Funny thing was that one DD actually was split off Force Z, guess what, that one managed to get to Singapore and that one was a damaged ship.

I am here with Castor too.
I must say that even after 3 years of experiences I find the TF movement still kind of unreliable.
On submitting orders I always worry where my TF ends at the end of day.
And usually it's in the wrong place in wrong time... [:D]

I feel that routing control with all those options [threat tollerancy, safe from air threat etc.] combined with different fuel factors [full refuel, tactical, minimal etc. i just wonder if they refuel on way and back] makes the game movement more complicated and it become more like "quess where your TF will be"... [;)]

Not even commenting on waypoints.
Try using waypoints to force some movement [say fast transport or surface raiders avoiding deep waters] and you'll sure get your valuable ships stay 1 hex from the target or [what is quite typical, or stay inside the waypoint at the end of a day].
Just ask crsutton, three last PBEM turns and two my fast transport convoys ended at Attu and Wewak under enemy air threat and suffered badly]
Trying to avoid using waypoints close to enemy because it happens to me all the time. [:(]
Guess I just take it with its face value and say: "Well, during war unexpected happens more often that expected". [:D]

And here´s the ac loss list of this turn. As you can see we claim a hell a lot of Zekes today, there must have been a lot crashing on their way home. If I had to guess, the enemy probably lost 20 Zeroes, which still is a great result as we only lost 3 H81-A3 in return as the Buffalos once more acted as training targets for the Zeroes. 140 Zeroes are claimed lost already and we´re only two weeks into the campaign and I´m very satisfied about this. What do Japanese players say about these Zero losses?

That hes already about to run out of good Navy fighter pilots in those units. 140 Zeros... Probably around 90 KIA and MIA pilots.

There are some units with good pilots he could use, like the A5M units in Marshalls and at Bedeloab and those restricted units in Home Islands, maybe 120 pilots in total but those HI pilots are not all elite... Initially those PI Zero units, 2 x size 45 units actually, have 45+10 pilots IIRC but Yamada Detachments in Indochina, 18 and 9 planes, dont have many extra pilots. The starting reserve pool has maybe 30 good pilots. If you still have plane reserves of your own and mortar doesn't discontinue his air raids or start using more Zeros and better I think you can expect the kill rate move more to your advantage until you run out of H81s.

thx, nice info. Problem for me is there is litterally no reserve of H81-A3 anyway so as soon as we´ve lost something like two dozen we are going to run out of reserves which is soon obviously. By then, I hope to being able to upgrade one squadron to P-40E and free some H81-A3 and soon later one squadron goes for P-39 which has overall better stats than the P-40E anyway. Biggest problem about this, I can´t upgrade them at Singapore as it would be more or less suicide to have a squadron being fully damaged sitting on the ground, slowly repairing so as soon as I have to upgrade, I´ve got to withdraw from Singapore.

another try, another borked NAVAL MOVEMENT... while the first PT managed to move six hexes during the night to engage shipping, the second one was also tasked to move to Vigan but FAILED to move six hexes and showed up during the DAY!!! Something that shouldn´t happen... a) because there´s no reason not to move those 6 hexes and b) with retire the TF should never attack during the day...

I try to tell me every turn not to use my ships to attack at all because I know just too well that naval movement screws it up too often (pretty much an AE thing though) and the IJN is so much superior to the USN and RN that it is a bad idea to engage them anyway, no matter if in 41 or 45, the IJN will always be worth two or three times the USN.

However, a comment on this. Yes, sometimes it just does not work as planned. I don't know if it is a bug or a design point. Let me say that about 80-90% of the time a TF will follow my orders or come close enough. However, I am quite satisfied if the game throw a little random chaos at me. It makes the game more fun to see the unexpected happen on occasion and actually reflects the reality of war. The game would be too boring if we could micromanage everything to perfection so I think it is to the game's advantage that at times the unexpected happens.

Sometimes a FT convoy should get caught in the open and plastered. It happened...

I have to say, I can of course be surprised in the coming months/years and he will soon start to dish out some crushing blows to me. If I end up being whiped from the map I´m sure my humble opponent will also have problem finding an opponent on our forum. [;)]

Well, sometimes the first months of the game are just too boring for the japanese side that even some experienced players "take shortcuts" and just agree on some level of stupidy for exchange with speed of expansion...
[If I were start another PBEM campaign that would probably be the may '42 campaign for the reasons mentioned above [;)] ]

and I just hope he'd have to learn and mature fast or... [:D]

Ah, Ark and I finally agree on something...[;)] My favorite scenario in WITP was the May 1942 start. It set the game on a more historical course. However, it is a handicap to the Japanese player as a good Japanese player should be well ahead of the map points defined by the May start. It especially limits an aggressive move in India as May of 42 is too late to move into India. It may also prevent the overrun of China by the Japanese player. But it does make for a more satisfying game.

our enemy finally switched to airfield attacks and nukes Clark Field... love to hear how UBER Allied 4E are when you see the IJ super heroe bombers sinking all and everything with torps or 800kg bombs and nuke bases at the same time... the level 8 airfield is nearly 100/100 damaged and it will take two weeks to repair it... no more fort construction ever here...

the Oscars can´t be seen much as a threat, they just lack fire power to be anywhere useful, even early days they suck... we had some more fighters damaged but easily achieve an excellent kill rate as many of the Oscars are sent home damaged and crash... still, it was a defeat for us today and our fighters are ordered to retreat... what I still don´t understand is our enemy´s tactic... one day with big sweeps and a hundred bombers attacking Singapore´s airfields would have ended our defense in... one day... the way the IJ attacked Singapore, it has cost them over a hundred Zeroes and dozens of Oscars... the AVG and the Buffalo squadrons have been flown out and will regroup and build up for the next stand somewhere else... fighter replacements are, ehm, non existent... [:(]

damn, I was confident enough to keep my bombers on nav attack as Mersing has got NO airfield... so the enemy easily LRCAPs Mersing from Khota Baru, some 9 hexes further North... and he does that with full effect, totally shredding our strike... the two Swordfish that made it through Cap were shot down by Haruna´s flak... [8|] the enemy didn´t suffer any other losses than the single Oscar...

the enemy advances with three tank units... what was the result of a weak force advancing on Clark Field and what did we learn there? I was thinking about moving my 1000av Army out of Singapore shock attacking over the river into Johore Bahru to shred these three units as the rest of the enemy units may well be a couple of days behind this spearhead... in this case, I thought it wouldn´t really worth it to counterattack and we just keep on building forts... being at level 3 I doubt we´re ever getting to level 4...

No update for a week because I had to do a new setup on my PC and Mr. Gates´ products proved to be a little more problematic than I hoped. One of the ridicoulos things was that when I downloaded the damned Windows 7 version it didn´t came as ISO so I ended up without a bootable DVD to start with. Even turning those files into an ISO DVD proved to be two hours work. Microsoft? [8|] After hours and hours of more problem (heck, I´ve probably done two dozen setups from scratch on my PC the last 15 years so that wasn´t my first time) I ended up having all running again, execpt that outlook 2003 obviously got a compability problem with Windows 7 as now gmail doesn´t work anymore, no matter if with firewall on/off or any of the other hundred tips I´ve found on the Inet. [&o] Ruling the IT world and having such borked products is a quality of it´s own. Now running gmail with Thunderbird, took me 2 min... oh well, back to the game.

Due to the new setup I´ve lost a week´s turns that saw some action, first me intercepting an enemy SAG during daylight with Force Z. Enemy SAG was earlier spotted by a sub with BB Hyuga being identified. I´ve thought BB Hyuga would mean also it´s twin BB Ise in the TF (which proved to be the case) but to my bad surprise, there were also three Fusos in the TF. End result again was that the IJ super Navy whiped the floor in DAYLIGHT with Force Z doing nothing in return. BB Prince of Wales went down after no less than 40+ hits. [8|] Unfortunately the routine didn´t even try to have my TF trying to get away from the superior IJ SAG which is one thing, the other one is the joke that my BB/BC failed to do any damage on the enemy once again. Yes, in DAYLIGHT. I shouldn´t complain, I´ve said it over a hundred times already during the last years, don´t engage the IJN other than by dropping bombs on them. DON´T USE YOUR SHIPS AGAINST THE IJN! The way this works in the game, the IJN is the best Navy in the world, ever single ship being worth three times a comparable Allied ship. That´s how it is, that´s how you´ve got to accept it. The problem of not having any bombers that drop a bomb being able to penetrate an IJN BB´s deck armor and Allied torp bombers being crap compared to IJN uber torp bombers will again see me facing those BB until the end of the war, just like in my last PBEM when hundreds of 70 skilled carrier bombers weren´t able to take them out.

The second and most important happening was the enemy assault on Singapore. After our counter offensive on the Philipines that forced the enemy to retreat, we were awaiting the enemy at Singapore. So what happened? The enemy crosses the river into Singapore with four small tank units that trashed themselve. What the heck? I really couldn´t believe it. Not only would that mean that my 1100 av at Singapore will kick out those tank units which would be a small victory, but mortar also kept the rest of his units marching towards Singapore. Now I didn´t know when they would cross the river which would give me the chance to counterattack the same day when those units would be totally disrupted from their shock attack and so I guessed they would do so right the next day when the tank units crossed as I´ve hoped mortar wanted to save his tank units. And that was exactly what happened!!!! [X(] I´ve expect to see at least 1500 enemy av crossing the river to assault Singapore as the enemy must be aware of my strenght there but all that was coming across weren´t even 1000 av that took quite a beating from the river crossing first. The chance to counter attack with a shock attack mortar offered us by moving in his small units the day before meant our attack happening right after the enemy Army failed with their attack. The result was astonishing, seeing the enemy with not even 400 adjusted av and us with nearly 1000 adjusted av, meaning the enemy Army was kicked out of Singapore suffereing horrendous losses! Hurrey! This uncoordinated advance has cost the enemy over 400 av dead with hundreds of guns and support lost too while we suffered not even 100 av lost with another 200 disabled, mostly within those small units that aren´t really combat effective. But this meant more losses to the Japanese already than a usual defense of Singapore achieves until it is lost and now the enemy has to cross the river again which won´t happen soon I guess. I don´t want to sound harsh again (I know I do all the time anyway [;)]) but what is my opponent thinking? Ok, let´s forget about the failed advance on the Philipines, this may happen if you aren´t used to play an experienced opponent, but now that advance on Singapore? Being kicked right out of the hex again killing off the equivalent of a whole IJA division? Together with WITP I´ve been playing this game for 7 years now but have never experienced something like this and I really have to ask about my opponent´s experience again. [:(] I was really pointing out that I was looking for an experienced player because I don´t want to end up spending hours and hours for the PBEM and the AAR to see my opponent quitting out of a sudden due to too many disasters so I can only hope mortar is tough enough to stick to the game and it´s only ground warfare where he lacks experience. Can only hope. [&:]

The third really interesting event was me again using my fleet (silly, I know), this time having a bit more luck as mortar either has screwed up something or was too careless as we´ve sent the light cruisers Boise and the highly experienced Mauritius with a couple of third line destroyers to intercept the invasion convoy of Koepang that had no SAG as cover. To my big surprise, we´ve first met an enemy CVL/CVE TF one hex South of Koepang (that TF wasn´t spotted earlier) and seeing an enemy BB in that TF was pretty scaring to me but in the end, being a CV TF meant bad news for the IJN and we were able to put two 6 inch shells into the CVL and another one into the CVE before the enemy was able to withdraw into the dark with the enemy BB wildly firing.

At that point I´ve thought it would be another fiasco already with my cruisers probably sunk during the day for no real damage (only sunken ships means damage) to the enemy but then anothe surface engagemet poppped up, seeing our cruiser squadron engaging the enemy invasion convoy that was only covered by a single PB. Both Boise and Mauritius engaged the enemy ships with their 6 inch batteries, sinking all but one small freighter and nearly destroying a whole IJA regiment. This was a really important victory for us as this means Koepang will hold a couple of days longer which is good news as we´ve got some major operation going on in this area.

We´re only three weeks into the war and we´ve seen the assault on the Philipines fail, the assault on Singapore fail and having the Koepang invasion being whiped out. How is this game going further?

This is one of those things I fail to understand as we were West of Koepang with the order to move West at full speed when the enemy came from the East catching my TF before it move out of the hex. How did that work? Having nearly no main gun ammo left our two cruisers opened fire with their secondary batteries hitting the enemy three times for no damage, Pope took a 5 inch from an enemy DD causing not much damage when our TF managed to flee.

oh how I love those routines related to ship movement... in the night the TF breaks off, retreats and does so to end up right in the path of the enemy during the day... have seen that a hundred times and don´t wonder anymore... [8|] the "we engage every single ship in a 45 mile hex 100% of the time when we´re in that hex too routine" isn´t making it better... as much as I welcomed the mid ocean intercepts, it turns out to be a wonky result as there seeems not to be a die roll if the intercept happens or not and that´s a problem...

Another thing I really have to question is this. Mortar had KB move down the Australian cost the last couple of days, every day spotted. Many of my TFs weren´t fast enough to get out of harms way but nothing happened the last four days. Not a single strike was flown against probably four dozen ships and surely weather wasn´t the reason for it as KB was never clouded in. this was fully expected yesterday already, nothing of value in Sydney as all bigger ships were moved out a couple of days ago, those xAKL couldn´t get away anyway so I´ve left them in port hoping for my flak to do something... my hopes failed as much as my flak did, NOT ONE enemy bomber was shot down... pfff... but hey, I should have lost something like 50 ships more the last couple of days, for what reason ever I didn´t... while KB is sitting off Sydney, we´ve spotted lots of enemy TF in the Solomons, I´m sure we´re going to see the invasion of PM soon...

only halve of my bombers are flying from Java and Kendari got NO fighters but lots of bombers on the ground... now the amazing thing: Kendari got NO ground troops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, but this is getting worse than an AI game! Recon shows 50+ enemy aircraft (probably 30 there) but NO ground troops. We´ve also got our Dutch units the hex next to Kendari, so even if air recon would fail (it never does and you get at least the icon for ground units), we would get the icon for just having our units in the next hex. we´ve tried to do our best to reinforce PM and to put some CD guns in place, in total there are eight 6" guns which isn´t a fleet killer but at least something to fire some shellss... if KB would have shown up 10 days later we would have a Aussie CD unit there with 16 additional 6" guns and some flak that was already loaded onto a convoy but I had to unload again with KB being in the area and enemy SAGs making it impossible to bring it to PM...

the enemy again crosses the river with lots of small combat units, including a lot of units that were kicked out already now suffering again horrendously IMO... the enemy loses over 200 av dead which makes it now the equivalent of one and a halve dozen IJA divisions DESTROYED in the assault on Singapore for I guess around 250 Allied av destroyed there, mostly in those btn sized units... our forts hold and the enemy is left with roughly 800 av against our 620 av after today behind level 3 forts in ok defensive terrain... can´t see how the enemy is going to knock us out in the next couple of weeks here... the downside is that our av won´t recover much as our small units are mostly destroyed and the rgt and div sized units haven´t suffered a lot of disablements so we won´t bring up our av much higher than 700 anymore... but still, the defense of Singapore was already the best I´ve ever seen in any of my PBEMs, but the reason for it not being my brilliant defense but a fully failed IJ attack which I still fail to understand... make the mistake to order a failed advance, why then crossing the river again so early instead of trying to recover first? [&:]

it´s so funny, this is one of those counter nuke bombardments... I´m deliberately saying funny, I could also say stupid because a week later we ORDERED a bombardment causing hundreds of dead in our lines while doing no damage, again clearly showing that COUNTER bombardment means your artillery is 20 times as effective as when it´s ordered to do a bombardment... sorry, I can´t be the only one actully noticing this, it´s so obvious it has to strike every player, not even those that call themselv experienced... it´s a flaw and it´s totally obvious...

the enemy unloads yesterday, does so for only one day (wonder how much supply those units got), the enemy gets info from my bombardment that I´ve got some 300 av there, he get´s perfect intel on which troops there are, he can probably guess I´ve got level 2 or 3 there (wouldn´t I have been so silly to forget building forts here right from the start we actually would have level 3 forts) and most importantly, it´s a jungle hex, so WHY ON EARTH IS HE ORDERING AN ATTACK?????????

sorry guys, but this is getting beyond having any sense at some point... doing some mistakes, ok, that can happen... doing them again and again? Heck, is that his first campaign? How could he beat his opponents that hard that noone is going to play him anymore? Don´t take this as a personal insult please but every couple of turns I´m only shaking my head as this just can´t be true... no support, unloading supply for only one day and then ordering an attack before bringing in reinforcements when it is 100% obvious the attack will fail?

as long as my artillery is doing such a good job at PM I´m really confident... at that rate it takes only five days to totally wreck a rgt... there are so many question marks about that invasion it just makes me wonder... no support, no recon, no airbases to support the invasion and KB sitting 800 miles further South when the invasion starts, no sitting nearby doing nothing instead of supporting the troops... too late anyway... evacuating those trashed troops is the only thing that would make sense to me...

[:D] and with all the training we do we´re already having more sorties per day too... it will take another couple of weeks until I´ve got my first fighter squadrons at the front, those will all get 60 air skill pilots, can equip five full squadrons already with four squadrons having all 60 air skill pilots at the moment... next step will be to pump out 70 air skill pilots and fill the frontline squadrons, then followed by training 70 air skill / 70 def pilots... if we don´t see an extensive airwar happening (I´m not planning to do that against the IJ at the moment) then our frontline squadrons all will have 70 air / 70 def pilots by mid 42 at the latest...

enemy keeps unloading at PM... seems like he wants to resupply those units there and stay in place... without support and sitting in a malarial jungle base I don´t think that is a smart idea if not heavy reinforcements are following soon... I´m not really familiar with the IJA units in AE so given the assaults on the Philipines and Singapore I´m not sure there are many big IJA units left to support PM... but we´ll see...

this troop transport was spotted three days ago and the Dutch were ordered to intercept it, expected destination Kendari which proved to be a good guess... unfortunately naval movement again proved not to be my friend and instead of moving 8 hexes in one day the TF only moved 7 so it took us exactly one turn longer due to the 1 hex short movement which meant the TF has already completely unloaded the troops... guess this finally is the needed air support for the enemy aircraft there... we haven´t spotted any SAG to cover the troop convoy and we weren´t really afraid of the bombers at Kendari because those would only be able to drop bombs (if not an air HQ was unloaded yesterday)... the result was pretty devastating for the enemy convoy even though all the dozens of US torps fired at the enemy ships were duds, only the Dutch cruisers scored torp hits... that´s pretty much all you can expect from the Dutch cruisers so they´ve done their job for this war already... the old US DDs are very valuable for me and will be withdrawn now to convert them to APD/AVD to have some fast transport capacity... I´m probably going with mostly AVD this time because lifting troops can also be done by aircraft so it´s the cargo capacity for supply and equipment that is needed the most...

omg how silly am I? Another nice prove that counterbombardment is 20 times more dangerous than ordered bombardment... go back a couple of turns in this AAR and have a look what happened when the enemy bombarded and we were counter bombarding with the exactly same units... the enemy did NO damage to us and we wrecked havoc within the enemy units... no change in units, no change in fort levels... facepalm for those that still fail to notice this after such a long time... IT´S SO OBVIOUS, JUST OPEN YOUR DAMNED EYES!!!

I don´t know why but it seems to me that land based CD guns got less effect than ship based guns... it takes something like halve a dozen 6 inch hits to really hurt a xAK while the ship would be easily sunk by that many hits during a naval engagement... I´ve had several xAKL being sunk by a single 5 inch hit...

we have abandoned Manila and the enemy is invited to take the empty city... so... look at what the enemy brings, a whopping 260 av while we´ve got no less than 1700 av sitting at Clark Field, it would take us three days to march 1000 av to Manila, hold Clark Field easily in jungle rough with a couple of forts against an enemy that hasn´t even advanced to Clark Field yet and what is mortar doing? He sends a couple of low value units to Manila together with a road construction co? [8|]

I could shock attack those units out of Manila again, being sure about better odds than I had when we kicked the enemy around North of Clark and when we shock attacked them out of Singapore before. At the moment I´m thinking I´m just not going to do it for the sense of this PBEM but that does more and more get the taste of an AI game when you have to limit yourselve not to take advantage of the AI shortcomings. But honestly, I just don´t understand it...

oh come on... this just can´t be serious... if this goes on like this then I really am going to throw in the towel as I don´t have any hopes to see this PBEM going a normal way so it will just be terminated anyway after some time... I dared to ask mortar if that wouldn´t have been a super optimistic attack when that attack failed miserably before with more Japanese troops on hand... the answer was that my way of playing is forcing him to make more mistakes than he´s used to... hmmm...

if Viberpool is reading this, mortar is from Poland too so perhaps you know him from the national forum he was speaking about. Does he really have any experience with WITP or AE? To be honest, it doesn´t look like. Not meant insulting, just pointing out the obvious and while everyone has started at some point, I think it´s just not a really good idea to do so when someone is looking for a really experienced opponent. I´m not against winning, the question only is how it happens and if the PBEM stalls after a couple of months then that is no fun either. [:(] Mortar obviously doesn´t overlook his mistakes but that doesn´t keep him from stumbling into more and more in just a couple of weeks. All that is related to groudn war has miserably failed so far. I´ve seen more Allied major victories already in these four weeks of this PBEM than I had in all those years playing before. One can hope for achieving a victory on the Philipines now and then, or at Singapore now and then, or at whatever place, but doing so everywhere is a bit problematic for the PBEM I guess.

that´s an interesting one... first because of the to me more than strange TF composition (this does look like a well known AI TF makeup), what is a TK doing in this TF, or that AMc and secondly because of this SIGINT we received today:

3/146th Infantry Regiment is loaded on a Japanese TK moving to Port Moresby.

And I bet the mentioned TK is TK Moji Maru of above´s convoy. [8|] So another rgt is being sent to Port Moresby and parts of it are loaded onto at tanker. What should I say about all this? I´m already more than excited of what really is going to land at PM to reinforce those enemy troops there that have reduced their own av to about 1/3 to what they had after initial landings. Perhaps there is much more coming in now, not really something I can do with KB sitting near PM, we´ll see.
