Sorry for attributing this thread to you. My mistake. The truth is I rarely if ever buy a game without thoroughly researching it. Normally I would hesitate to buy a game for $70 but in the case of this particular game, my expirence with UV has convinced me to buy it site unseen when it comes available. Both the game itself and Matrix's track record of support has eleviated any hesitation I may have had.

If they lower their prices to $50.00 for all their other games and $60.00 for WitP we will be in complete agreement and I will be right behind you in line!
Ah, yes, Gus, otherwise known as "Mdiehl with a degree in economics." Thanks for your explanations, snigbert and mogami. You are, indeed, wargamers after my own heart.
There's a certain amount of "fool" and "idiot" in being a "wargamer." You laugh at yourself, pay your money, take your choice, and live it up for all it's worth. Eat, drink, and have Mary ... er ... be merry, as the Epicureans might say.
The stuff worth having has been few and far between, and, even back in the late 'eighties, we had a panicky feeling that it was never going to get better, and it would all disappear soon. Remember trying to keep your C64 or Apple IIc alive so you could play just one more time? How did you feel the first time your Bomb Alley 5 1/4" floppy wouldn't work anymore and you had no idea whether you could replace it?
WITP for $69.95? I'm buying a piece of my life here, man, what do I care what it costs? Wait six months to save 30 bucks? I'd rather whack off my wiener and put it in a pickle jar with the body of Ted Williams (no, wait, he's frozen, isn't he?). Maybe I'm thinking of Adm. Nelson (no, that was a wine cask, wasn't it?).
Well, forget the whack off my wiener thing, then.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.
Lets put this into perspective. Computer games are entertainment. Going to the movies cost $9, so you could see 8 movies. Pro Sporting advents about $60-$70, so you could see 1 game. Theater $60-$80, so you could see 1 show. Dinner for 2 $150, so you could pay for 1/2 the meal. Cable TV $40-$50 a month, so thats about 1 1/2 months worth.
I started playing UV in May and havent stoped. Thats 7 months worth of entertainment and still counting. It was more than worth the $50. In my humble opinion WitP will surpass this. Then again if I am wrong and WitP sucks then of course $70 would have been too much to pay and I would be pissed. So is the game worth the cost. Yes if its good as I think it will be. No if its not.

Well thanks for the compliment! I don't know the man myself but from reading his posts I consider him to be one of the most well informed and articulate members of this little forum. He thoroughly knows his material, cites his references like a professor and forms very well constructed and logical arguments.
I cannot understand why there is so much resistance to his posts as he is right on the money with the vast majority of his opinions. I can certainly understand that he says things that you may not want to hear but to turn a deaf ear and label those we disagree with a pariah is the foundation of thought that leads people to fly planes into buildings. If you spent more time listening to what he had to say instead of disagreeing with him out of spite and pride you could just learn something. One day go back and read his posts again and you will see that like now you may be mistaken.
Originally posted by gus My expectation is that the price of these products, i.e wargames, should fall into line with what other wargame publishers charge for their games. As I have already stated their prices appear to be in the $40.00 - $50.00 range. As they have similar business models, products and markets their price structures should be similar as well but they are not.
Well yet us discuss the business…

What are the financial details between Matrix and 2by3 Games?
What are the development costs per sales unit?
What are the fixed costs at Matrix?

Morning Culiacan,
I would be happy to discuss this with you offline. This has already gone on for far longer than it ever should and all I have accomplished is to piss off the regulars. So if you want to continue send me a private message and I will respond.
I dont think anyone is pissed off, I think it's just a lively discussion.
You should consider the value of what you are buying. Why does someone pay $50,000 for a Mercedes when they can buy another midsized car for $15,000? Are you an idiot if you spend a lot for a BMW instead of a cheaper vehicle, or is there inherent value in a better product that justifies spending more? Are you a fool for buying a porsche because you love driving? Are you a fool for spending $20 extra because you love a game?

Is it worth it? Only you can decide that question.
Matrix will set its price. We will buy it at the point we can bear the cost. Free Market Economy, baby.
I will say that it hurt a bit buying UV hot off the presses in May for $59.95, seeing it retail for $49.95, and finding it on eBay for $30.00. But then I thought about all the enjoyment I have gotten out of playing that I would not have had these last 7 months had I not bought then.
The more I think about it, my biggest regret was not pre-ordering and having to wait 2 weeks for it to come...
If I really want a game $10 or $20 dollars more or less isn't going to make a difference. In the past there were times when I waited to buy thinking in a few months the game would go down $10. But you can be sure I had another game I was enjoying and that was keeping me occupied. I'm finding that these days a good game doesn't drop in price as fast as they once did. So its getting to be that the investment in time isn't worth the $10 saved.
This has been a very interesting thread to read. It highlighted several different attitudes about money. The choices made were not right or wrong. They were personal, based on personal priorities. The definition of value is different for each individual.
What concerns me now is the health of Mogami and pasternakski. Mogami I'm wondering if your anemic now. And, shouldn't somebody get over to pasternakski's house to remove all the sharp impliments.
The world has never seen a more impressive demonstration of the influence of sea power upon history. Those far distant, storm-beaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the dominion of the world. -- Alfred Thayer Mahan
I am not nearly the wargamer many of you guys are, but I am willing to pay the $70.00 or $80.00 the game will garner when it comes out even though this will exceed my gaming budget for the year since I am also purchasing C&C Generals and Larry Bond's Harpoon IV. The reason I am willing to spend the money is I like the UV mechanics even though I am still learning them. I am still in the 20 to 30 day scenarios so it will be a while before I venture out to even face a human opponent.
I missed games of this detail when SSI started their nose dive. WitP should be even better since I believe the creators will improve on the game based on our inputs and there own ideas. The computer gaming market more than most relys on feed back from the customer to survive. The best example I have of this is the RTS forum that has come down the pike the differences between the early C&C and the latest is amazing and most of that was from player input and I believe that the people at MATTIX are doing the same thing with the WitP/UV engines. I hope that they develope a way to transfer this engine into the European theatre and Perhaps into a 21st Century conflict.
Price means little when the game is good, the only time I complain about price is when I purchase a game which falls short of its billing and is not worth playing. You can't take the money with you into the next life so you might as well spend on something you enjoy while you can.

Now don't get your panties in a knot, but I have been "waiting" for Harpoon 4 something like FOUR YEARS now! I think that it would be quicker to get Matrix to modernize UV;)
Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh the WITP engine.. with modern ships..ahhhhhh
ok.. I just slipped into a daydream..
as far as witp cost goes.. I paid nearly that much for UV, considering the next day air shipping option. And I will gladly do it again when witp comes out.
heck, I would pay $160 today, just to get a beta copy! lol
I too have bought just about every wargame there ever was.. And I don't remember any of the publishers ever committing to and working so hard on releasing updates and enhancements. That is except for MMPG's where you pay an extra 10 dollars a month for that priveledge... Sounds to me like a one-time $80.00 charge is a real deal if Matrix is going to continue to offer us that level of dedication to their own products.
Sure part of me thinks every publisher should do this automatically for every game.. But then I remember games like Squad Leader for the PC (No not Close Combat, Microprose's Squad Leader from AH).. So bad they pulled all existence of it from their website.. No updates to fix what was wrong...No effort to improve it.. Just screwed all of us totally who spent 40 bux on it...
My vote would be to continue to enhance both UV and WITP..with UV becoming increasingly the lower priced "introductory" version found everywhere with a great and easy to use interface (that can also be a benefit to WITP)... then all those players would naturally upgrade to WITP... That would be my model for the series...
$70.00 = $45.00 game and $25.00 for great on-going support. Just look at all of the great support, new versions, new features Matrix and the gang added to UV.
Some other War Game companies would have tried to sell us a Gold Version of UV or expansion packs by now. Anybody remember TalonSoft who tried to sell us the favor of week versions of their war games.
