Most Boring War-Movie

I suspect the reason you guys didn't like Thin Red Line is because it actually described the real secret to winning wars: love. A love of your comrades sufficiently strong, that you not only transform from being an AWOL brig slug, but save your whole company via by an act of ultimate personal sacrifice.

I know we wargamers tend to be into the material issues like caliber size, explosive penetration, timetables, efficiency and zones of control. I admit I'm speculating here about something I have zero realworld experience in. But based on what I know, love I think is the strongest weapon in any militaries arsenal (apart from pure asymmetrical firepower, which would seem to suffice as a replacement for luv). Call it comraderie if you prefer (Esprit du Corps, perhaps), but I think there is no other word in the English language that is as apt at the L word.

If you meant Ice Cold in Alex you are just so so wrong, it is a classic bit of British cinema.

Then again I quiet like the Thin Red Line and Battle of the Bulge (though Battle of the Bugle sounds interesting - must be an American cavalry film or possibly the good old days of the Empire [:)] )

Agree with you though on Flags of Our Fathers - I've started watching it a number of times but haven't got past the first 30-45 mins

P.S. If Elizabeth could be counted as war film I'm sure we would agree that it was a classic based on the acting talents of the French ambassador

I think this is probably my pick. I am a huge Civil War fan but this moving just flat our bored me to death. Add to the fact that it is over three hours long...
It is not that the movie is bad. I would not call it terrible. It is just flat and lifeless. And the southern accents are also pretty badly done.

There was supossed to be a sequel about the last days of the war, but Gods and Generals lost over 40 million dollars so it was never made.

There was also another Civil War movie called Cold Mountain that was also incredibly yawn inducing.
In fact, I am having trouble thinking of any good ACW movies.

I actually liked Cold Mountain, mainly because there is nice sex scene in it with Nicole Kidman and I also liked Windtalkers even though Nicolas Cage is a weak actor.

although people say Tali-1944 is a snooze, but I like that one as much as The Winter War(Full Verison)
So maybe I am wrong on the two I listed.
 
I am waiting for the Russian Mega-Pic of Brest(or Fortress Brest) to come out..that looks like it may have slow bits, but other parts look great.

Alright, I have not watched that Pear Harbour movie everyone whines about, so keep that in mind, but anyway...

For the most BLANKS fired in a war-movie, I found AN UNGENTLEMANLY ACT to be the most boring war-movie I can remember.

It makes those european anti-war movies actually look GOOD.

I never understood how so many people claim that Eastwood film was one of the best Westerns ever....

However... I CAN understand those who nominate "For a few Dollars More" as top dog...

You would think there would be alot of very good movies about the American Civil War, but I can think of just three that are good:  Gettysburg, Glory!, and Shenandoah (the latter isn't on the same level as the first two, however).
 
Cold Mountain is a pile of bat poo.  I can understand that somebody might have taste inclined to enjoy it as a cinematic production - if one's taste is inclined to movies of the sort - but its Civil War component is unarguably atrocious; without redeeming value.

I thought A Bridge Too Far was pretty boring.  I must admit I formed my opinion of it as a kid when I had absolutely no clue what it was about.

Yes. It's a good MOVIE. But based on everything I have read, they only got a few facts really right.

William Wallace LIVED.

He was loved and despised by elements on both sides.

He was executed by the English under conditions much like those shown.

Other than that. Mush.

So, I would have to say that Braveheart, if one bothers to do the research about what REALLY happened afterwards, was one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen.

This is a photo of the battlefield of Stirling today. The bridge played a prominent role, as the English thought the Scots would be so foolish as to allow them to deploy fully to the other side before starting the battle (the English wanted to deploy to the side of the river where the battle ended up being fought...as they were coming from beyond the bridge in this photo.) The rest was a deadly rout and history as the Scots, under the partial leadership of Wallace, did not sit on their butts and wait. The bridge was thin by today's standards and did not allow many to pass at once, so redeployment was slow.

The large structure on the hill at right is Stirling Castle. This photo was taken from atop the Wallace monument. An amazing, Gothic inspired structure which you can see from the more places than you can imagine due to its height and unique shape.

I also believe it is doubtful if the "spear" trick used by Wallace in Braveheart was even used at Stirling as it was not even a defensive battle. Most likely, the screenwriters were inspired by the success of similar weapons at Falkirk.

Having grown up on the battlefields of Virginia (dad was the historian at Richmond Battlefield so we lived in the Watt House), I have always managed to overlook the long, boring interludes between a couple of excellent battle depictions (they did a beautiful job of Fredericksburg).

And they did get the Virginia accents down pretty good. I get reminded of this on a regular basis because my grade school principle lives nearby and he has an old school Tidewater Virginia accent - much like some of those in the movie.

I'm not familiar in detail with the tick, though I imagine it is a few thousand years old. The similarity that comes to mind is the SPIKE trick, which was used by the English against the French at Agincourt.  It seems indeed to have been decisive,  from looking at the lopsided results.
