Thank you Alfred & All, the "1" key it is. Now I only need to figure out what the letters stand for. Some are pretty obvious, some perhaps less so. Here are some findings:

Clr - Clear
Jg - Jungle
JR - Jungle Rough
MT - Mountain
OD - Ocean Deep
Swp - Swamp
W - Wooded
WR - Wooded Rough

Add W- wooded and WR - wooded rough.

Or you could just look at the extreme upper right section of the stock map.

Cheers BBfanboy!

Actually I seriously think to move back to stock map from ChemKid Topo. The ChemKid map loops great but the coloration does not match well with the terrain letter overlay. You might think a hex is Clear but with the overlay it will still say eg. Jungle or Rough because it has a few tiny spreckles in it. Or Mountain and Jungle also look quite the same which is not helpful during game-play. So for a test I will switch back to stock map. Might also take a look at the other modded map options (eg Bellum Pacifica).

Another thing to look for on the modded maps is whether the shallow/deep water is clearly delineated. If they shade the transition over too large a distance it can be difficult to tell which it is.

Right, I'll keep that in mind.

Well after playing today on the stock map again, it definitely conveys much more useful information than the ChemKid Topo map, that much is certain. ChemKid looks good but that is it. Will still check out this Bellum Pacifica at some point.

I play on Chemkids' exclusively, it's soothing for the eyes. Seeing terrain is not a problem with in-game means, and you don't need to see terrain all the time anyway

I like Pacifica Bellum, it gives a 3D sense, you can tell the terrain better than some others, and you can differentiate between shallow/deep water. It's all a matter of personal preference.
