I had a strong CAP over PM this turn as two large TF's carrying troops and supplies are pulling into harbour. Toraq sent a sweep over, and the Oscars again acquitted themselves well, roughly handling my P-39's, although they had trouble actually shooting them down. You fight with the army you have, as the man said. Only I didn't design mine myself (trails off...hmmm, F4U's!!!). I guess I'll just have to pound Lae instead.

There's still lots of shipping at Shortland, including, no doubt, many cripples, so I'm tinkering with the idea of moving the heavies to GG for a strike, although first I'll have to move in another BF and more supplies.

Some the replacement pilots for my carrier sqd's are truly awful - 1/3 of the pilots of VT-6 have less than XP 40! Nip infiltrators?

DD Fanning sank, along with ML Ikitsushima and AP Kashiwa Maru.

OK, this is the plan:

1) Buna & Lae + minor bases are worth 750-odd VP. Destruction of troops there could add another 100-150 VP?

2) Geography favours me on New Guinea. PM is relatively safe, and any reinforcements to any of the above bases will have to be FT'd (labourious and not very effective) or suffer prolonged exposure to LBA's out of PM.

3) The bulk of Toraq's LCU's are at Lunga. I have to do everything in my power to ensure that they stay there. Lunga has a size 2 port, and moving large units out with any degree of efficiancy requires AP's. Hence I'm going to suppress Lunga with airpower. This has the added benefit of retarding development there, denying Toraq VP's. This is key to a the succes of Operation Backhand because my reserves are scant, having moved the 41st ID to Noumea. Down the road, SOPAC will receive the 43rd & 25th ID's, which will allow the 41st to be shifted back.

4) I must expect a violent reaction once Toraq realises what's up. He will then try to suppress my SOPAC bases, starting with Irau. The defence here is bolstered by a battery of 6" CD guns and 800 mines so far. However, he is still able to impose surface superiority anywhere he chooses with his five or six remaining battleships. He could even hit PM if he really wanted to. He still has carrier superiority, although I'm hoping (please, please, please) to receive the Saratoga. If I do, I won't hesitate to force a carrier battle. Those Junyo class CV's are really vulnerable, and hopefully those 90 planes he lost in our CV exchange will tell.

Only a few things of note - Toraq has been stepping up the no. of aircraft on ASW around Shortland lately, getting a fair number of attacks. They don't much hit anything, but I've got three subs limbing back on bingo fuel. Somebody really should tell the sub captains not to dumb the diesel when attacked.

Sadly, I missed up on an opportunity to wack a few destroyers, as a FT TF down from Kavieng (I presume) triggered my LBA's at PM. They were actually meant to strike Buna, and I only put the primary mission to naval strike from habit. This is the first such attack out of PM, so the altitude was 10,000 feet. 126 bombers attacked, didn't come near hitting anything. Anyways, I guess it's time to get serious about Buna, so I'll drop the altitude to 6,000 feet. It's the AAA guns I'm after, to pave the way for the P-39's.

Toraq ran a spate of air attacks this turn, however the tally was 17 Zero's & 6 Betty's lost to 6 P-40's & 6 F4F's + 1 SBD & 1 Beaufort on the ground. I can live with that. The Zero's out of Buna are still there, so I'm hitting the airfield next turn.

At the moment, it looks like Toraq's engineering capability at Lunga is pretty weak - damage to the runway was only reduced 10 points.

Lastly, he's up to his AV tricks again, this time sneaking one into place off Townsville, cheeky bugger. So the manhunt's on again. Hopefully he won't run too far, as I've LR-CAP'd my shipping in area, which I'm delibrately exposing. I've got some Beaufighters, Hudsons & B-26's on naval attack, and am sending the Enterprise just in case.

Todays fighter battles: Toraq: 20, Timtom: 13. The air battle over Buna saw the debut of the P-38 against the Zero, and I lost two to none. I can only hope that Toraq's losing some if his elite pilots in the process. However, I receive 140 replacement fighters a month + 45 P-39's; Toraq, if memory serves, 95 Zero's + 25? Oscar's, so I guess a 1.0:1.5 loss rate is OK.

I've lost track of Toraq's BB's, which have been holed up at Shortland for a few turns. One is at Rabaul, no sightings of the other six. Me no like...

CINCPAC has alloted me additional reinforcement! 1 MSW, 3 SC's, 4 AP's! Toraq is doomed!

Toraq mounted a major effort against PM this turn, and one suspects this is only the beginning. I had no CAP up, expecting another sweep and needed the fighters for strikes of my own, so he had a clear run. As the strike escort counted 127 fighters, I'm not sure that was a bad thing, and the strike didn't do much damage. My strike against Lae didn't encounter any CAP either, but failed to destroy any of the 50-odd (now: 90) fighters based there. I'm moving two sqd's of B-24's to PM to project some sort of threat onto Rabaul.

I think Toraq hit the wrong button, 'cos he sent his bombers to PM without escort. OK, he's got reason to be confident, but not this confident! I was expecting either another 100 fighters or no strike at all, certainly not this - so it was thanks, but no thanks, no CAP for me please. DAMN! He blew up a fair amount of supplies, but damage to facilities are quickly fixed by my engineers. I've actually got three AAA Bn's at PM, but they don't seem to be able to hit anything.

As a consolation prize, my bombers managed to score at Lae, destroying 15 aircraft on the ground. And AP Keisha Maru is reported to have sunk - every little VP helps.

I've evacuted the last of the 2nd Marine Raiders - off of Rennell Island of all places, as DD Henley carrying them was crippled by Toraq's micro KB on the run to Taivu. The Henley, for it's part, only just limped into Luganville, sys 97, flt 68!

Lots of FT activity in the Solomon Sea - which have trickered a number of strikes by mu Beauforts out of GG, but the weather being pretty bad, they've had trouble locating the targets. Not much more I can do about it, though.

Toraq's curiously passive around Lunga, however, restricted to sweeping a few of his own offensive minefields. No trace of his BB's either - could it be that he's volunteered the initiative? With a 1,000 VP lead, there's of course no need to risk his capital ships, which is a prerequisite for an operation against Luganville.

My bombers scored over Lae again. Toraq has a couple of sqd's stuck there now, and I fully intend to take the opportunity to wreck them. I have another 75 B-26's and some 200 P-39 and Wirraways in reserve, the latter two slated for supporting Operation Eichelberger, which will kick off for real in a few turns. The Operation Backhand forces are about in place to commence the march on Salamaua, which of course they should've been three weeks ago.

A good day for the Allied cause in the South Pacific this turn. Maybe Toraq's better half is telling him off for spending too much time on UV, 'cos he's been screwing up a bit lately - and that's usually my department, mind. He seems curiously resigned to being pounded into the ground at Lae and Lunga, and I can't for the life of me understand why he doesn't use all those BB's of his to sterilize Irau. Then again, he's got 45 turns yet to do it in.

Intelligence indicated that there are no bombers around, so with no reason to CAP my bases, those killer fighter sweeps of his hit thin air.

Toraq doesn't seem to be aware of my build-up at Wau, or at least he's never run any recon missions there. Might I actually achieve surprise? Battle of Buna begins next turn, although my troops are tired from marching up the Kokoda trail, so we'll just do bombardment for a while. The 2/6 Armoured Rgt's been assigned to Operation Eichelberger and is currently 54 miles short of Buna.

A messy turn with dribblets of strikes all over the place. Total chaos. I lost a total of 46 aircraft - 33 air-to-air, 9 by flak, 2 on the ground and 2 op's. 10 Wildcats lost. Toraq lost 18, 8 air-to-air and 10 op's. Among the sqd's flying was EII-1 Daitai - CV Zuikaku's fighter sqd. As I doubt he's been able to sneak up a CV TF on me, this suggests that he's taken the sqd off the carrier. I should be safe from carrier attack in the immediate future, and I doubt he would out his BB's without carrier support, at least not against Irau.

The S-47 got attacked three times from the air and is now without fuel. I wonder what the historical justification is for this rule...

It looks like Toraq is FT'ing the 45th Rgt, 6th ID to somewhere in the Huon Gulf.

An AV is sighted east of Rossel Island, so he's back for a game of cat-and-mouse.

The air battles continue. I lost 28, incl. 10 F4F's & 6 P-40 to Toraq's 26, incl. 13 Zero's & 9 Betty's. He has also taken the DIII-1 (Hiyo) and the CII-1 (Zuiho) off the carriers. This could work to my advantage in the long term, should we ever have another CV engagement.

I probed Buna with a bombardment - no casualties either way - and the bad news is that I'm up against four Rgt's. He's even pulled out the 8th NG from Rabaul, which means that Rabaul is undefended, something confirmed by recon. This puppy takes no prisoners. My troops are well beat after trekking over the Stanleys, and I've got at best combat power equality at the moment. I'm moving another two Bgd's up, but it'll be a while before they arrive.

A FT TF was also sighted at Salamaua. Resupply? He still hasn't run a recon mission against Wau.

PG Nikkai Maru sank...

Post by timtom »

The air battles continue unabated. I lost 39 to 24; fighters - me 22, Toraq 13, incl. another 10 F4F's. That makes it 30 Wildcats lost in three days, put at least I'm drawing blood too. Although I've got currently 63 servicable fighters at Irau, I'm moving up VF-6 to give the marines a breather. VF-6 had been amalgamated with VF-8, so it's got 13 aircraft in reserve and over 50 very good pilots.

I caught a minesweeper snooping around Irau, so I guess recess is over. Irau is protected by over 1,000 mines and 23 6" rifles.

I'm currently trying to sneak a surface TF to Lunga, as Toraq doesn't appear to be providing any coverage for the dripplets of shipping there. Another, smaller TF is headed to a point south of GG. With Toraq busy bombing Irau, the air treat is limited, and I hope for an opportunity to raid Buna. The point is less to destroy shipping than to force Toraq to devote ships/planes defensively.

I've reembarked the 41st ID for Port Moresby. This is a calculated risk, but since the fall (collapse, rather) of Lunga, Toraq has shown little offensive interest in SOPAC, so I'm making the call that he's got nothing planned. As things heat up on New Guinea, he will probably have to devote further LCU's there. The 43rd ID has arrived, so the immediate SOPAC crisis is over. If the 41st ID is to make any impact at Buna, I have to move it now, as it'll take about a month to make it there.

I lost a record 16 F4F's this turn, and a total of 23 fighters. Toraq lost 4. Total tally for the day was 28-7. I now lost almost a month's worth of F4F replacements in four days! I've lost a total of 151 and received 111 replacements. I currently have 88 F4F's on the map, and my five marine sqd's have 42 between them. Toraq's lost 125 A6M2's & 72 A6M3's, so he's just about breaking even. Good thing I'm not solely reliant on the F4F...

Otherwise little to report. The Betty's are still at Shortland. If they're still there next turn, they'll be visited by the B-17's.

Can't complain about this turns tally: 34 to 33. VF-6 debuted at Irau and played a big part in bagging 9 Zero's + 23 Betty's and Nell's (29.1% of attacking bombers). VF-6, however, lost 11 F4F's and 9 pilots. There was not a single pilot in the sqd. with less than XP 75 and most were in the mid-80's. I lost 8 SBD's on the ground and 8 B-25's to AAA at Rabaul in a strike against cripple BB Hiei.

Toraq has pulled his bombers back to Rabaul, which puts them within normal range of my B-17's out of Port Moresby. Hopefully we'll have a nice little after-party...

Virtually all bases were clouded in this turn, so very little activity. Toraq's massing DD's & CL's at Rabaul, about 20 in all. He's also moved some of his bombers out of Rabaul, I don't know where, except not to Shortland.

Another uneventful turn. The usual air attack on Buna didn't come off for some reason, but the heavies flew against Rabaul - without hitting much. There's still 30-odd Betty's there, so we'll hit her again.

And - CINCPAC alloted my the Saratoga, along with 8 DD, Fletchers mostly, 2 CL's & 2 CLAA's, to arrive in 19 days. Thank you kindly, Sir!

Toraq's BB's have reappeared at Shortland. He maintains a strong CAP there, although there are few ships in port and no bombers, so somebody's in for it.

We might have a big naval battle next turn. I've been lying in ambush for Toraq's APD's for a bit, and they are now sighted halfway down the Slot. I'm sending a CA/CL/DD TF to Lunga in the hope of intercepting, throwing in a bombardment for good measure. There is of course the chance that Toraq's BB's will be coming down the Slot as distant cover, so my BB's will be in position between Irau and Lunga. There'll undoubtedly be mines, subs, and CD units to content with too.

Toraq lost 13 Zero's this turn, eight of which was claimed by P-38's over Lunga. Not sure why they were so successful, luck, rookie IJN pilots, maybe because the P-38's were flying high cover over the SBD's they were escorting.

The Oz 6th ID should arrive at Salamaua next turn or turn after that.

Well, in spite of achieving surprise, I had four cruiser torpedoed in our little Lunga tête-à-tête. In return, my ships managed to sink a DD and two PC's, although in fairness my SBD's later finished off 5 cripples - 1 DD & 4 PC's. Another DD should be well banged up.

The cruisers should make it back OK, but need the dock. I'm actually lucky that the damage is no worse. This is almost as bad our last naval engagement. The APD's I was after didn't show, so maybe they were just sub hunting.

KB is back, at Shortland: CVx3, CVLx1, CVEx1, probably about 100 fighters and 100 strike planes. Toraq could/will cause a lot of disruption and damage if he swung into the Coral Sea, as I've nothing to stop him with really as long as he keeps on the move. His mere presence would force me to pull all my SOPOC air back to Noumea for one. OZ is wide open, and although there aren't much shipping there that I can't move to relative safety at Port Moresby, it would seriously retard operations in the area. It's a fortnight till the Sara arrives, and until then a carrier engagement would cost me the Enterprise for sure without any quarantee of a return on the investment.

KB still sitting at Shortland. There's bunch of AP's there too, and recon indicates 6 infantry units, which is a tad much just for defence. The AP's could just be a resupply TF, of course, but I have to operate on the presumption that it's not.

The most conservative invasion target would be Tulagi, but that's hardly worth the effort. It's of no strategic significance other than a 150 VP's worth. he'd have to level Irau first anyway, so why strike there? Removing me from Irau would give him complete control of the lower Solomons and its approaches, allowing him to move troops out of Lunga without the fear of air- or surface intervention. Wunpuko, Koumac & Efate has no defenses to speak of, Luganville is defended by one RCT. Only Noumea is reasonable strong - 4 RCT's, 2 TK Bn.'s.

Should he really want to, Toraq can impose air and surface superiority anywhere on the map except perhaps at Port Moresby. This window starts to close in two weeks when the Saratoga arrives. Then we'll have about the same no. of carrier-based aircraft, but probably I'll have an edge in the quality of the strike planes pilots (Toraq lost 2/3 or so of his Kates last) and of course the deadly USN AAA. In the meanwhile, I can only hope that he's unaware about the status of the Saratoga.

I ran a bloodless probe over at Salamaua. The defenses are very weak, it seems, certainly not enough to contain two Oz bgd's. The problems lies ahead. My only uncommited SWPAC unit is the Oz 7th Cav. Rgt, so I'm certainly not strong enough to face off a determined counter-attack and the whole thing could turn into a dead-trap. I'll probably hold back one of the US 41st ID's RCT's.

KB's on the move, having shifted 180 miles SSE of Shortland. Also out is a TF holding 3 BB's. I've 2 transport TF along the coast of Oz, another headed for PM. I fear this will get real messy. Toraq has several options, incl. providing aircover for a bombardment run on PM (500 aircraft there). He is also massing his bombers at Shortland, so I've pulled my SBD's off Irau. I'd much rather have him come for Noumea, where I have the naval shipping and aircraft to take him on. 500lbs bombs are not battleship killers.
