And so, due to the discontent within the group, they decamped from the Star, and made the onerous trip to the Rose......
Much beer was drunk and the earlier discontent was forgotten....and there was much rejoicing.

...until a flight of Heinkel He-111's droned overhead and dropped their load on the pub.

An old man came stumbling out of the wreckage and - totally shell-shocked - walked absent-mindedly down the street telling anyone that would listen:

"They've got the Rose an' Crown"*

* This episode was faithfully re-created in the film Battle of Britain.

I can remember when the film was released in 68 or was it 69....It was so long ago, but my father took me to see it when I was 8 or 9. I was struck dumb by the excitement, and loved the heroism and the pathos of the film.

On the way back from Coventry in the back of my dads Ford Zodiac, ( or was it Zepyhr, I can't remember!!), I shot down every car from Coventry to Bishops Tachbrook, with a kitchen stool as a machine gun.

What the kitchen stool was doing in my dads car has been lost in the mists of time, but it was great fun!.[:D][:D][8D]

Happy Days!!

Empire101 I think your memory is failing you - Pathos was one of the four musketeers....[;)]

Seriously though, great days indeed! The film was released in 69 and I remember being taken by my dad to see the film with my brother at the Odeon Hammersmith - I guess it must have been a re-run a year or so later as I would have been too young to remember otherwise.

As a kid I used to use my mums plastic laundry basket as my "cockpit" when playing Battle of Britain. I saw Waterloo around the same time - FANTASTIC - and lets face it, as a kid (apart from when kicking a football) I was rarely happier than when shooting Jerry or having a swordfight with a Frenchy!! [:)]

Of course.
And what with swapping 'War Picture Library' comics in the playground, with stories about huge muscular 'Tommies' and 'Joe's' fighting huge muscular Germans,
who generally only uttered the words 'Scweinhundt', 'Gott Strafe England', and 'Kill them all' etc.
Or Japanese with huge spectacles, buck teeth etc and who were forever waving swords and running aimlessly about and only had one word, 'Banzai' in their volcabulary.

WWII looked so simple then.

And then I grew up and found out it was'nt all white hats vs black hats, the good guys were sometimes bad and the bad guys were sometimes good.

The world was a far simpler place when I was 9.

I don't think that set was around then, but you could buy the farm house and the figures separately.

How did you know I nearly always wear a commando outfit to play WIF? That's amazing. Hopefully you don't know my other choice of costume...ahem

Warspites 'other' costume when not dressed as a Commando playing WiF.

Note an uncanny resemblance to Prime Minister Churchill.....
