Digital Download before Store Release

Gary Grigsby's World At War gives you the chance to really run a world war. History is yours to write and things may turn out differently. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances. Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of. Now anything is possible in this new strategic offering from Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games.

We could have just not said the game has gone gold until the day before it was to be released in stores.

One can never predict the fickleness with which information can be received by some.

Why do companies like Microsoft and EA and publisheers of widely anticipated books like Harry Potter go to enormous lengths to coordinate a common realese date for new products?

Because they're EEEEEVIL.

JK!

I don't know why people are getting so uptight about this. I'd love to see the game available for DD today but I can wait a couple weeks. Heck, I've been waiting since last summer, what's a couple more weeks?

If I were in Matrix's shoes, I'd do exactly the same thing. Imagine it from the retailers POV. You agree to stock someone's game only to have it available for DD 2 weeks before it hits your shelves. Think that might affect sales a wee bit?

Companies like GameStop, EBGames and BestBuy fight tooth and nail to get new releases 1 day before each other.

If I do wish to use DD when the game is released, does the digital file come with a PDF of the manual?

I just can't understand why you didn't tell your customers that the game wouldn't be a DD.

I know! I know!

Because the game WILL be a direct download. That's about the best reason I can think of for not telling people that it WON'T be a direct download.

LOL, my apologies for starting this mess.

He meant why didnt they tell us BEFORE the day the game went gold that it wouldnt be available early through direct download. Not that it wouldnt be a DD at all.

I would venture a guess that the reason they didnt tell us was...... beacause we didnt ask before then.[:D][:D]

The game will be available as a "best of both worlds" package wont it? So I can download it as soon as its available, AND get it in the mail a week or so later?

ROFL...and i thought i was blind[8|] There WILL be a download, but it WON'T be an early release. Nowhere did it say ( i thought i wouldn't have to spell this out) that there won't be a download unless i am indeed blind [&o]

I just can't understand why you didn't tell your customers that the game wouldn't be a DD. I'm sure you all knew before it went gold and I'm sure you knew that most people thought there would be a DD before release to stores.

So why didn't you tell us till now?

Where is this coming from? Is there a post I'm not seeing somewhere?

There will be a digital download, simultaneous with the store release.

To clarify:

There will be a retail boxed version, which will also be available through our online store as the separate "physical shipment".

There will be a digital download only option in the store, which will be the full game with PDF manual as usual with all of our download versions.

There will not be a mixed download+physical version as all of our physical production is going into the retail boxed version.

We recommend the retail boxed version to everyone, but offer the digital download as an option for those who can't get a retail boxed copy. We will also be happy to ship a retail boxed copy from our online store as soon as we have them in stock, but at present we can't offer a mixed option.

Another reason I can see waiting on the official store release is piracy. Put it up DD now and I would bet a nickel to a dollar someone somewhere would have it on a warez site within a day or two.

So, it's good for Matrix to wait on the official retail released date, maybe even better to wait "one extra day" hehe, get those retail sales coming in. ;)
WE/I WANT 1:1 or something even 1:2 death animations in the KOIOS PANZER COMMAND SERIES don't forget Erik! ;) and Floating Paratroopers We grew up with Minor, Marginal and Decisive victories why rock the boat with Marginal, Decisive and Legendary?

Ya know what....GGWAW looks like it may have that broader appeal that may get a few more warm bodies into these forums and on to the Matrix site. This could lead to sales of other more hard core products like WITP. Which in the long run will benefit all wargamers by giving Matrix a few $$ to continue to develop some of the best products available to the niche player.

So...to those that are upset about the marketing of this product....go get stuffed [;)]

Hey Matrix,
Don't let all the flack get to ya.
It just goes to show that you have a well anticipated game on your hands and people want to get there grubby fingers on this prized possesion
Heck I've been a Gary Grisby fan since my old Amiga days.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GUYS
I'm sure it will be a hit no matter what

One question:

Will the retail version require the CD to be in the drive during play? If so, I'll opt for the DD.

I'm pretty sure that the registration system that Matrix uses does not require the CD to be in the computer during play.
