Rain in the north.



Luftwaffe continues heavy patrols in The Valley of Death.



The first attack across the river succeeds.



Efforts to attack at the mouth of the river fail.




At this point it is decided to evacuate Cosenza.

Rain the in the north and timidity in the south, so not much to show.



Turn 19

More rain, so not much flying.
Wait, that's a lot of Allied casualties...



Oh, apparently the Allied pilots decided to spend their off week training.



That's a lot of letters home...



Germans continue abusing the Allies for trying to cross the Crati.

Turn 20

The rains continue, but the Allies launch a new round of amphibious assaults, this time hitting beaches on both the north and south of Sardinia.



2nd FJ and 90th PzG Div are the only forces on hand with some security regiments. Reinforcements from Corsica are flown in and efforts are made to stall the advance.

I hope he brought enough units to follow up that invasion

also hope that SW landing doesn't get stuffed. looks like the fortification levels are well built up there - how'd you have the admin points to build all those?

Inland forts on Italian territory (which includes Sardinia) cost 1 AP.
In this instance I spent a total of 38 AP (8 ports plus 6 interior forts), but it is already turn 20.
Starting with 20 AP you can install the forts within the first month.

Turn 21

Some fierce counterattacks in both the north and south force back the invaders.



Made a mistake that was costly. I had sent the para regiment forward to scout (highlighted red above) and didn't place it back into the fortifications. I mistakenly assumed that if attacked it would retreat into the rough terrain. It did not, and that allowed the front in the south to be unhinged much earlier than it would have been otherwise. Lesson learned.

In Italy we continue thinning the line.

Turn 22

The Allies pounce on the weakness in the south, and break the ridgeline. This line should have held until the dam broke in the north.



Begin to withdraw in the south in order to preserve forces and to try and buy as much time as possible.



In Italy there is nothing to report. The panzers are refitting and we offer an axis of advance toward Taranto hoping to induce an advance we can attack.

Turn 23

Allied avalanche continues to flow forward.



2nd FJ Div splits up to garrison the ports in the southern half of Sardinia.

I lost my thumb drive for about two weeks, and so I stopped capturing images for at least two of my AARs.
This one picks up again on turn 37 - March 11, 1943
Sardinia has fallen.
The Allies remain stuck in The Toe.



This week amphibious invasions land on the eastern coast of Corsica.








Casualties:



Naval patrols flown over the invasion beaches.



Recon and interdiction over The Toe as well.




The counter attacks continue, with interdiction and over stacking ratcheting up the retreat casualties.

von Schweppenburg continues to taunt the Allies in The Toe.



On Corsica another invasion is launched on the western coast.

15th Army continues playing cat and mouse with the Allied armies in The Toe.



In Corsica the beachhead is expanded slightly.



3rd FJ Div has been flown in over the last two weeks and is able to contain the western beachhead.

Turn 40

Continuing rain the Med helps keep Allied flights grounded while our own shorter routes see some moderate execution and results.

A series of unsuccessful attacks are launched by units on the eastern beaches in a bid to link up.





An effort to expand the beachhead on the western side of the island meets with more success, but no Allied units are available to seize the ground.



The Fallschirmjaeger are redeployed and maintain the ridges overlooking the Allied landing zones.




In The Toe the lack of Allied attempts to move forward compel to make an ill advised assault against their fortifications (level 3).

Turn 41

The Allies make another landing, this time north of Calvi, but reserves are ready and the 91st Airlanding division is brought over to hem in the newest beachhead.
1st FJ Army is given responsibility for the defense of the entire island.

I had one game where my opponent chose to not fight in Italy. He took the tip of The Toe to meet VP requirements, but didn't even try to advance farther. I think we got into '44 still fighting over Sardinia and he quit.

That was me, and I was still learning how to amphib as the Allies. It won't work twice against an experienced player.

I don't expect to hold the islands into '45. Holding them into '44 is a pleasant surprise. It's more about requiring a sufficient Allied commitment (thus keeping it from doing other mischief), or punishing the lack thereof.

Btw, these are ac losses, not pilots. It still can generate a lot of wounded writing letters from the hospital.

Plans are to make training flights less dangerous.

Over 200 KIA, I presume that is accurate, and basically all of those from training flights.

Understandable. As it works now I don't waste planes and pilots on training flights when I can at least get some 'bang for my buck' by flying against the enemy.

Turn 42

Schlemm throws everything he can spare into counterattacking the northern beachhead. The units at his disposal will never be stronger than they are today.

The French and Canadians are pushed into the sea.



Units are shuffled back to the front lines.
