Another turn, another few bases fall to mog but they're piddly little bases so far. kendari held out for a turn, but next turn it is all over red rover there.

Betties in the SRA at davao are hammering away at my fleeing ships and transports - they've got at least 6 so far. i am learning lots about the allied side - and will be far more effective the next time I start up as the japs.

I dont understand how Betty's can be operating out of Davao on turn two? Even if he captured on turn 1 woulnt he have to wait until turn to just to transfer them there and regardless shouldnt it take at least a turn or two to land enough air support troops and supply? I mean good planning is one thing, but doesnt these two turns seem hyper-accelerated even by Japanese standards? Are you guys playing multi-day turns by any chance?

Mogami:

Are your troop losses as high as they sound? As pointed out you have taken a lot of ground but are taking a lot of losses in the landings. Did you expect this?

It seems like you plan for everything pretty carefully, will it take a long time to get these assault troops back to effective strength levels after the landings?

Thanks for the ARR, a very impressive opening move! It sounds like a tidal wave. I think Luskan will have to be "creative" and unorthodox to make an impact early in this game.

The combat report has been changed now to reflect the fact that the losses being reported are not all "killed/destroyed" but actually represent "casualties" of which the large majority will be disabled/wounded.

So in a Nut shel, an Invashion force for Mogami, consists of the tr4ansport element (Transports and a couple escorts for antisub defense, and added AA defense, Followed by a Escort TF comprised of CA's and other ships corect? The Following Escort force would engage any atacking Surface action force right first?

Ahh.....now I understand. You can see my confusion, absent a follow up combat report for turn 3, I just assumed he was refering to the previous turn. Still weren't your Betties fatiqued and disrupted from the transfer? In UV you would have to rest the transfered unit a day or two before it was effective again.

You can still order them to fly. You pay for it with the operational losses. It is an interesting debate as to which is worth more. One can be pretty sure that ships fleeing the SRA are empty if spotted in the first 2 turns. The question becomes does pilot short Japan spend aircraft to sink empty ships. It is a value call that is rather tough to make.

Hi They are fine. I rest a group or two every day and introduce a fresh unit as well. (I've moved at least three fresh groups into the area in the last two turns.

Surface intercept mania

Post by Luskan »

Well sports fans, due to a bug that means I can't generate my own combat summary (a bug I think I caused myself) I can't post the combat replay. And of course there is no guarantee to how accurate it is.

However in my combat report, Mog landed troops at johore bharu. He had 8000 casualties and a bunch of smacked up transports. Then my bombers launched and put 4 or 5 bombs through the taiyo and gave her fire and heavy damage. Hopefully she'll be sinking soon. (unconfirmed).

Also, I had tried to make two mid ocean surface combat intercepts this turn. One of them worked, however my 4 dds ended up in a hex with 2 of Mog's CVLs (I thought they were transports!) just north of darwin. Well, his cvls launched kates and I took plenty of damage and my cowardly commander called it a day with 1 dd sunk and another damaged (what happened to damn the torpedoes???).

My second intercept didn't work - but did get my dds out of hong kong punished.

And then Mog pulled one off - his bbs intercepting the fattest, slowest transport group in the ocean off tarakan and blowing 3 sub tenders to hell (and more thana few aks). Was pretty ugly actually as they didn't have even a pretense of a surface combatant screen with them.

Enjoy this!
Mog paid the price for landing at johore bharu, with POW and Repulse attacking at night. The first round was fairly even and non-commital, then the task forces broke off, and then the japs re-engaged, catching my ships off guard, and put 2 cls and 2 dds under the waves (and damaging a whole bunch of others) and then all ships broke off and my ships re-engaged (gotta love those aggressive commanders) steered in by radar and caught the japs napping (they thought they'd finished for the night).

What a battle. Technically, it is probably a loss, with 4 or 5 dds on my side and 2 or 3 cls sunk (more than a few won't make port) but no significant damge to POW or Repulse, and POW put a 14 inch shell through the CS Chiyoda, and through one of mog's dds, whlie Repulse (I think? could have this around the wrong way) put 2 15 inch shells into the Kongo at about 5000 yards which damaged her so badly she turned turtle and SANK! Another 14 inch shell into nagato and the battle was done.

Mog sank the Pennsylvania at Pearl - I sank the Kongo at Johore Bharu.

Then, the retreating jap bbs got caught by my airpower, and being battered as they were, I got some more torp and bomb hits in. Gods I love this game.

Hi, You can't make an omlett without breaking a few eggs. 6 days into the war there are 1500 assault points of Japanese 60 miles from Singapore.

The first 5 days were devoted to finding POW and her consorts. I even had two diversionary landings up north to try to draw them out. Oh well.

Your taskforce was clearly superior but it shows that luck was on the Royal Navy's side that day. I can see why the IJN spent so much effort trying to sink those vessels. Very interesting AAR, thanks guys!
