Hi, Did you foregt that Grant won. Grant captured enemy armies. And Grant was never drunk during a battle. (And he was not at home when the enemy launched the most important battle of the war)

Not saying that loosing is better than winning. There is just something about Grant I don't like. Not saying he was a bad general, far from it.

Hi, Sherman was one of Grants Generals. He followed Grants orders. Meade was one of Grants Generals he followed Grants orders. Grant did not command the AOP he commanded all Union Armies. Sherman marching through Georgia was Grant.
Meade versus Lee in Virginia in 64-65 was Grant. Everyone focus on Virginia and forgets Grant had the AOP pinning the ANV so it could not detach forces to march against Sherman while Sherman had the mobile mission to rip the guts out of the South. It was not Grant in VA and Sherman in Ga the whole war was Grants and his solution was what ended the war finally in Union victory. To say Grant was a butcher in Virginia and Sherman was better because he lost fewer men is to ignore the fact that it was all one operation.

General Custer

You're reckless... a little like Custer. Make sure you know what you're up against before you charge into battle. But, that being said, Custer was one of the more successful generals of his day. He was a graduate of West Point and one of the more senior officers in the Union army. Custer had a distinguished career until his untimely demise at Little Bighorn.

I don't know if I agree with this...

Actually Custer was only a BREVET Major General (though my living near Monroe, MI that may be sacrilege since he was raised there) and when he died at the Little Big Horn was only a Lieutenant Colonel.

Before Lee met Grant, Lee was a master of moving troops from Virginia to the west. When Grant started his CAMPAIGN against Lee he prevented Lee from being able to reinforce other Confederate forces.

After the Battle of the Wilderness the Union army was demoralized because they knew they had been once again beat by Lee (which they had) but when they were marching back along roads they retreated on many times before someone realized that at an intersection they had turned SOUTH and not NORTH and morale skyrocketed - they finally had a general who wasn't afraid of Lee. Unlike other Union Generals Grant thought in terms of a campaign instead of winning in just one battle. He lost at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania and other places in Virginia but the end result of his campaign was Lee's surrender at Appomatox Courthouse.

Grant simply fought what has become the American style of warfare - attrition. He knew he could make good on his casualties whereas Lee couldn't. Brutal, but then again so is war which is why war is something which should be avoided at all costs.
