Ouch, a $9.95 fee to enter that forum. Is it worth it?

Cheers,

Yes.

Occasionally the Let's Play sub-forum is open to the public as well.

There's another great AAR that's ongoing, with lots of good historical commentary in that sub-forum - GreyHunter plays the game in real time, one turn a day, every day, starting on December 7th. He's about 1/3 of the way through his second play through creating an AAR in this way.

I've found two great long-term PBEM partners on the forum as well. The Grognard Game thread has a fantastic group of people that are strategy game buffs, including one of the developers of Command: Modern Naval and Air Operations.

I haven't updated it in months, so it's badly out of date, but here's a link to my AAR of that game:

https://forums.somethingawful.com/showt ... id=3739682

My opponent, Saros, makes a few key decisions that enabled him to blow through my defenses:

1) Manilla, rather than Pear strike, destroying most of the USN sub fleet at Anchor
2) Then bypassing the Philippines almost completely, isolating them and letting them rot on the vine. The troops that he didn't commit here he used to make a quick capture of Singapore and Palembang
3) Committing the KB to the DEI to make naval and air interference of his invasions impossible
4) Conducting an ruthless air-game, using his Zeroes to great effect in sweeps, only committing bombers once he has devastated my CAP

I've made A LOT of mistakes as well. I'll probably lose all of the southern Soviet Union, as Saros has managed to put 200,000 troops on 3x terrain on the Soviet rail line, and I can't dislodge him.

And here's a link to my opponent's AAR of the same game:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showth ... id=3739706

I haven't read that AAR of course, so please don't discuss any details from my opponent's AAR here.

High five, goonmate.

Re: is it worth $10?

[s]That depends on a lot of things, I think so. Of course, a large portion of the internet hates us, so there is that.[/s]

Yes.

Edit

Wish I could do a proper AAR. It just takes so much time, especially if you're doing a turn a day. In the beginning of the war especially, I can sink 5 hours into a turn, then another 3 writing up the AAR; Then of course, there is the cross posting to SA and here, which I feel I must do... which adds more time.

Sorry for the lack of updates, the game has been pretty quiet.

I'm not looking to change that at the moment, and am quietly building my defensive lines and logistic bases while I wait for the next assault.

December 30th, 1941

Sorry for the lack of updates and progress - my new job takes me out of town for weeks at a time, and I've had a terrible time gettin WitP:AE up and running on my laptop. I'm hoping that I'll solve that this week, so that Jacks doesn't have to wait weeks on my turn when I'm out of town.

Overall, the war is still quieter than expected. That means that I'm kicking myself quite a bit for not reinforcing the DEI, Guadacanal and other positions early in the war, as it turns out I had plenty of time to do so.

CentPac

Very quiet here, except for a small carrier raid on Johnston Island which my naval search didn't manage to catch before it hit, sinking a small re-supply TF.

NorthPac

Image

Jacks has invaded Petropavlovsk with two IDs, which will be more than enough to overwhelm my defenses. At least 1/2 of the KB is standing by 6 hexes off and bombing my airfield here regularly, which has prevented me from building any more forts. This oil and resource rich base will fall to Jacks within the week, giving Jacks a oil source closer to the Home Islands than Palembang.

The good news for me is that Jack's amphibious TF composition was less than ideal, which means that his invasion TF has stuck around for four turns now, and is getting beat up badly by Petropavlovsk's sizeable naval fort.

SouthPac

I've been slower in this game to set up my important lines of supply, so I'm working to fix that now. Supply is being brought forward to my island bases, and in the near future I'll begin to move significant men and materials from the West Coast to begin forming a defensive perimeter. I didn't do this early because I've been caught too far forward by the Japanese player before, and I didn't want to repeat that mistake. However, this game is moving at a slower pace, which means that I may have time to build a more robust defense.

Philippines

The Philippines are holding out quite well, with Jacks wary to move into my key bases on Luzon. I've used the time this has bought me by using my PBY units here to pick up isolated base forces and infantry units scattered around the Philippines, increasing my AV on Luzon by 500+. Both Clark and Manilla will be tough nuts to crack.

Dutch East Indies

Very quiet here. A patrolling carrier force prevents me from mounting any major amphibious operations to pick up isolated base forces here, but for now I'm content to build forts so that when Jacks does come calling he'll have a more difficult time.

Burma

Jacks now has an ID in Moulmein. I'm bombing it, but the Jungle terrain means that I'm doing next to no damage. Moulmein is only lightly defended, and will server as only a speedbump. I have no need to defend Rangoon, I'm much rather fight on the Imphal line, so I'm working harder to reinforce there than to make a fight over this less favorable terrain.

China

Image

My defensive line here is complete. Now I'll begin the process of moving heavily damaged Corps back to Chunking and perhaps even to India before the road closes to re-supply and train. Jacks and I are engaged in a low-intensity and largely inconclusive air war here, with both of us using second and third string aircraft.

Soviet Union

Image

I'm in serious trouble here. I didn't move quickly enough or in enough force to prevent Jacks from seizing an rail-line hex in good terrain, cutting off the entire southern Soviet Union. I have massive tank formations here, but for some reason they are getting absolutely wrecked by Jacks IDs. I'm now moving in significant artillery to try and disrupt Jack's stack here enough to put a dent in it, but unless I can do something quickly, I will lose almost the entire Soviet Union.

Sub Warfare

Very quiet on this front. Most of my USN subs have pulled into Pearl, where they'll undergo a lengthy conversion process to be able to fire a more reliable torpedo before being sent back out to hunt.

Air Losses

I am significantly ahead on this front, though Jacks has been able to sweep more successfully in the Philippines now that I have withdrawn my P-50s.

Naval Losses

No major changes here. I have picked off a few of his ships here and there, with no large sinkings. Jacks hasn't managed much large prey either, but he did catch a fleeing Soviet tanker and cargo TF with the KB before they could make it to safety.

December 31st, 1941

I now have WitP:AE working on my laptop, which means that the game should continue on a brisker pace.

In a setback for me, Jacks has begun using his Zeroes more aggressively in a sweeping role. Since the beginning of the game, I've felt that he was under utilizing them in that role, as there is not much in the Allied air-force in 1941 and early 42 that can stand up to them. I've tweaked my CAP over Manilla now a bit to see if I can get some better results than the 6 to 1 that I've been suffering.

I still had a small squadron of three destroyers at Kwangchowan, so I sortied them into Hong Kong harbor, sinking two DMS that Jacks' had stationed there.

Georgetown falls.

In sub action, one of my Dutch boats puts a fish in to a PB south of Saigon.

Ack! Just accidentally clicked into Jack's AAR. Clicked back out as soon as I realized where I was.

Is there any way to hide a post so that I can't see it? I don't want to accidentally click on that thread again as I browse AARs.

It's January 6th, 1942.

Still a very quiet game, with Jacks taking his sweet time on Malaya, in the DEI and in the Pacific.

The Soviet Union is still a boondoggle for me, as I've been unable to displace Jack's troops cutting my rail line. I'm bombing his stack daily, but it's in decent terrain and my bombers aren't the best. As I have the chance, I'll be upgrading to TB-3s when my pools will allow it, as I notice that those heavy bombers inflict significantly more damage.

I've had a lot more success in the air than the ground - two turns ago I turned a minor airfield into a crater along with a squadron of bombers caught on the ground, and now I'm working on Mutanking to try and achieve the same result.

In Focus Pacific, German surface raiders appear in the Indian Ocean. The AMCs can be annoyances, while the heavier combatants can be outright deadly. My naval search was able to find that Jacks had stationed a battlecruiser off the West Coast of Malaya, probably waiting until Singapore was captured to bring it to friendly waters. I sortied my combined CAV/CLV/CVL fleet to try and take it out of the game. On the way to their destination, Swordfish found and sunk a German AMC. I still managed to take the CB Admiral Lutzow by surprise with my Torpedo Bombers, but sadly only one Swordfish connected with a Torpedo, not nearly enough to sink it, but at least it will probably need to see yard time before Jacks uses it in combat.

Moulmein has fallen in Burma, and Prome will probably be next. I have some reinforcements on the water headed for Rangoon, but I don't know if they'll get there in time to prolong the siege. I have a small cruiser force here to bombard once Jacks enters the clear terrain of Prome. I need more bombers here to really punish him in the clear terrain, so I'm shifting some Blenhiems up from Singapore. Unfortunately it will be another 15 days until the American bombers that I shifted from the East Coast to Capetown will appear, and another two weeks until I can get them in theater.

Kwangchowan in China still stands. Jacks has cut it off with what look to be IJA infantry divisions, but the terrain is clear, which means that I've been able to use my French bomber groups to beat up his troops here - if he moves on the city, he'll do so with a lot of disablement. I still have a 3-strong destroyer squadron here that I use for small raiding missions, but the small port size means that they can't reload their torpedoes. Why Jacks hasn't come in with a BB bombardment group to finish off the destroyers and wreck the airfields here is beyond me, but I'm not complaining.

I don't understand his air game at all - he seems to be loathe to sweep. He did a couple times above Clark Field and Manilla, getting good results, but has now stopped. Why didn't he press his advantage?

The first two months of the game is always frustrating for me playing the allies, as there are so many bases I want to reinforce and resupply, but the lack of unrestricted base forces and the lack of escorts puts such a limit on what I'm actually able to accomplish.

For now though, I'm still waiting to see where Jack's major line of attack will materialize. Every week that goes by without him taking my bases is just allows me to dig in more and runs out the clock on his amphibious bonus.

Since I've pulled my P-50s out of the Philippine theater, I no longer have the ability to control the air here, and as a result, Jacks has been able to resume his operations. Recon indicates that he has 90+ fighters guarding the shipping that is now unloading in Northern Luzon, and I don't dare sortie against that concentration of air power.

Jacks anticipated my attack on Mutanking, and 60+ Zeroes were waiting for my bombers and escorts. While my sweeping Mig-3s flew before my strikes, the number of fighters that Jacks had on CAP meant that the sweeps weren't enough, and as a result my Soviet bomber force took it on the chin, losing 40 2E bombers and 30 bi-plane escorts in one day of fighting. I'd say that someone is getting sent to Siberia for that mistake, but all the Soviet troops are already there, so someone is probably getting shot instead.

I have a little better luck along the blocked rail line in the North, with my artillery putting hurt on the second group of troops that Jacks has managed to block the rail line. I should be able to force this smaller force off in a few turns. Even so, I need to do something to try and regain the initiative in the Soviet Union. Otherwise I'll be just reacting to every time that Jacks manages to sit a unit on the rail line to cut off my supplies. I'm evaluating a few different options now to try and throw Jacks off balance.

In the South China Sea, several TFs are spotted headed for Borneo, including a very small carrier group. This may be an opportunity if Jacks gets over confident here - I can bring a lot of Dutch level bombers to bear if I need to, and I don't mind taking the losses if I can score a hit on a flattop.

It is only going to get worse for you in Russia...The IJA is so strong, but it takes 2 months to get them into proper position to really put a hurt on you there. Just sell those troops dearly and try to keep a foothold in the North.

Conversely, you might do well in China with the focus on Russia so strong.

Jacks hasn't moved in China at all besides encircling Kwangchowan, so I may have some opportunity there. Any recommendations for possible targets? French Indochina? Hong Kong?

April 20th, 1942

Jacks and I are still plugging along, in what has to be one of the most un-eventful games I've ever played. Japan has been incredibly passive. I still hold Palembang, Rangoon, Singapore, Rabaul, the Celebes and almost all of the Pacific islands. I haven't seen a Japanese carrier for months.

Instead, most of the action is centered around the Soviet Union. Jacks had pressed hard in the north and cut off my rail line, but I managed to force him off the line. While I was doing that, however, Jacks punched through my southern defenses to Vorishlov. I still control Vorishlov, but it's an uneasy stalemate, with both of us having about 4,000 AV in the hex and neither of us being able to dislodge the other.

I'm prepping for a counter-offensive in the north, but I need to clean up the remnants of Japan's northern assault force first, as they can still threaten the rail line there if ignored.

Vladivostok has been the linchpin of the Soviet Airforce, and is a big reason why Jacks hasn't managed to take Vorishlov, as I've been able to put up a huge CAP over the hex. Jacks has recognized Vladivostok's importance, and now has moved to break my air dominance in this area. This is a significant threat for me, as Vladivostok is my only level 9 airfield in the area.

The Battle of Vladivostok

Earlier in the week, a large battleship force had forced its way into Vladivostok harbor, shrugged of the Coastal Defense guns, and pummeled my airbase, inflicting moderate losses. Because of Vladivostok's proximity to large bases where those battleships could re-arm, Jacks was able to cycle this bombardment TF every 3 turns. The bombardment TF must have been set for flank speed, as after the bombardment, it would always wind up too far away for my land based air to intercept it.

I pulled in my subs around the base and used them to mine the approach, as well sent them to patrol the likely approach vectors. My hope was that they would act as speed bumps for the TF so that it would remain in range.

Last turn, 4/19, the plan paid off, with the bombardment TF stopping for ASW action on the way to Vladivostok, and when it got there, it miraculously didn't bombard, instead getting tied up in sub-laid mines. The ships sunk screen claim that two destroyers went under, but I'm doubtful.

Despite that small victory, I was unprepared for what came next - the largest air raid the war has seen so far. Over 500 Japanese planes are sighted over Vladivostok during the day, and by the end of 4/19, the airfield is a mess, and 3/4 of my planes damaged or destroyed. I move out what I can.

On the morning of 4/20, the battleships return.

Image

A LOT of battleships.
Image

They devastate my Mig-3s, which are the backbone of my CAP. This is going to be a painful day.
Image

The air phase starts in my favor, with an errant Betty squadron arriving without escort. It is quickly taken apart by my CAP.
Image

Then the sweeps come.
Image
Image

Wave after wave of Zeroes and Oscars sweep Vladivostok, and my already weakened CAP is whittled down to nothing. By the time the bombers come, there are no Soviet fighters left to oppose them.

Over 120 bombers paste my airfields, and by the time they are done, airfield and airbase damage both read 100. Only a smattering of planes are operational by the end of the turn.
Image
Image
Image
Image

The raids continued throughout the day.

During the PM phase, my DB3-T bombers launch - they've spotted the retreating bombardment group. Crap - they're protected by LRCAP.
Image

Amazingly, the overcast weather allows my DB3-Ts to sneak under the CAP and make runs on the bombardment group.
Image

Musashi takes a belt-armor penetrating hit. Unfortunately, it's the only hit, and the DB3-T squadron is massacred when it climbs back out of the clouds on the way home, losing a full 50% of its strength.

By the end of the day, the losses are sobering. Over 150 planes lost in the air and on the ground, with an equal number to damaged to fly. I'll have to rail the majority of the planes out of the hex to northern bases where they can repair, as Vladivostok is unable to do so. With Vladivostok's level 9 airfield knocked out, Jacks may have a chance to push his advantage in the air here systematically destroy my other airbases in the south of the Soviet Union.

And that, my friends, is how you lose 1/3 of the Soviet Airforce in one day. If I was smarter, I would have moved all of my bombers out of Vladivostok when I knew that the bombardment TF was coming again - but alas, I am not a smart man.

Part of Jack's passivity comes from the air game, I think, which has gone very poorly for the Japanese up until the last couple of turns.

Jacks really doesn't like using sweeps for the most part, even complaining about how unreliable sweeps were the last two turns, where I thought they were incredibly effective in clearing my CAP away so that his bombers could proceed unmolested. This is a huge problem in Focus Pacific, as allied air power in this mod can start to get very strong if the Japanese player isn't sweeping aggressively and keeping allied pools low.

To my possible detriment, I've given Jacks my sweeping tips. This might allow him to be more competitive in the air and give him the confidence to move more aggressively on allied positions.

Vladivostok gets a reprieve today - no bombardment and no sweeps. Instead, a well-escorted bombing raid fights its way to the airfield. The results for the Japanese are costly.

Image
Image

It's a good day for my Soviet pilots:

Image

Well, at least for the fighter pilots. I send out IL-2s to try and bomb the Japanese airfields, but I'm rebuffed stiffly by Japanese CAP, losing more IL-2s than I should. Patrol pilots also have a rough day, being pressed into naval bombing duty off Hokkaido.

Image

In this game, I've been very cognizant about Japanese aircraft production, and I've been in games before where I've let the Japanese build up pools of fighters that I just can't compete with. I've tried this game to bleed the Japanese air-force every chance I can get. One of those chances is over Bangkok, where my P-38s can do good work.

Image
Image
Image

I have three crack P-38 squadrons flying out of Burma, and they go 4-1 vs Zeroes for the day. I'll take it. Tomorrow they'll be joined by my first use of Mitchells in this game. Four squadrons will bomb Bangkok, supported by these sweeping P-38s. Shutting down the Bangkok airfield is one of the steps I need to take in a large operation in this theater which will kick off next month.

Air losses for the day:

Image

This would have been a banner day for me if I hadn't of stupidly thrown away by MBR-2s and my IL-2s on ill-conceived missions. You can get a glimpse how badly I've punished Jacks in fighters - mostly due to my aggressive use of sweeps - and how rough the war has been on the Soviet planes as well. My Soviet fighter and bomber pools are exhausted, and I won't get a reprieve until June, when I get a new MiG-3 variant.

Turns are slowing down from Jacks - I didn't receive one yesterday, and it looks like I won't today.

I think this is related to the fact that things just aren't going his way in the game, and I'm worried that he's going to drop.

He almost broke the Soviet air force during the air bottle of Vladivostok, but he stopped his air campaign here. Just one or two more turns and I would have had to pull then entire Soviet airforce to the north. I've seen this happen a couple of times in this game - Jacks will be on the verge of breaking my forces, and then inexplicably pulling back, giving me time to recover.

I'd hate to lose a good opponent after months of play, but I understand his frustration, too, as he has made no forward progress in the game. I own all but one hex in Luzon, I'm pushing back into Moulmein in Burma, I own all of the Celebes, and the Soviet Union is a stalemate.
