Turn 6 - Van Canh CIDG Camp

New CIDG Camp opened at Van Canh

On the 20th of August Detachment A-223 is ordered to secure and build a new CIDG camp at Van Canh. As Detachment A-223 is helilifted to the site they immediately take Gunfire at their LZ (Landing Zone) from an unknown sized Viet Cong force that occupies Van Canh. A-223 quickly pushes the Viet Cong back with help from a spooky gunship overhead(AC-47 Plane) and takes Van Canh and begins to build defensive positions. Detachment A-223 Pursues the enemy but they quickly melt away after the short battle at the site. Hopefully they won't return.

Turn 6 - Dak Sut CIDG Camp Attacked

Dak Sut CIDG Camp Overrun

Dak Sut CIDG Camp in a remote area of Kontum Province near the border of Laos have been attacked and overrun by a large Viet Cong force that is believed to have crossed the border from their base areas. The Attack came from two different directions and quickly overwhelmed Detachment A-218 that defended the place. The VC force that attacked consisted of a battalion and a company.

Battle for Dak Sut

CIDG Detachment A-218 took heavy casualties in the well coordinated VC attack. The CIDG unit will withdraw from the area and the camp abandoned for now. Here are the battle results. This concludes Turn 6.

Turn 7 - August 22nd to August 25th 1965

Turn 6 ended with the overrunning of Dak Sut by the Viet Cong probably operating from across the border in Laos. This turn will see the completion of Operation Starlite and there are two missions this turn. One involves the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division, the other is an ARVN mission to clear Highway 21. Here's the news summary for Turn 7.

Operation Starlite - Battle of An Cuong

Operation Starlite continues this turn with a battle at An Cuong between 2/4, 3/3, and 3/7 Marine Battalions and the 1st Viet Cong Regiment. Bringing superior firepower to bear on the trapped Viet Cong the Marines destroy the 1st VC Regiment and end the threat to their base at Chu Lai.

Operation Starlite - Aftermath

The 1/7th Marine Battalion takes over search and destroy operations for the Marines that fought the battle at An Cuong and finish Operation Starlite searching the Van Tuong Peninsula for anymore VC units in the area. 1/7th encounters no more VC in its operations the peninsula is cleared of enemy units for now. Operation Starlite is completed on August 24th.

Turn 7 - Operation Highland

Operation Highland - Reopening Highway 19

On August 22nd the 1st Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division is ordered to initiate Operation Highland. The 1st Brigade will move by sea and air from Nha Trang to Qui Nhon and join the 2/7 Marine Battalion there to reopen Highway 19 between An Khe and Qui Nhon and provide security for the debarkation and deployment of the 1st Cavalry Division. In the initial stage of Operation Highland 2/327 Abn Infantry boards helicopters at Qui Nhon and combat assaults into An Khe to secure the airfield there. 2/502 Abn Infantry and Troop A of 2nd Battalion 7th Cavalry move overland to clear highway 19 of any VC units. Engineers also accompany the troops to repair bridges and roads damaged by the Viet Cong. There is negative contact with the enemy in this opening stage of the operation.

Turn 7 - ARVN Clear Highway 21

ARVN Operation to clear Highway 21

On August 24th the 23rd ARVN Division and Task Force B of the Vietnamese Marine Corps (2nd and 5th VNMC Bn's) are ordered to conduct an operation to reopen Highway 21 between Ban Me Thout and Ninh Hoa on the coast. The ARVN units have negative contact with the enemy in the opening phase of the operation the road and bridges are repaired as they are cleared.

Viet Cong Spotted near Dak Pek CIDG Camp

A company sized Viet Cong force was spotted near Dak Pek CIDG Camp which is north of Dak Sut which was overrun on August 22nd. Detachment A-242 reported the sighting of the VC unit. The VC were moving north into Quang Tin Province. This concludes Turn 7.

Turn 8 - August 25th to August 29th 1965

Operations Barracuda, 7/65, Highland continue as well as the ARVN clearing of Highway 21 this turn with negative enemy contact. There is one Mission this turn which involves the opening of a new CIDG camp in Quang Ngai Province. On the 25th of August Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts arrives in Saigon for a second tour. Here's the news summary for turn 8.

Turn 8 - Tra Bong CIDG Camp

Opening of Tra Bong CIDG Camp

On the 28th of August Detachment A-107 is ordered to secure and build a new CIDG camp at Tra Bong in Quang Ngai Province. The camp is on Route 529 and is southwest of Chu Lai. Detachment A-107 secures the camp and finds no sign of the enemy in the area in its initial patrols. This concludes Turn 8.

Turn 9 - August 29th to September 1st 1965

Operations Barracuda, 7/65, and Highland continue this turn with little sign of enemy activity being found. The ARVN wrap up their Highway 21 clearing operation on August 31st. There are no missions this turn. On August 31st President Johnson signs a law criminalizing draft card burning. Although it may result in a five year prison sentence and a $1000 fine, the burnings become more common during anti-war rallies and often attract the attention of the news media. Operation 9-65 - Artillery Raid

On the 29th of August C-1 RAR conduct an artillery raid Operation 9/65 in which the guns of the 161 RNZA Bty are established in a temporary gun position 5 kilometers north of Bien Hoa Airbase.

504th MP's Arrive

On August 31st the 504th Military Police Battalion arrived in Vietnam at Qui Nhon. They will enforce military law, orders and regulations, control traffic and stragglers, circulation of individuals, and protection of property, handle prisoners of war, operate checkpoints, and route security. This concludes Turn 9.

Turn 10 - September 1st to September 5th 1965

Operations Barracuda, 7/65, and Highland continue this turn with little sign of enemy activity being found. There have been reports of increased Vietcong activity in the Mekong Delta area as there have been several sightings of VC units close to areas garrisoned by Government troops (ARVN). 173rd Airborne clears road to Kontum

On September 1st the 173rd Airborne Brigade sends 1/503 Abn and supporting elements to Kontum. There is negative contact with the enemy as 1/503 clears the road from Pleiku to Kontum.

Operations Talon and Venture - Search and Destroy

Between September 1st and 4th The 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division conducts two search and destroy operations around An Khe that are part of Operation Highland. Operation Talon and Venture patrol around An Khe but encounter no enemy units in the operations.

Turn 11 - News Summary

Turn 11 - September 5th to September 8th 1965

Operations Barracuda, 7/65, and Highland continue this turn with little sign of enemy activity being found. There have been yet more sightings of VC troop activity in the Mekong Delta this week around Rach Gia. On the 6th of September the 173rd Airborne Brigade will be leaving the Pleiku and Kontum areas and heading back south to Bien Hoa. On the 7th of September the 1st Brigade 101st Airborne division will be conducting a small search and destroy operation around An Khe, Operation Bayonet is part of the ongoing Operation Highland, they have negative contact with the enemy around An Khe. There are two Marine Missions this turn one will have ARVN support. Here's the news summary for Turn 11.

Turn 11 - Operation Stomp

Operation Stomp - Search and Destroy

Between the 5th and 7th of September the 2nd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment is ordered to conduct Operation Stomp north of Qui Nhon in the Ky Son Mountains. The 2/7th Marines are helilifted to two landing zones LZ Palomino and LZ Shetland. The 2/7th Marines encounter VC in the area and engage them causing a small amount of casualties on the enemy and the capture of 3 VC men. The Marines use CS (Tear) gas in the operation which causes some controversy. The Enemy contact is brief as they quickly disappear from the searching Marines.
