Occured to me something similar to this, a bit worse actually 2 US DD vs 1CL+8DD = 1 US DD vs 4 Jap DD sunk, more damaged. When the US DD started to fire hit easily every jap destroyer so i believe the reason is only one:
Japanese TF begins to get underway

So never dock any TF near a combat zone.
