You have to be able to read between the lines-her lines. My wife of nearly 20 years has never openly objected to my time spent gaming, but once in a while I get the distinct impression that I need to spread my attention to other matters. So I give her what she wants for a while and then I’m home free again. A little trade off here and a little trade off there and everybody is happy. I still get my dinner brought to my desk without having to ask.

Note that the title is not 'Humping vs Wargaming'. Most guys still retain caveman era instincts and would answer without any thought ('as usual' interrupts the GF) that humping wins over wargaming, but this topic involves the whole deal including peripherals like 'quality time' (ie: time spent together but not humping), expensive outings, social events and other activities far less entertaining than sinking ships which most guys suffer through in order to get to the icky stuff.

So its pretty simple. What do you think? Is it worth the time and expense of having a GF who interrupts your fun game with seething sarcastic remarks (I was gonna post some examples but the admins would likely frown on the material) making concentration difficult and painful? Or would you rather become a cynical, antisocial freak who does the bare minimum of real world actions to stay alive long enough to keep playing the game every spare minute of consciousness? People on the fence inbetween who successfully juggle the two issues at the same time are surely too few in number to be considered as a category, perhaps less than 3%.

Is it worth the agony? [:)]

Weekdays from 7.30 PM (kids in bed) till 10.00 PM (her TV show ends).

Then it is BED time.

Sometimes I can snatch a little time from the university.

Compromises, compromises.

Biggest difference between a Wife and a Wargame is MAINTAINENCE. A wife can provide a lot of comforts and services that a wargame cannot..., but she will call for a great deal more time, effort, and maintainence on your part. A wargame is "satisfaction on demand". It's there when you want it, it doesn't feel ignored or abused if you ignore it for a week, and you can "turn it on" by simply pushing a button.

But your PBEM opponent might feel ignored!

I'm lucky, my wife goes to bed early so I can count on an hour two of gaming time each night.

Well my wife unit Mk 1 is more than happy for me to play war games, and I also know of another guy on these forums whom went to Guadalcanal to look at the old battlefield with his wife-unit Mk 1[X(]

Major difference is that a G.F./Wife is available when SHE want to be..., while a War Game is available when YOU want it to be.  Otherwise, it's a matter of choices.  The G.F./Wife can be a LOT MORE fun than a War Game!   She can also be a LOT MORE trouble and aggrivation.

G'Day Raver, Yes I have a one in a million Wife-Unit MkI. I get the "honey you have a turn" comment with her knowing full well that I will be of no help the next 1-2 hours. But better yet we go on field trips! She took me to Europe four years ago which included five days in Normandy and a two day drive up the Market-Garden corridoor. Two years ago off to Australia dragging her to the RAAF Museum just South of Melbourne and a whole day at the War Memorial in Canberra. Tell me, how many wifeunits and GFunits will spend eigth hours in a museum of military history?

Of course the payoff is me being dragged through the Blue Mountains(just West of Sydney)and other places where wars were not fought. Check out photo below where after seeing a small rock fall of the mountain wall, she ran under the ledge to hold up the mountain preventing a major disaster. If not for Kim, the Blue Mountains may of collapsed causing Sydney to fall off into the Pacific. She should be a national hero down there!!![&o][&o][&o]

Then the big payoff was four days on a very hot Guadalcanal. Kim does not like to be hot! While I spent my time hiking the battlefields of the Canal(check tm.asp?m=902875&mpage=1&key=&#902875) she sat by the pool drinking the local beer.

I'm lucky.  I met the cute lil redhead (aka wife #2) when I went back to college to finish my degree.  She doesn't mind my incessant (and I mean 2 hours or more a day) wargaming, because I'm her techie geek and I fix things....like vcrs and pcs.  I am smart about it and rush home at nite, knock out a turn or two of WITP "before" she arrives and always make sure I'm working away at the assigned chores of the evening...which of course allows me to continue to torpedo her ....later in the evening [8D].

My wife is ok with me spending time on WitP, but there did come a point a while ago when she started referring to it as "The Game" (after the movie).
So as long as she gets here time with me, motorcycle rides through the canyons (she has her own Indian) - relaxing with a drink on the patio listening to music, etc...everything's fine with my wargamming time.

ADavidB is right on.

I was recently talking to a good friend of mine about activating the upgrade feature on my GF. He had an interesting perspective. He asked me "are you more powerful together?" In other words do we do better in our lives because we are together, or not.

Finally, regarding the sinking the torpedo bit, get in there and do your husbandly duties. Wargaming never comes before "joint operations." [:D]

My fiance (now my wife) bought me a new computer, installed WITP and all the patches for me for when I returned home from Iraq. Heck, I even squeezed out a few turns over our honeymoon. She never gripes at me about playing. I think she just does everything to keep me away from her, so she can get some stuff done.[:D]

My wife of 23 years supports my hobby as a nice form of relaxation.  However, if I get excited about something that happens in a PBEM game, she simply rolls her eyes and reminds me that, "They're just ones and zeroes, dear."
