There are many possibilities for publicity but if Steam offers this kind of free weekend deals (or even not free but temporary) than it could be used. Anyway, that is for Matrix to decide, I don't know the market that well but I think they are making a name for themselves anyway.

I love Steam.

Unless it's true about Steam taking a large slice of the profits, I too believe it's a major mistake for any indie game (DW being no exception) not to be on Steam. Games on Steam receive MASSIVE exposure - there are literally millions of Steam users.

If Matrix made a 'free weekend' deal on Steam for Distant Worlds (basically, a time-limited demo where users can play the full version for a whole weekend, open coupled with a discount to purchase of the game during the same period) the size of this community would quadruple, at the *very* least. There are thousands of gamers out there who would enjoy something like Distant Worlds but simply don't know the game exists.
I don't know why some people are pushing Matrix to get Steam. I hate Steam and i do not want Matrix to put this in the games.
And Steam take 30% which is industry standard all the Digital distributors do this. Though i don't know about Gamersgate because it is owned by Paradox.

I like the ways things are. Matrix has a good formula and a loyal following. Who needs Steam.

As i stated before if Matrix was to go for Steam then something would have to give so Matrix could cover the 30% that Steam take.
It would be a very sad day if Matrix went on Steam.

I buy Matrix games because of no DRM. And i also like to support the devs.

I will also be buying SR soon because of the no DRM.

Since 2008 it's a separate company.

I didn't know that. How ever i suspect that Paradox still has some strong links with them.

Nah... It's just that Space Rangers is considered a cult-classic, so naturally the SR means Space Rangers for lot of us. No offence meant towards Star Ruler here.

Also, agreed with Wozza. DW will probably do best in the long run when sticking with Matrix.

This is very true. I found the game completely by accident.

No doubt the game is expanding (hopefully exterminating as well [:D]) so steam or no steam is just a question of how fast is expanding.
I also like the idea of as much money as possible going to CodeForce and Matrix instead of others.

I read a review of the game, and a couple of months later I remembered it and wanted to check it out again. I did not find it, but a friend remembered more. Considering I am not sure I have ever played a 4X game before, it was quite random. It is not like there are reviews everywhere...

What stuck after the review was "good" and "private sector out of your control".

Too all,

Impulse by Stardock and Stardock have been bought by GameStop. This is Not good news for Impulse users like myself. Gamestop has Not supported the PC platform for sometime now and is console oriented.

As has been pointed out Impulse does have a problem with Firewalls AVG in particular. For example I bought in Jan. EUIII Complete with Napolean and In Nommine(sp) expansion packs included. They D/L'd and installed with no problem. But this last month I've purchased SoaSE Entrenchment and SoTS Complete and neither will complete their D/L or Install even with My Firewall disabled.

I've used Impulse since Gal Civ and have bought many titles thru them. But with this announcement that GameStop has purchased Stardock and that Brad Wardell is no longer involved with Stardock I'm severing my ties to Impulse. My last 2 purchases may turn out to be "gifts" to Gamestop if I can not get the problem resolved thru Stardock's Support team. Losing hard earned money to a Digital Download service is Not my cup of tea. And I do actually prefer to have a CD/DVD in hand than an internet account in some far away and "mythical to me" place.

This is why I like Matrix, I can get a Digital D/L and a Hard copy, and know that I'm working with honest and hard working ppl.

Just you're aware, your information is not entirely correct: Only Impulse has been sold to Gamestop. Stardock is still a completely separate company, and will continue to be owned & run by Brad Wardell.

That being said, I'm definitely not happy about Gamestop purchasing Impulse. As you pointed out, they're not exactly friendly toward PC gamers, and I'm very probably not going to be purchasing any more games via Impulse from here on out.

Unfortunately, that also means I might be done purchasing Stardock-produced games, since Brad has said they'll continue to use Impulse as their patch/update distribution delivery service. I just don't know that I'll be able to trust Impulse in the hands of someone like Gamestop. (And I was so looking forward to Galactic Civilizations 3 too....)

Btw, do we have an eta on galciv3? I know this question doesn't belong here, it's the only one I'll ask on this.

^ I doubt anyone has a clue, including Brad himself. Although most believe Stardock will eventually do GalCiv3 (Brad has said it's on their long-term "to do" list), there's as yet absolutely no indication as to when that'll happen.

If I were to guess, I'd say 2014 at the earliest. Probably later, in all likelihood.

Stardock are copping a bit of a backlash at the forums over the sale of Impulse. Many users say that Brad has turn his back on them. And they will not purchase anymore games through Impulse. Also some Devs have also taken games off Impulse because of Gamestop.

That's sad to hear, at the very least Stadock should offer an alternative to Impulse now for whoever wants it...even if that means all and the death of Impulse. [:)]
