Air units should not suffer the results of artillery fire.

I disagree.

I'll explain more when I get home.

Helos normally avoid artillery missions (friendly and enemy) for a reason. As an example, if a 155 round strikes a helo in flight, its all over for the flight crew. Even if the round doesn't explode. Too much mass, going too fast, expends a lot of energy were it to strike a bird in flight.

Artillery landing in the vicinity of a low flying helo can damage it through shrapnel and concussion. However, this is not a high probability in the game. So, even if you get hit with arty, more than likely it won't do any damage to your helo. Yet, there is a "chance" so a good mitigation measure is to not linger too long in any one location that has enemy eyes observing. This also applies to other units in the game that are way more susceptible to arty fire like infantry and vehicles.

PUBLIC BETA[:D]

+1. A number of games release a public beta that is not official and use at your own risk:)

Although I have a lot to learn before I begin playing around with new stuff...

You could use the editors included in the game to quickly generate battles?

I could quickly throw together a package of random scenarios if you let me know what you're looking for.

Grim and I are thinking about trying out some PBEM. We'd like to start small, could you throw together a package of complexity 2 meeting engagements. Grim wants to play Israel so that would be one side, the other could be dealers choice. Varied Terrain would be nice.

Question: is it possible to use the random battle generator for PBEM games in some way? If not is this doable in a future update, then you could dial up anything for PBEM.

You bet, I can do that. Give me a bit and I'll put together a package for you.

The random battle generator creates some random scenarios, which can be edited and started as PBEM games.

I did a little write-up on Random Generated Battles a while ago for CS titles, with a little example on how to extend them:

[*] Developer Diary #2 - Having fun with randomly generated battles
[*] Developer Diary #3 - Adding new units with -X NoEncryption option

Hope you have fun with them! [:)]

for me since i don't really know the conflicts depicted during the game time frame that well a particular time frame doesn't matter, but a mix would be cool. Thanks for taking the time Jason.

I'll call these "Teaching Sets".

Each set will provide the same situation, but each situation will be for a different decade. This will allow you to see the difference in units and how they change over the decades.

Jason,

The "Teaching Sets" sound goo. You might want to add them to the first update.

I know this is not a big problem, but would be nice if the side of each player had a more descriptive name than "A" or "B"....sometimes my old mind forgets who is who:)

Understood.

In the meantime, one way to remember which side is which is by noting that in most scenarios, Side A is the pro-west side (UK, France, Israel) and Side B will typically be an Arab country.

Not the perfect way of designating sides. But there are technical reasons for this. In the end, we went with the best compromise.

In-game, after scenario's start, one way you can distinguish sides, albeit a clumsy way, is to open the Status > Strength dialog.

I'll see about maybe implementing a pop-up indicating sides and nationalities. Or some such.
