Are you playing PBEM or against the ai? And are you sending your subs into areas where Allied ASW air patrols may find them?

Steve.

Against the AI - and I don't want to know what would have happened to my subs if my opponent was a cunning grognard! [:)]
And those annoying Catalinas have the range to search all the most important areas of the map (a smaller scenario as it is), but so far they haven't actually hit any of my subs, ASW TF's are the problem. There's a lot of traffic going on between Australia/Port Moresby and Noumea/Guadalcanal, and these were the routes I used to patrol with my subs. Now I just use them for minelaying, supplying my troops on Guadalcanal, and the big boats with Glens are useful for reconnaissance.

Well, the counterpoint is my post earlier, showing no Japanese sub losses in over 4 months. Seems the game is capable of considerable variation - which is all to the good, if you ask me. [:)]

One thing I have to mention is my PBEM games are mid 42. Thats 6-8 months of training for the DDs which started on map in Dec 41. Reinforcements enterwith higher skill levels. SCs are entering in the 50s. This has an appreciable effect on the ASW efficiency.

Reading all the posts at once and the picture seems to be, how you use your subs and where is the important bit.
I think its OK so far, against the AI Im using my Jap subs historical, glens for recon and early warning, other boats for supply runs, some in deep water.
deep water ones seem to do reasonable ( occasional loss), put a sub in an air zone or shallow water and its going to die I think ( which reflects real life)

In PBEM Rob and I are restricting ASW to a max 6 ship task groups (and night bombing)
Against Wobbly I intend to sink 20 subs day one, in Manilla harbour using KB, that'll solve the problem for a while[:D][:D]
