Question about Research:

Will the player be able to see all of the research fields and all the weapons/techs he can research throughout the game from the very beginning?

Or, will each additional weapon/tech only be seen/known once the lower level weapons/techs have been researched?

Personally, I prefer the second option where the player has a few basic research paths and will only be aware of the other research paths/techs, etc once he has discovered the earlier ones.

It also might be interesting to have a bit of randomness in the research, meaning that sometimes research might lead to a dead end or it might lead to an unkown discovery or field.

I think it would help a great deal if research wasn't just strictly linear each and every game.

Cheers!

It doesn't work like you are thinking (it's much simpler). Basically you spend research to increase the value of a particular unit rating (like heavy bomber ASW rating, or infantry ground attack value). When the research succeeds the value goes up one. Various factors impact how much research it takes to gain a level for a particular item/value.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Thanks for clearing that up Joel.

I wasn't sure how in-depth research will be. That sounds good for the type of game this will be :)

Sounds good. Will the "upgrade" due to research be for newly produced units only, or will all existing units get upgraded, too?

Everyone upgrades, but that's why the more units you have of a given type, the more research costs it takes to upgrade them.

Thanks for the answer, seems like a reasonable solution to simulating the cost of outfitting existing formations. I have always disliked the auto upgrade for free idea.

Can the Japanese Lauch a Pearl Harbor Attack? Or will the US be able to move their Naval Forces out of Pearl before the Attack Comes?

The first attack on a country that has been neutral results in a surprise attack bonus. Until the US is at war, it can only move supplies. Thus, if the Japanese attack PH first, they will get a surprise attack.

Joel:

Thanks for answering all our questions.

I realize the limitations and scope of the game, but we're all hoping to have as much added as possible :)

More Questions:

1) Is there a random percentage chance that Russia might attack Germany after June/41, if the Axis player delays its attack or appears weak to the Soviet Union? IE after each passing month (post June/41) the percent chance of a Russian surprise attack increases?

2) What penalties are there to prevent the USA from attacking other countries not aligned with the Axis, such as Mexico?

3) What benefits (if any) does the Axis player gain from capturing (closing) the Suez Canal? Would this interfer with Allied trade/supplies? What about Malta? What happens if Malta falls to the Axis?

4) What limitations have been placed on the Axis to invade Britain in late 1940 and throughout 1941? Does Germany need certain techs or levels of supplies and ships?

5) Does the USA automatically enter the war in Dec/41?

6) How will carrier battles take place? How many planes will each carrier hold?

7) Will there be amphibious landings and special rules along with a Marine unit?

8) Will there be shore bombardment?

9) What about airfields? Do they have a place in the game? Or is it based strictly on territory held?

10) Can factories be researched and built? Do these improve production? Can they be destroyed (by bombers)?

Cheers!

More Suggestions: [:D]

Hopefully there is one large panel where the player can toggle a multitude of options on/off, such as:

1) AI Bonus:

* Production bonus - +1, +2, +3
* Research bonus - +1, +2, +3
* Experience bonus - +1, +2, +3

2) AI Experience Level:

* Private
* Sergeant
* Captain
* General
* Field Marshal

3) AI FoW on/off

4) Special Japan Rule:

* Option for it to pursue Northern or Southern Strategy based on %

5) Special USSR Rule:

* Option to attack Germany after June/41 based on %

6) Special USA Rule:

* Historical war entry or delay based on %

7) Special Turkey Rule:

* Allows Turkey to join Axis based on %

Question:

Will armour have special breakthrough rules for penetration/Blitz?

Cheers!

1) Don't remember how we handled this. I think there is a point at which Soviets get to attack if not attacked, unless Germany does not garrison Poland sufficiently, in which case they can attack earlier.
2) It is usually better to trade with a country that only you can reach (Germany/Japan can't trade with Mexico since they can't keep a transport link). If you attack, you damage the infrastructure and have to expend supplies to fix it before it works for you.
3) Malta can op fire movement through the central Med and can base planes to patrol the area. Depends on what Germany wants from Africa. The Med is often shut down for shipping so it has to go around the horn anyway until the Med is made safe for British ships. Once this is done, it saves a lot on shipping.
4) No artificial limits on Germany. Just a lack of shipping, long range fighters and warships. Some of these can be built up by 1941 if the Germans want to focus on this.
5) No, the US does not automatically enter until 1943 (I think). However, that assumes the Japanese do not attack outside of China. US can still lend lease, research, etc.
6) Each carrier holds one carrier air unit (distinct from fighters, tactical bombers and heavy bombers). They can attack adjacent areas if they want. Although each type of air unit is different, they are considered composite formations, so carrier air units do have an air to air rating to account for their fighters, but they are best at Anti-shipping.
7) Yes there are amphibious landings, but there are no special marine units.
8) Yes there is shore bombardment, and artillery serve as coast guns.
9) No airfields, units are based in owned land areas. Unlike some other games, they can remain in other areas after their move on Patrol (thus they can patrol over water areas).
10) Factories can be built but not researched. They do change multipliers during the game for various reasons.
All understanding comes after the fact.

There will be some game options to choose from (we've already got some of the items you mention). Armor gets to move 2 (in certain areas) which gives you a lot of flexibility as you can attack the adjacent area with some units and then use your armor to move through that area into the next. You can always move through an enemy area as well, but the defending units will get op fire as you go through. Of course that may not be a problem for your tanks if they have a very weak force. Against an opponent with a lot of armor, you have to be concerned about defending your rear areas that are in reach of the enemy armor.

Thanks for the replies, Joel.

Looks like you've been earning your "pay" since this forum opened [:D]

Your replies have given me a far better insight into the game, and I will be looking forward to it.

BTW, what is the game's computer system requirements?

And will it be made available through your dealers in Canada?

Cheers!

Hopefully it will be available in dealers worldwide. As for the system reqs, we don't know for sure yet, but it might be as much as 512MB and a decent 128MB graphics card might be needed as well (unless you are willing to shift down to 16 bit art, which actually doesn't seem that big a deal to me).

512MB RAM and 128MB graphics card [X(]

Do any members on this forum have a 128MB graphics card?

This is a turn-based game isn't it? - hehe

Thanks for the info, Joel.

Well, I have a 128MB Card, and enough RAM. I am a little shocked to think such might be required to run a turn based game with all the "blingbling" on.

Should be a helluva looker.[X(]

You won't see enemy units until you are adjacent to them unless you have aircraft that can recon 2 areas out.

*cough*

512MB!, 128MB graphics!!

I strongly suggest you look at downsizing your game requirements unless you are aiming at the Doom 3 / Unreal 200x market!

What's the minimum specs please?

What aspect of this game could possibly justify a 128MB graphics card?
