This is a rude awakening! I never thought of myself as an oldtimer at this game but I see my first post to Pacific War (the old one) was Oct 2002. This was after a multi-year break from PacWar, I think I bought PacWar in the mid 90's. Only good part of getting old is having time for a PBEM game now.

I think you mean "retardment" 8-) ;) ;)

It's amusing, but most I know have less time when they retire.

Been around this forum for more than 22 years which may qualify me as an old timer, but actual age makes me a young puppy compared to many other forumites. Retirement ? In 20 years or so...

Since every one else posted I thought I would too...

I was a young buck when I discovered PacWar in a gaming magazine - it did a huge 8 page article on it that I still have tucked away in a folder somewhere. Played it for years via Comp-U-Serve and such for email (for you new people this is many years before the internet) - I still have the original 3.5" disk I ordered with my parent's credit card. Then I went into a lull with college and such. Then I was looking around to see if they made a new version and discovered the forums right before they released WitP... I live in Ohio and Matrix was doing the initial release at Origins in Columbus, so I went there and bought the first five copies of the game. Came home, and overnighted 4 of them out to guys from the forums and I've been hooked ever since.

It's been a while, hasn't it. I remember hacking the PacWar data file back when there was no scenario editor. Had some friends back then that aren't around anymore.

Good to see you still lurking here Don.

I came here to get Pacwar, which was a while ago, and hung around on and off since then (Real Life does interfere a lot, on and off).

Hi Andrew. Glad to see you're still active.

It's hard for me to break the addiction: Flat Top; PacWar; Uncommon Valor; War In the Pacific; Admiral's Edition. But time passes and I must admit my interest fades a bit.

I have been looking at all the old Bookmarks for web sites that I thought we invaluable during scenario editing - so many of them are gone or have not been updated in years.

Having said that, a new game in the series would be interesting...

I'm still around. Played 2 full Campaign PBEMs. Once in WitP and then AE as it was released soon after first Campaign game in WitP ended.

Didn't look at WitP for years. Just recently checked in to see if there were improvements-especially support for 4k and widescreen monitors if I understand correctly a last beta patch is going to be released to support newer monitors.

I recently retired and co-worker who recently retired likes board games. Played Hannibal vs Rome and now learning Imperial Struggle. Friend is very interested in a Pacific wargame. I have Asia Engulfed and will soon get GMTs Pacific War. I just downloaded Vassal and need to learn how to use it.

Space for GMTs Pacific War is limited so Vassal seems to be the solution. Problem is my friend has a Chromebook and Vassal doesn't appear supported and WItP AE is probably not going to be practical on it. I told friend to just buy a PC or laptop and ask wife for forgiveness after the fact...

I may just end up seeking someone to play PW on Vassal once I learn both if my friend can't get a hold of a decent computer.

Just got Pacific Crucible from Ian Toll. I'll start reading it once I get through Masters of the Air and This Kind of War.

On the Tech forum, there is a program called Seabee which can help install the game with the necessary switches.

I started with Gary Grigsby's War in Russia and PacWar somewhere in the early 90s. I bought a 286 in 1990 and the rest is history (of course, I dabbled in AH, GDW and SPI board games before that). If I remember correctly, PacWar really was a good game that could be done in a reasonable amount of time. Not a bad alternative if you don't have a couple of years to devote to a WITP-AE PBEM.

Next I stumbled on Uncommon Valor at a software emporium in Siam Square, Bangkok, of all places. That renewed my interest in the Pacific Theater. I might have picked up WITP from a store in the U.S., but then definitely bought WITP-AE online as I was living here when it came out.

I wouldn't consider myself an oldtimer like Don or Andrew whatsoever. They might be giants. But I do appreciate their time and effort, as well as that of the other developers.

Cheers,
CB

I'm still hanging around, though lurking more than anything else.

First got involved when I bought Uncommon Valor: CftSP at Fry's in Concord, CA. I still have the CD in the garage somewhere. I can distinctly visualize the memory of picking it up from the store shelf, the store lighting, even some of the people around me, etc.

Been maintaining a persistent "real time" day-to-day campaign in WitP:AE, currently Jan 27 1945 as I type this, using Andy's Scenario 100.

I still scan the forum. I've been around since 'Uncommon Valor'. I had to change my handle from Ranger5355 when the Slytherin merger happened. I still play nearly every day.
