I have the Kindle version and I'm about 30% through. (it's Christmas Eve). I hope this doesn't come across wrong but I'm pleasantly surprised. Many books of this genre are disappointing - thin story, wooden characters, bad dialog. Not so this time. The story so far is very engaging, and it's longer than I expected it to be. I'm enjoying the layout of logic behind what started off the Northern Fury scenarios.

After finishing the book I'll probably go back to the beginning and replay the scenarios. Except X-Ray Station. I've failed that one enough times already and after looking at the Soviet setup in the editor I give up :-) Not a criticism. Realism can make things very difficult.

Anyway, great job guys!

ultradave, no offense taken [:)]. Honestly I agree with you about a lot of what's been written in this genre since the early days of Tom Clancy and Larry Bond, with some notable exceptions of course. We definitely think our story is different, and I hope you agree when you're through!

Got the book yesterday and finished it off last night, for the perfect start to a long holiday weekend.

It was really neat to tie in the action in the book to games I had played. I did that! I fought there! I remember those choices! Lots of fun.

One thing that struck me was that in a couple of places firing artillery pieces were described as being surrounded by 'halos of ice crystals' or 'luminescent clouds of ice crystals' in the cold weather, which is something I'd not heard of before. Is this from snow kicked up by the muzzle blast, or is ice somehow precipitating due to the action of the propellant gases or shockwaves? (I tried googling for a picture of the effect, but no luck.)

I'm looking forward to the next episode. Same time next week? [:D]

Never seen that myself (one bit of training/experience I never had was northern warfare - mine all concentrated on jungle and desert warfare), but H2O and CO2 are both minor elements of combustion from the propellent, so if it's cold enough, the H2O at least could freeze out, maybe the CO2 as well.

Hay Andrew - its a thing! Being a gunner from the great white north, I've seen it several times. Mostly when posted out west on the prairies, Canada's version of Siberia! Conditions need to be clear and cold with no or little wind. Something to do with the pressure crystalizing the air - kind of fascinating to watch.

C2k - See post #16 on page one, good things come to those who wait [;)]

Ultradave - I think your frustration with X-Ray Station will be evidenced about 2/3rds of the way through the book...

The credit for the believable characters and great dialog goes to Joel, I often joke that he's the one that uses verbs [;)] and its not far from the truth. His craft with words and developing the depth of the characters is superb.

Glad you all enjoyed the book.

Hey Guys,

I got the book on Friday and would be done now, except my iPad stopped working for a day! It is a great story. Well done.

I have seen the "halo of ice crystals", too. It can be cold on the prairies!

I will be reviewing it on Goodreads when I finish it tonight.

Well done!!!

Yes. I did a lot of reading today and am almost done. The description in the book pretty much matches my experience at X-Ray Station.

Second observation after almost finishing and listening to some of Kushan's interview - you guys have a LOT of writing to do in the future to cover it all. This was very in depth and without spoiling anything - there is much still to come.

Just set up H-Hour to give it another go. Knowing that you are going to lose, and lose pretty big, but need to give a good account of yourself, helps.

Glad you enjoyed the book and that it has re-invigorated your interest in the scenarios.

I look forward to the review Mike - as I shiver remembering my days in Shilo!

Bart,

You and Joel did a great job. I was on the edge of my seat in the battles. Well done. I can not wait for the next one. Quit your day jobs and get writing! Seriously, it was great. I have left a short review on Goodreads and Amazon!

I look forward to the challenge of the Northern Fury scenarios - it will be neat fighting battles that I have read about.

All the best,
Mike

Outstanding. Wrote a 5 star review on Amazon. Equal to any other WWIII that I have read including "Red Storm Rising." I eagerly await the next book in the series and hope it comes soon.

Well, reading the book didn't make my experience in replaying H-Hour any better :-) It did, however, provide me with a much better idea of what exactly was happening instead of just blindly reacting to the myriad overwhelming threats.
