Singapore again today downing 4 British fighters for no loss. But the Ki-21-IIa medium bomber divisions from Alor Star decide to have day off and go to beach, and not take advantage of fighter free sky over Singapore.

Brief for December 24

The 2nd division with a tank regiment and a extra field artillery regiment started to land at Cagayan today. This division will probably take the town tomorrow as the American force there is not as strong as expected, and will then complete the conquest of Mindanao.

Another successful day over Singapore today, with sweeps or bombing raid on airfield encountering no fighter operation. We will now endeavor to keep the airfields at Singapore out of action with successive bombing raids, and that should also keep the port closed for business.

The big news today was that I-15 hit the American heavy cruiser Pensacola with 1 torpedo off Coffs Harbor on the east Australian coast. The cruiser was observed to be damaged before being torpedoed, and this must be damage sustained in the engagement off Nauru Island. But then the cruiser was heard to sink after the torpedo hit, so it is suspected that the American ship had some flooding beforehand.

Brief for December 25

Overnight off Busuanga in the northwest exit of Sulu Sea the fast battleship force encounter 2 American destroyers, but in a confused gun and torpedo fight both forces lose contact, with no damage to either side.
Also overnight American submarines make many attacks on our transport and cargo vessels in Formosa, and Home Islands areas. But none of our vessels suffer any damage, and in most cases the attacking submarines were counter attacked my escorts, but no damage to enemy submarines is recorded.

In morning American PBY flying boats escorted by P-40 fighters attack our cruiser covering force off San Fernando. The attackers are intercepted by army air service Ki-27b fighters, but the PBYs brake through and manage to score 1 torpedo hit on the heavy cruiser Maya. The Maya is not too badly damaged, and can still make 25 knots, but she will have to return to Home Islands for repair.

The 2nd division took Cagayan today, but the area was only defended by an USAAF base force. It is Known that there are several enemy infantry units on Mindanao, so we will have to find and destroy these units before we can secure the Island.

Aircraft mothership Akagi has arrived at Kure dockyard for repair of torpedo damage sustained on the first day of the war. I am somewhat dismayed at the dockyard estimate of 95 days for repair of Akagi, as I was planning on no more than 40. An American Carrier force was sighted southwest of Pago Pago 2 days ago heading west, and is thought to contain 2 or 3 Carriers. It is my belief that Jon is sending this force to Sydney, then maybe north to Southeast Fleet area, or even Southern Resource area.

Brief for December 26

Action in the Java Sea off Kalidjati overnight when I-159 intercepts the old American carrier Langley. The Submarines captain elected to surface and engage the Langley, and had I-159 crippled by doing so. I-159 is now limping back to Saigon in a critical condition, having left the Langley badly damaged and on fire.

American PBY flying boats stuck again today at Aparri sinking a large transport off shore loading a naval pioneer battalion. The PBY flying boats were escorted again by fighters again, but we had no fighter cover of our own as it was deemed a low risk operation. 3 Minesweepers escorting the transport managed to rescue over 700 hundred men from the water, and these are being return to Formosa.

Our forces on the west coast of Luzon closed up on Clark Field, they will begin a artillery bombardment and scouting to ascertain the number of enemy facing them. The 16th division is 2 days march from Clark Field on the East coast of Luzon, and will close up with Clark Field only if the bulk of American ground forces are found to be there. If it is found that Manila is still strongly garrisoned then the 16th division will move on that City.

2 regiments of the 5th division occupied Temuloh in central Malaya today unopposed, these regiments will now move on Kuala Lumpur followed by the rest of the division. The 4th and 56th divisions will now deploy to Temuloh by train, and then advance on Malacca. Reconnaissance is showing that both Kuala Lumpur and Malacca have been evacuated by the British. But I am still keeping my advance concentrated, as Jon is an able opponent and I want no surprises.
