Hetzer&Lobsteve vs. Korgmeister&CrushU
All of us on Hetzer-made designs. I don't remember the name of Hetzer's mount, but it was chock full of cannons, small lasers and SRMs...and alot of armour. K0rg drew a Rubbler, carrying Messon cannons around for the ride along with a couple Large Lasers. CrushU was driving a Howler with 2 Cold Light Guns and a Tesla Bolt as it's heavy guns with a brace of smal lasers for good measure. I drew a...doh! Another name forgotten...with 3AC20s and 2 large lasers (Hetzer says this Titan is so good that Larkin has added it to WS...I believe him. If you cycle the AC20s right it's just a wet dream).
Graveyard map, acid rivers, you know the deal. We had one big river cutting things in half. I think I was the only one to start on the south side, but I didn't stay there for long. CrushU and Korg did some recon from the top of a Big Hill while I moved north to meet up with Hetzer. We had a bunch of hills bunched at the center (well a bit north of center) of the map. Hetzer was tucked in behind these, and while moving north I could still see through a gap in the middle, so we new they were coming.
Around 200seconds long distance shots start flying. K0rg and I exchange shots while CrushU advances to the hills. Shortly after I lose sight of K0rg and start going at CrushU with the ACs. THe most notable shot is a 20 to the head. All this time I'm getting lucky, the shield is holding up. At this point K0rg comes into sight again, still near his hill, safely out of range of the AC20s, and starts lighting me up with messon cannons again. My shield takes damage...I don't like the sound of that, as CrushU is now free to seriously mess me up with that Tesla bolt. Hetzer is holding his ground out of sight when CrushU slips north out of site. I hide in a graveyard and exchange long distance fire with K0rg as Hetzer moves south into the open.
This goes on for some time up until CrushU reappears, smacks Hetzer good before laying into me with the Cold Light Guns. Hetzer gets in several turns of parting shots as he heads east to play with Korg. I lose track of them but get intermittent reports of 'Red CTs' through ICQ.
In the meantime CrushU and I are playing LOS hide-and-seek. We're two hexes away from each other but can only fire intermitently. He lays into my left arm with the Tesla bolt, after nearly overheating me with a previous Tesla to the shield. I've got his right leg nice and red by the time we're only a hex apart. His Left leg is the same colour and I'm worrying about that tesla recharging when I get another lucky shot to his head, ripping it off.
As I move to help out Hetzer (like he needed it) I find that he and Korg are slugging it out hand-to-hand. They both get their licks in, but the early damage to the center torso proves costly as Hetzer places another shot there and it's all over.
A well played game by all. It really came down to a couple lucky hits either way.

Hetzer's greatest ally in that match was the random number generator. My to hit average was a mere 45% but if the game was playing fair it would have been closer to about 70%.
Personally, I wish he'd had Neutron Blasters so my useless pilot would have got the treatment he genuinely deserved

Its seems a bad excuse to blame the random number generator for a defeat. I played hundreds of games and only lost few because of bad luck. I do admitt though that the rand() function is a weak generator. Its substituted by a better one for WS.
I could keep a fairly good hit/loss ratio in v1.4 netgames with rand(), so not all hope is lost Korg.
And your story about failing two jump stunts and passing the 28% skill check because it was harder is nonsense. NO random generator is knowing what roll is needed so the same check would have succeeded if it was a jump stunt again.

Korg, 1st you tick off Lady Luck and now Larkin? And you wonder why your luck is bad?
By the way, My PinCushion has 4 ac4s, 4 srm4s, and a LL. It can fire the srms and ac4s every one to two seconds
Not that I would use the Death of a Thousand Cuts on a fellow ToS Player (sound of muffled sniggering)

What can I say, Hetz. I have a talent, don't I?
Aaah well. I think all attempts to find a rational explanation for my rotten luck are futile.
Mind you, if you don't believe me, Larkin - feel free to take me on in a netgame sometime. I guarantee that you can still beat me even if you give me a 100 second head start and 2 level pilot advantage.
If you see me do something obviously wrong, let me know. But what flaws I make are mainly just newbie flaws you can set down to inexperience. I just have the most appaling luck at this game, that's all.

No worries Korg. ToS is a really tough game. Against AI. Against humans it's a completely insane and crazy slapfest of weird and peculiar things which seem to happen at random but are actually programmed into the game by Larkin for those who fall from his grace and deserve (in His eyes) to meet an untimely death over and over again.
If I were the sentence police I would arrest myself for severe runon without a licence.
Any way. I find it helps to make a printout of the manual, bind it in leather (human hide is actually better, but it's harder to tan), and get "The Book of Steel" embossed in gold on the cover. Then, before every netgame, place the book in front of your limestone altar (you don't have one in your home?). Kneel before the book, and bang your head on the floor three times while chanting: "All hail the wise and gracious Larkin. Speed me to battle oh ToS god! Make my aim true and my skill rolls always 1. All praise your mercy."
I like to sacrifice a small mammal as well, but that's optional.

Oh I just use what I can find around the house. Mice, rats, squirrels, the neighbor's dog, etc.
Or you can take a hint from GTA3 and just get 'em at www.petsovernight.com

*sigh*
Yes, I have printed the manual and read it many times. I have dilligently listened to the advice of more experienced players and applied it.
I just have rotten luck at this game. It's really nothing more profound than that. Sorry if I occasionally lose my temper after several obscenely imporbable runs of bad luck and try to blame things.

This is a sure key to victory:
Start the game and find the enemy. Now get into the same hex and then overheat your titan. Once it shuts down, press down ctrl+alt+del+h+e+a+t and you will have your heat counter disabled, meaning you can shoot your heart out without generating any heat!
And the try it with a mech with 5 or more Tesla Bolts in it...
Sure to work in Windows 9x enviroment :p

Half a victory.
Hetzer and Shelrith
vs.
Lobsteve and Tek-69
In Hell.
Round 1
Tek and I start out to the east in the 'plains' while Hetz and Shel are both over in the mountainswest. Tek and I begin a rush south where the mountains jut out so that we have some cover for our approach. On the way Shel appears, we don't get any shots off due to LOS, but now we have a point to move in on. Hoping to divide them we're rushing west when Hetz makes his appearance on a hilltop. The three of us exchange shots while Shel maneuvers.
Round 1 goes to Hetzer and Shelrith.
Round 2
Tek and I finally make it to the mountains. I wind up not having a shot on anyone and carry on forwards while Tek is still trading AC20 and 12 shots with Hetzer. While we're still moving forward Shel reappears and I toss some AC4 and SRM fire his way as he jumps forwards. As we move again Tek and I both lose contatact with Hetz and Shel. At this point we're at the base of some pretty big mountains with low ground all around them. We can see the top of the mountains but not Hetz or Shel who must be just behind them. Tek decides to swing around the north side, while I continue west around the bottom. As I get clear There's Hetzer ontop of a big hill. We exchange some pleasantries as I jump up and over to him, failing on my dfa and landing on my face. He gets in some good licks, as does Shel who is 1 hex NE of our position facing us, while I get up. Now the fun begins as Hetzer and I go hand-to-hand with Shel adding lasers to the mix from outside. Hetzer lands on his behind once but is back up before I can do serious damage.
Round 2 goes to Lobsteve and Tek-69
Round 3
Just when things are looking bleak for our hero Tek comes sauntering around the north face, lighting Shel up with his AC20s and knocking him down. Shortly after Hetzer takes another trip down himself. I knock out his RT at some point while Shel and Tek square off. Hetzer is back up with a 59/59 check. And Shel is back up as well firing away with the lasers at Tek. Hetzer scores a critical hit on my right arm and damages one of my SRMs, but my heat is getting so high it's all fists anyways. At this point my RT and RA are both red and I'm getting worried that Hetzer will never go down againwhen a left to the body knocks out his CT. Somehow he stays standing with a 2/2 check, but he's pretty much out for the count and a blow to the legs sends him down and disabled. We're getting ready to team up on Shel when all connections are dropped and the game is called.
Round three goes to Lobsteve and Tek-69
After a deliberation the judges decide that Shel probably wouldn't have lasted much longer anyways and award the decision to Lobsteve and Tek-69.
